  • Presented in this paper was to evaluate and improve the usability of a web-based logistics information system. The system was developed for the domestic company to track and monitor its own transportation vehicles and for the customers to check the current location of their packages by using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Short Massage Service (SMS). Since the initial system was developed under a tight schedule set by the company, the system designers and programmers did not focus on the usability of the system but on the functionality. Consequently, some usability problems of the system were discovered during the heuristic usability evaluation. This study was required to solve these usability issues. Usability problems of the initial system were identified and analyzed, and the user's requirements for the system were re-evaluated to meet the company's expectation. Several alternative designs were developed by fitted guidelines and then a updated system was developed. The updated system had an empirical usability test to find how much the initial system was improved from the heuristic evaluation. Two kinds of data were gathered during the tests: objective (completion time and number of errors) and subjects' preference. Data showed the updated system is better than the initial system in terms of usability. Presented in this paper includes introduction of the Usability evaluation, usability engineering process applied in this research, alternative design of GUI, usability test and results.

  • The OECD surveys the questionnaire on the background of ICT every three years since 2003. In this study, we compare and analyze the changes in ICT accessibility and ICT usability of Korean students in 2015 and 2018 using the ICT background data of OECD PISA. ICT accessibility refers to the degree of access to ICT equipment at school or at home. There are 10 items of accessibility surveys at schools used by PISA, and 11 items at home. ICT usability refers to how much ICT equipment is used at or outside of school for learning or non-learning purposes. There are ten items for surveying usability at school, and twenty-four items for surveying usability outside of school. In the analysis of this study, the arithmetic mean of the items is used. As a result, Korean students' accessibility at school improved from 25.48% in 2015 to 40.40% in 2018, and from the lowest group in 2015 to below-average group in 2018. In terms of students' usability at school, we analyzed the percentage of students who use the ICT equipment 'almost every day' and the students who use it 'everyday'. Both 2015 and 2018 are among the lowest. Accessibility at home is higher in 2018 than in 2015, and belongs to the average group of OECD countries in 2018. ICT Usability for learning purposes outside of school is the lowest group in both 2015 and 2018. ICT Usability outside of school for non-learning purposes is in the average group of OECD countries. As a result of this study, we can see that Korea's digital literacy education is weak compared to other OECD countries. Prior to education about the Fourth Industrial Revolution, investment in digital literacy education is needed.

  • There is currently a focus on usability of interactive computer software. Previous research in software ergonomics has indicated the importance of evaluating the usability of software user interfaces. Software developers, interface designers or human foctors engineers often confront the task of comparative evaluation among systems, versions or interface designs. This study presents a structured model for comparative evaluation of user interface designs using usability criteria and measures. The proposed model consists of twomain phases : the prescreening phase ad the evaluation phase. The first phase involves expert judgment-based approach with qualitative criteria. The prescreening phase uses absolute measurement analytic hierarchy process to filter possible altermative interfaces to a reasonable subset. The second phase involves user-based approach such as usability testing, with quantitative criteria. The objective of the evaluation phase is to evaluate a subset of altermatives using objective measures. A set of criteria and measures for evaluating the usability of computer software designs is presented. The proposed model provides practitioners with a structured approach to select the best interface based on usability criteria and measures.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of aesthetics of smartphones on subjective and objective usability by the task factors. Although several studies have focused on the effects of aesthetics on subjective and objective usability, correlation between aesthetics and objective usability is ambiguous. Using smartphones which have same functions but different aesthetics, thirty-six subjects were asked to complete one of 3 types of tasks (inputting information, searching information, enjoying information). Both performance data and subjective measures were recorded. The results showed that high aesthetics had a more positive effect on subjective usability than low aesthetics before and after use, with smaller difference after use. High aesthetics seemed to yield longer task completion times. But objective usability was not significantly affected by both task factors and aesthetics. The results indicated that aesthetics may have multiple effects that go beyond affective satisfaction. The findings of this study could be applied to predict effects of aesthetics on subjective and objective usability in usability testing.
