This technical paper presents a detailed review of the stack effect phenomenon and of the associated implications pertaining to the design and construction of high-rise buildings in regions of extreme climatic conditions. The present review is focused on both the classical 'chimney' effect as well as on the reverse stack effect, which are respectively related to cold and hot climates. For the purposed of the work here presented, the ASHRAE (2013) design conditions of Astana (Kazakhstan) and Riyadh (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) were selected. A 230 m tall residential building of rectangular floor plan was numerically modelled in the context of the climatic conditions of the two abovementioned cities and a number of sensitivity analyses were performed, covering parametric changes of: temperature, façade air tightness, site wind speeds and wind directions.

Using data observed from 1966 to 1994, long-term trends of visibility at 15:00 in Seoul and Chunchon were analyzed. Annual average visibility in Seoul has been decreased continuously. In particular, annual number of days for visibility more than 15km was remarkably reduced since 1980. Also, the trend of the visibility in Chunchon was similar to that of Seoul. But the variations were small to compare with Seoul. Long-term trends of relative humidity (RH) and specific humidity (q) at 15:00 in Seoul have been slightly decreased. Cumulative frequency distributions of visibility for ranges of RH (0 $\sim 50%, 50 \sim 60%, 60 \sim 70%, 70 \sim 80%, 80 \sim 90%, 90 \sim 100%$) at 15:00 in Seoul and Chunchon were generally decreased during the second period (1984 $\sim$ 1994) as compared with the first period (1973 $\sim$ 1983), except for the range of 90 to 100% RH. Despite of decreasing phenomena of RH, characteristics of urban climates in Seoul, visibility degraded due to an increase of air pollution.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the stack effect reduction alternatives in tall complex buildings in cold climates. The main problems in tall buildings occur in elevators. Such problems as elevator doors that do not close and exhaust airflows result in excessive pressure differences across elevator doors due to stack effect. Under the expected conditions causing these pressure differences, Field measurements are performed in three tall buildings. Each result of the measurements is analyzed in architectural design aspects. With these analysis, building design guidelines are proposed and analyzed by field measurements and computer simulations.

The spatial resolution of local weather and climate information for agronomic practices exceeds the current weather service scale. To supplement the insufficient spatial resolution of official forecasts and observations, gridded climate data are frequently generated. Most ecological models can be run using gridded climate data to produce ecosystem responses at landscape scales. In this lecture, state of the art techniques derived from geospatial climatology, which can generate gridded climate data by spatially interpolating point observations at synoptic weather stations, will be introduced. Removal of the urban effects embedded in the interpolated surfaces of daily minimum temperature, incorporation of local geographic potential for cold air accumulation into the minimum temperature interpolation scheme, and solar irradiance correction for daytime hourly temperature estimation are presented. Some experiences obtained from their application to real landscapes will be described.

This study aims to assess vulnerability in urban thermal environments of Seoul by using indicators frequently used in previous studies as well as effective indicators for spatial planning like urban and environmental planning. For this purpose, fifteen indicators that influence urban thermal environments such as heat waves, urban heat island effects, and urban micro-climates were identified based on literature reviews. Indicators for presenting urban structure and spatial properties were included; for example, building volume as 'exposure to climate', buildings completed before 1980 as 'sensitivity', and green space areas as 'adaptive capacity'. Among them, twelve indicators were applied to assess vulnerability in urban thermal environments of Seoul by using a GIS spatial analysis combined with fuzzy logic. The results show that the Gangnam area is identified as more vulnerable to a heat environment as compared to the Gangbuk area. In the Gangnam area, Seocho-gu, Gangnam-gu, Dongjak-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Gangseo-gu were relatively high in vulnerability, while Dongdaemun-gu, Gangbuk-gu, Gwangjin-gu, Jungrang-gu were relatively high in the Gangbuk area. Gwanak-gu, Dobong-gu, Eunpyeong-gu, and Nowon-gu, which include forested areas, have low vulnerability in the sectors of 'exposure to climate' and 'sensitivity' due to the impact of Gwanaksan and Bukhansan. However, some areas with high vulnerability like Seocho-gu and Gangnam-gu may have lower vulnerability if the indicator 'status of air conditioning' from the sector of 'adaptive capacity' is used. This study could support the establishment of a practicable thermal environment policy and spatial planning to reduce heat-related risks in the field of urban and environmental planning.
The greenhouse gas emission according to the energy consumption is the cause of global warming. With various climates, it is occurs the direct problems to ecosystem. The various studies are being to reduce the carbon dioxide, which accounts for more than 80% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, estimate the carbon usage using potential biomass extracted from forest type map according to land-use by satellite image, and estimate the amount of carbon dioxide, according to the energy consumption of urban area. The $CO_2$ adsorption is extracted by the amount of forest based on the direct absorption of tree, the other used investigated value. The $CO_2$ emission in Jecheon was 3,985,900 $TCO_2$ by energy consumption. At the land cover classification, the forest is analyzed as 624,085ha and the farmland is 148,700ha. The carbon dioxide absorption was estimated at 1,834,850 Tons from analyzed forest. In case of farmland, it was also estimated at 706,658 Tons.

