  • Over the years, many researches have been performed to create 3D digital maps. Nevertheless, it is still time-consuming and involves a high cost because a large part of 3D digital mapping is conducted manually. To compensate this limitation, we propose methodologies to represent 3D objects as 3D symbols and locate these symbols into a base map automatically. First of all, we constructed the 3D symbol library to represent 3D objects as 3D symbols. In the 3D symbol library, the attribute and geometry information are stored, which defines factors related to the types of symbols and related to the shapes respectively. These factors were used to match 3D objects and 3D symbols. For automatic mapping of 3D symbols into a base map, we used predefined parameters such as the size, the height, the rotation angle and the center of gravity of 3D objects which are extracted from Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data and 2D digital maps. Finally, the 3D map in urban area was constructed and the mapping results were tested using aerial photos as reference data. Through this research, we can identify that the developed the algorithms can be used as effective techniques for 3D digital cartographic techniques

  • Analysis of high-resolution satellite image becomes important for cartography, surveillance, and remote sensing. However, there are lots of problems to be solved for automatic analysis of high-resolution satellite image especially in urban area. The problems are originated from the increased complexity due to the unnecessary details and shadows, and time-varying illuminations. Because of such obstacles, it seems impossible to make automatic analysis. This paper proposes a way of change detection of buildings in urban area by using digital vector map. The proposed way makes the buildings on the vector map parameterized, and searches them in the preprocessed high-resolution image by using generalized Hough transform. The searched building objects are overlaid on the satellite image. The overlaid image can help to detect the change of building rapidly.

  • The goal of this study is to apply and evaluate the precipitation outflow in river basin using satellite data and GIS for proposing the efficient watershed management method. Not only precipitation outflow data but also various spatial data such as digital map, soil map, geologic map and multi-temporal TM images were used. Using landcover classification result and soil map were applied to estimate the average CN. The CN value of 63.37 by SCS method was produced in AMC-2 condition otherwise the result of direct estimation with observation method was 63 CN value. The relative error of two results was 0.59%. It can be possible to apply the satellite data for precipitation outflow analysis. For more accurate and credible analysis of this, the more multi-temporal satellite and real observation data will be needed.

  • Urban redevelopment make a short term effects without consideration about resident‘s lives. so, there are many problems and planners solve the problems to improve urban redevelopment based on resident leaded direction. The purpose of this research is to find inherent district which is character by residents. Most of them could be explained in relation to life, religious leadership, traditional cultural heritage and democratic movement. Group interviews at a field site were carried as the main methodology by people who have an intimate knowledge of the place facts. This research has implication on a cognitive and emotional community map of residents compared to the just physical and geographical map. The places and place recognition activities and movement can be a basic foundation for residents participation in improving their housing neighborhood environment.

  • In this study, as the passing of a year, the changes of tidal flat area in Seohan Bay, North Korea was monitored through using Landsat ETM Data and the ancient topological map. The map to present tidal flat distribution characteristic based on the ancient topographical map (1918) was constructed as GIS DB. In addition, a tidal flat distribution map was estimated by using the satellite images with unsupervised classification method. Even though it is difficult to approach to study area, it was possible to gain the data and to monitor the change of the coast tidal flat by comparing to area change yielded.

  • The prototype of forest fire management system on Web was studied. In the architecture of this system, one of the most important concerns is to handle load upcoming to Web Server so that it provides Web service without any delay or failure. In order to solve this problem, the agent is designed on dispatcher in a Web server cluster and implemented to distribute load dynamically by considering the information related to load coming to the Web Server such as the number of connection to the Map Server. The proposed forest fire management system has user-friendly interface with the GIS mapping functionality by selecting Map Objects Internet Map Server (MO IMS) as Map Server and is implemented using Java as programming language.

  • A 3D modeling of urban area can be composed the terrain modeling that can express specific and shape of the terrain and the object modeling such as buildings, trees and facilities which are found in urban areas. Especially in a 3D modeling of building, it is very important to make a unit model by simplifying 3D structure and to take a texture mapping, which can help visualize surface information. In this study, the texture mapping technique, based on library for 3D urban modeling, was used for building modeling. This technique applies the texture map in the form of library which is constructed as building types, and then take mapping to the 3D building frame. For effectively apply, this technique, we classified buildings automatically using LiDAR data and made 3D frame using LiDAR and digital map. To express the realistic building texture, we made the texture library using real building photograph.

  • The planning and management of the watershed environment require huge amount of information regarding almost all aspects of natural and manmade features of the area. Until lately this study could be achieved through days of exhaustive surveys map generation and tedious calculations. Remote sensing and GIS provides huge temporal database for an area and GIS provides the powerful tool for spatial and non-spatial analysis of remotely sensed data. The paper highlights the assessment of land potentiality using weighed overlay analysis with drainage density, soil, slope and lineament, LULC map was used to identify the utilization area of the watershed. The arithmetic overlay analysis was performed with potential and utilization layer to assess the availability of land for the future development.

  • It is a basic study to speculate the old form of urban space. The purpose of the study is to study how to build a database that can synthesize multiple data describing the past. In particular, It was focused to the first half time of Seoul City during the Chosun Dynasty. Data is structured systematically and inclusively through digitizing, visualization, and specification. Through this, the city's urban space scene is reconstructed as a map of the city. And maps include various humanities information explaining the aspects of space activities. And it will become a system that will facilitate data management and improve the clarity of information.

  • The uncontrolled urban expansion causes various social, economic problems and natural/environmental problems. Therefore, it is necessary to forecast urban expansion by identifying various factors related to urban expansion. This study aims to forecast it using a decision tree that is widely used in various areas. The study used geographic data such as the area of use, geographical data like elevation and slope, the environmental conservation value assessment map, and population density data for 2006 and 2018. It extracted the new urban expansion areas by comparing the residential, industrial, and commercial zones of the zoning in 2006 and 2018 and derived a decision tree using the 2006 data as independent variables. It is intended to forecast urban expansion in 2030 by applying the data for 2018 to the derived decision tree. The analysis result confirmed that the distance from the green area, the elevation, the grade of the environmental conservation value assessment map, and the distance from the industrial area were important factors in forecasting the urban area expansion. The AUC of 0.95051 showed excellent explanatory power in the ROC analysis performed to verify the accuracy. However, the forecast of the urban area expansion for 2018 using the decision tree was 15,459.98㎢, which was significantly different from the actual urban area of 4,144.93㎢ for 2018. Since many regions use decision tree to forecast urban expansion, they can be useful for identifying which factors affect urban expansion, although they are not suitable for forecasting the expansion of urban region in detail. Identifying such important factors for urban expansion is expected to provide information that can be used in future land, urban, and environmental planning.
