  • While performing the overseas projects in developing countries under EDCF loans with Korean civil design engineers as a project manager, I often used to find out and realize that lots of Korean engineers are not fully aware of what EDCF means and how EDCF funded projects are being implemented in developing countries. This implies that in the past, they have been concentrating on domestic projects only, not to mention have the rare opportunities to work in overseas projects. For these reasons, no wonder they neither pay a careful attention to the unfamiliar terms nor intend to try to realize them, even though such terms are fundamentals and important in overseas design works. With 'something will make it do'-like-attitude in our mind on site, nothing helps us at all. To help those who would like to understand and participate in overseas civil design works in developing countries under EDCF loans either as participants or as a future project manager, I introduce what EDCF means and how the procedure under these loans is being carried out, and they are briefly described herein this paper.

  • This paper presents the global-local finite cover method (GL-FCM) that is capable of analyzing structures involving local heterogeneities and propagating cracks. The suggested method is composed of two techniques. One of them is the FCM, which is one of the PU-based generalized finite element methods, for the analysis of local cohesive crack growth. The mechanical behavior evaluated in local heterogeneous structures by the FCM is transferred to the overall (global) structure by the so-called mortar method. The other is a method of mesh superposition for hierarchical modeling, which enables us to evaluate the average stiffness by the analysis of local heterogeneous structures not subjected to crack propagation. Several numerical experiments are conducted to validate the accuracy of the proposed method. The capability and applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated in an illustrative numerical example, in which we predict the mechanical deterioration of a reinforced concrete (RC) structure, whose local regions are subjected to propagating cracks induced by reinforcement corrosion.

  • In this study, Hamiltonian Approach (HA) is applied to analysis the nonlinear free vibration of beams. Two well-known examples are illustrated to show the efficiency of this method. One of them deals with the Nonlinear vibration of an electrostatically actuated microbeam and the other is the nonlinear vibrations of tapered beams. This new approach prepares us to achieve the beam's natural frequencies and mode shapes easily and a rapidly convergent sequence is obtained during the solution. The effects of the small parameters on the frequency of the beams are discussed. Some comparisons are conducted between the results obtained by the Hamiltonian Approach (HA) and numerical solutions using to illustrate the effectiveness and convenience of the proposed methods.

  • This paper is concerned with the International Standard ISO 2859-1 (1989), Sampling Plans Indexed by Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) for Lot-by-Lot Inspection, his standard is AQL type sampling scheme, and incorporates switching rules to move among normal, tightened, and reduced inspections. Sample size code letters and inspection levels of ISO 2859-1 are the same as those of other attributes standards MIL-STD-105D, ANSI Z1.4, and KS A 3109. But ISO 2859-1 has more simple switching rules than KS A 3109 has. The sampling procedures of the ISO 2859-1 are matched to the variables international standard ISO 3951 to enable us to move between them. Composite OC and ASN curves are given for AQL 2.5% and code letter F.

  • Recently, innovative medical services are fast emerging, which include customized medical services based on bio-informatics, composition of cure and well-being exploiting ubiquitous technology, hospital supply chain management using RFID, and so forth. However, conventional approaches for new service development hardly give us systematic model to analyze and produce creative medical services. Because most of them are static and concentrate on microscopic tools or techniques. Thus, it is highly desirable to suggest an integrative framework to organize the whole transformation process from technology to medical service. The objective of this study is to propose a medical service engineering model based on the dynamic innovation theory. The proposed model contains objectives of service system, strategies of hospital, stages, activities required to deal with medical service life cycle, which incorporates the acquisition of new technology, transformation to the product, penetration into market, and adoption of consumers. In addition, the usefulness and applicability of the newly proposed model are provided using catholic medical center example.

  • IEC 60300 series, the international standards on dependability management system are newly developed and introduced rapidly worldwide. In order to meet this situation, it is necessary to apply them to the Korean industries effectively. This requires for us to prepare in advance for the introduction of the certification system of IEC 60300. It includes the establishment of the infrastructure such as documentation of Korean Standards, introduction of test equipments and test manuals, recognition of the certification body and training of specialists etc. This paper addresses the first step for the Introduction of IEC 60300. It includes the necessity of introduction of the system, general requirements and procedures for the certification of the industries, sampling methods design and establishment of the dependability assurance system of the materials.

  • Post industrial technologies have improved human standard of living, however, a host of negative environmental consequences from the unlimited industrial appetite have posed serious global challenges. Remanufacturing is an industrial manufacturing process that is to restore old products to perform like a new and to save energy, natural resources, landfill space and to reduce air pollution by less re-smelting. By extending product lift cycle, remanufacturing gives us enormous opportunities for sustainable development of our society. This paper introduces needs and current state of the art in the field of remanufacturing, also analyzes old products in terms of product variety and wear conditions with an example of automobile alternators. Then, a general and a product-specified remanufacturing process will be determined with them. Finally, this paper shows systemized guidelines for remanufacturing process of the specified parts. The results could be also used as a basic information for further remanufacturing applications.

  • We are currently in the process of reform toward the digital era as information technology constantly advances, and to cope with the change, each industry provides products including furniture that rapidly evolves accordingly. What this leaves us is new, various products on the market, which highlighted ability to rapidly adjust to the change as major competence. In the midst of this, the development field is focusing on producing goods with affordance, more distinct and intuitive design. Cases analyzed in this study show how affordance is applied not only to product designs but our daily lives, and thus, the importance and characteristics of affordance in the modern society. Based on findings, I regarded designs that lead to intuitive understanding of functions and even unconscious use of them the cases with properly applied affordance and presented chair designs.

  • Microarray technology enables us to measure the expression of tens of thousands of genes simultaneously under various experimental conditions. Clustering analysis is one of the most successful methods for analyzing microarray data using the assumption that co-expressed genes may be co-regulated. It is important to extract meaningful clusters from a long unordered list of clusters and to evaluate the functional homogeneity and heterogeneity of clusters. Many quality measures for clustering results have been suggested in different conditions. In the present study, we consider biological pathways as a collection of biological knowledge and used them as a reference for measuring the quality of clustering results and functional homogeneities. PathTalk visualizes and evaluates functional relationships between gene clusters and biological pathways.

  • RFID/USN means a way of attaching RFID to all required objects to identify them and exchanging the required information through the network. High frequency (13.56MHz) has been commonly used in the field of processing management in Korea, and extremely short wave (433.92MHz) has been used for harbor logistics management by being attached to containers in the US. As for SCM field where we need to have a broader understanding, the research on $860{\sim}960MHz$, a sort of extremely short wave has been most actively conducted. Therefore, in-this study, in order to understand the features of all frequencies ranging and to design and implementation of RFID Middle System suitable for realizing u-Logistics by using those diverse frequencies.
