San Francisco의 두 현대 미술관, SFMOMA와 De Young Museum (Two Modern Museums in San Francisco: SFMOMA and De Young Museum)

  • In San Francisco, two new museums were recently built in 1995 and 2005. The one is San Francisco Museum of Modern Art designed by Mario Botta and the other is De Young Museum designed by Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron. The urban settings for the museums are compared with each other and theories of the architects are evolved on different branches in the modernist trends. The theories and settings are followed by the representation in the forms, facades, interior spaces and towers. SFMOMA is located on the SoMa area, which was recently developed into a cultural urban core with Moscone Center and Buena Yerba Garden. De Young Museum was rebuilt in the old museum site in the Golden Gate Park. The one is on the context of urban artefacts and the other on the context of natural artefacts. To Botta, the museum in today's city plays a role analogous to that of the cathedral of yesterday. It is a place of common encounter and confrontation. The volume of SFMOMA which is geometrical and symmetric with double pylons. The frontality on the street and public green open space and the axiality of SFMOMA runs through the Buena Yerba Garden over Buena Yerba Center for the Arts are reminded us of an urban core with a religious monument and a city square. The staircase with grandiose design in the atrium seems to work as an altar with lighting from skylight above enhancing the liturgical ambiance. De Young Museum is shaped in a rectangle with long narrow courtyards. Three bands of volumes are juxtaposed and the nature flows into the museum corridors and galleries. The tower is distorted so as to be aligned to the street grids of the surrounding area. The copper panel of De Young Museum and natural context evoke modern concept of "machine in the garden". The two museums from different pedigrees of Modern Architecture are now major landmarks of SF and urban expressions for the 21st century.

재가지체장애인의 자립을 저해하는 농촌과 도시의 주거실내 환경요소에 대한 비교연구 (Comparative Analysis of Rural and Urban Residential Interior Elements Affecting Physically Disabled's Independence)

  • For those with disabilities, the residential area is the primary place to adapt the disabilities. Since the quality of the area gives a critical impact on their quality of life, it is essential to finding the measures to create the residential environment that supports their independence. In this regard, this study aimed to compare and analyze the interior elements of the houses that hinder the independence of the physically handicapped in the rural and urban areas, and conducted a survey on a total of 80 physically challenged in Seoul and Yeongwol (40 for each area). As a result, the respondents answered that the houses where they are currently living are hindering their independence regardless of area, and there were regional differences in the level of inconvenience with the size of living room, size of utility room, location of room, lighting and heating environment, ventilation system, deteriorated wallpapers and finishing materials, threshold and floor level difference and humidity control. This study has significance by providing the realistic measures to improve the housing environment of the physically challenged living in the rural and urban areas to be customized to them to increase their quality of life.

  • In respond to climate change caused by global environmental problems, countries around the world are actively promoting the advancement of new electricity industries. The new energy business is being applied to energy storage systems (ESS), electric vehicle charging business, and power demand response using cutting edge technologies. In 2022, the Korean government is also establishing a policy stance to foster new energy industries and making efforts to improve its responsiveness to power demand response with the innovative technologies. In Korea, attempts to commercialize energy power are also being made in the private and public sectors to control energy power in houses, buildings, and industries. For example, private companies, local governments, and central government are making all-out efforts to develop new energy industry models through joint investment. There are forms such as establishing energy-independent facilities by region, establishing an electric vehicle charging system, controlling urban lighting systems with Information technologies, and managing demand between power suppliers and power consumers. This study examined the business model applied with energy storage system, electric vehicle charging business, smart lighting, and power demand response based on information communication technology to examine the site where smart energy system was introduced. According to this study, company missions and government tasks are suggested to apply new energy business technologies as economical energy solutions that meet the purpose of use by region, industry, and company.

동선체계와 환경요소의 상관관계가 복합용도건물의 길찾기에 미치는 영향에 관한 코엑스몰 사례연구 (A COEX mall Case study on the Correlation between Circulation system and Environmental elements for a Better Wayfinding design in Mixed-use buildings)

  • Various mixed-use buildings have been developed in the process of resolving the issue of 'urban regeneration' in the modern city. In this urban regeneration process, the size of the mixed-use buildings and the level of their functional complexity have been increased. It requires a quantitative and systematic approach in order to analyze the internal circulation flow within the large-scale commercial mixed-use buildings. Circulation system and environmental factors, respectively, have been vital criteria for the effectiveness of a Wayfinding design within the mixed-use buildings. The circulation system in this paper consists of 1) the number of the incoming paths at each node, and 2) the angle of directional transition from the incoming paths at the node. The environmental factors include 1) color tone, 2) materials, 3) lighting, and 4) pattern of the interior design of the mixed-use buildings. In this paper, the author develops a method of investigating the influence of the correlation between the circulation system and the environmental factors on the design of Wayfinding on the view of the remodeled COEX MALL interior design.

경의선 숲길공원의 범죄예방 환경디자인 개선점 연구 - 창전동 구간을 중심으로 - (A Study on Improvement of Crime Prevention Environment Design in Gyeongui Line Forest Park - In Case of Changjeon-dong section -)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest an improvement for the CPTED(Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) guidelines for the urban linear park. We analysed the Changjeon-dong section of Gyeongui Line Forest Park into 12 sub-areas and evaluated CPTED design applied on the park based on analysis framework derived from 15 precedent studies by conducting on-site observations. Both surveys and in-depth interviews on users of the park were conducted and the results of analysis on the evaluation from users and the on-site observation were compared. We found that the lighting condition and the height of wall and trees at the park boundaries are very important to insure natural surveillance since the adjacent areas are easy to be hidden from passers-by and subject to invasion and threat of crime while protecting the privacy of residents on the boundary. There should be improvement on management facilities and crime prevention facilities for more safe and convenient use of the linear park and the adjacent commercial use during nighttime also need to be managed for conflicts between various type of users.

Sustainable Tall Buildings: Summary of Energy-Efficient Design

  • Tall buildings are frequently decried as unsustainable due to their excessive energy usage. Early skyscrapers used natural light and ventilation to facilitate human comfort and applied organic materials such as stone, glass, wood, concrete, and terra cotta for cladding and finishes. With the advent of fluorescent lighting, modern heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and thermally sealed curtain walls, tall office buildings no longer had to rely on natural light and ventilation to provide comfort. Energy efficiency was not a significant factor when the operational costs of buildings were relatively inexpensive. However, today's skyscrapers must become more energy-efficient and sustainable due to energy crises and climate change. This paper highlights vital energy-efficient design principles and demonstrates with illustrative case studies how they are applied to tall buildings in various parts of the world. It shows how sustainable environmental systems do not act alone but are integrated with advanced curtain wall systems, sky gardens, and atria, among others, to regulate and sustain thermal comfort and conserve energy.

도심 내 야간의 조도와 봄철 수목 개화 및 잎 생장 간 상관관계 - 서울 잠실역에서 올림픽공원 구간을 대상으로 - (Correlation between the Illuminance and the Flowering and Leaf Growth of Trees at Night - In Case of Downtown from Jamsil Station to Olympic Park, Seoul -)

  • 본 연구에서는 서울 도심 내 야간 인공 조명의 조도에 따라 수목 개화율과 잎 생장률이 차이가 있는 지를 규명하기 위한 사례 연구로 수행되었다. 조도는 총 26개소에서 78개 지점에서 측정하였고, 조도와 토지이용현황을 고려하여 3개 그룹으로 구분하였으며, 그룹 A(조사구 1~7)의 조도 범위는 4.90~112.50 lx, 그룹 B(조사구 8~18)의 조도 범위는 0.45~42.40 lx, 그룹 C(조사구 19~26)의 조도 범위는 0.28~22.10 lx이었다. 조도 차이 일원배치 분산분석 결과 그룹 A, B, C로 분류되었다. 수목 개화율은 왕벚나무와 철쭉류 각 30개체, 수목 잎 생장률은 느티나무, 은행나무, 단풍나무 각 30개체를 선정하여 조사하였다. 수종별 일원배치 분산분석 결과 연구대상 수목 중에서 개화율은 철쭉류, 잎 생장률은 단풍나무가 세 개의 그룹으로 분리되어 상대적으로 조도 차이에 따른 수목 영향 지표종으로서 유용한 것으로 판단되었다. 그룹별 평균 조도와 수목의 개화율 및 잎 생장률 간 상관관계 분석결과 유의성이 인정되어 조도가 높을수록 수목의 개화 및 잎 생장이 빨라지는 경향이 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 향후에는 야간 조명의 빛공해 수준별로 수목에 어느 정도 영향을 미치고 있는 지에 대한 보다 구체적인 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.

  • 도시는 어제와 오늘 또 내일이 공존하는 삶의 공간이다. 때문에 도시에는 고궁이나 옛 건축물이 있고, 화려하고 심플한 현대건축물도 있으며 미래지향적인 작품들도 있다. 이렇게 많은 요소와 함께 시간에 흐름을 한 공간에서 느낄 수 있는 곳이 바로 도시라고 할 수 있다. 그 동안 우리는 국가와 국가 간의 경쟁 속에서 살아왔다. 그러나 요즈음은 도시와 도시의 경쟁체계로 바뀌어 가고 있다. 즉, 한국에 경쟁상대는 대만이라든가 프랑스, 독일이라고 했다면 오늘날에는 서울과 동경이 경쟁 혹은 부산과 파리의 경쟁 등 좀 더 세부화 되어 가고 있는 것이다. 강력한 설정을 가지고 경쟁력을 높이고 있으며 부산, 광주, 인천, 대구 등 모든 도시가 각각에 특성을 강조하고 있다. 이런 도시계획에 있어서 경쟁력의 중심에 도시야간경관과 조명에 대한 중요성이 새롭게 인식되어가고 있다. 이제 도시는 주간 시간대와 함께 야간 시간대에 중요성을 강조하고 있으며 도시에 생명력은 조명에 역할이 상당부분 차지하게 된 것같다. 이런 시점에서 그러면 도시의 경관 또는 조명연출계획은 어떻게 구성, 혹은 구상되어야 하는지 알아보고 검토하는 것이 경쟁력 있는 도시를 만드는데 큰 도움이 되지 않을까 생각된다.

야간상업가로의 조명물리량 및 이미지 분석 - 보행자 시점을 기준으로 - (Analysis on Luminous Environment and Subjective Image of Two Different Commercial Streets at Night - Focused on View Point of Pedestrian -)

  • Streetscape plays on important role in urban cities. Characteristics of streets is basically defined by the building facade, signs, plants and paving during the daytime. However at night, street receives a new appearance due to the shop light from the buildings, exterior lightings, signboards and street light, and it creates most of the image of the streets. This study aims to analyze the luminous environment and its subjective image of two different pedestrian's commercial streets. Insa-dong street and Myungdong street were chosen for the study. Horizontal illuminance and luminance on building surface, advertisement billboards and pedestrian road were measured. Thirty students were asked to rate the five scaled questionnaire on their subjective images of the streets. Statistical analysis including profile, correlation and T-test are conducted and some findings are discussed