Surface ozone concentrations measured at 40 monitoring sites in three major cities (Seoul, Busan, and Daegu) of Korea during 1993~2000 were analyzed to understand the characteristics of temporal and spatial distributions. Trends were analyzed for annual mean, 95th percentiles of daily 8-hour maximum and days exceeding 8-h ozone standard of 60 ppb. Three indicators exhibited increasing trends (+0.75 ppb yr$^{-1}$ , +2.20 ppb yr$_{-1}$ , and +5.35 days yr$_{-1}$ on average) throughout the study period at all cities. Diurnal and seasonal variations were the largest in Seoul followed by Daegue and Busan, due to the high photochemical production and titration of ozone (Seoul), strong wind and constant supply of background ozone from the ocean (Busan). In the urban centers and industrial areas at all cities, scavenging of ozone by NO reduces the daily 8-hour maximum ozone by 10 ppb on average. High concentrations of ozone have frequently occurred in downwind eastern (Seoul and Daegu) or northern (Busan) sides of the territory. In particular, the coastal area of Busan had relatively high ozone level due to the local sea land breeze circulation. The results indicated that the temporal and spatial variations of ozone concentration were non -uniform and were closely related to the local environments; emission levels, climates, and geographic locations.

To reduce the energy consumption of HVAC system in buildings, thermally activated building system(TABS) has been applied to low energy building because of energy efficient performance and reduction of peak load. DOAS coupled with a parallel sensible cooling could be promising because TABS handles sensible heat load only. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the indoor thermal environment and cooling operation characteristic of TABS with dedicated outdoor air system(DOAS) in Korea climate. Indoor thermal environment and operation characteristic of TABS integrated with DOAS are investigated at different TABS operation schedules and climate conditions by simulation tests. The result shows that the DOAS is more suitable for hot and humid climates. And also it show that the potential of intermittent operation of TABS.
An effective approach to promoting sustainability within the construction industry is the use of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) as a substitute for natural aggregates. Ensuring the frost resilience of RAC technologies is crucial to facilitate their adoption in regions characterized by cold temperatures. The main aim of this study was to use the Random Forests (RF) approach to forecast the frost durability of RAC in cold locations, with a focus on the durability factor (DF) value. Herein, three optimization algorithms named Sine-cosine optimization algorithm (SCA), Black widow optimization algorithm (BWOA), and Equilibrium optimizer (EO) were considered for determing optimal values of RF hyperparameters. The findings show that all developed systems faithfully represented the DF, with an R2 for the train and test data phases of better than 0.9539 and 0.9777, respectively. In two assessment and learning stages, EO - RF is found to be superior than BWOA - RF and SCA - RF. The outperformed model's performance (EO - RF) was superior to that of ANN (from literature) by raising the values of R2 and reducing the RMSE values. Considering the justifications, as well as the comparisons from metrics and Taylor diagram's findings, it could be found out that, although other RF models were equally reliable in predicting the the frost durability of RAC based on the durability factor (DF) value in cold climates, the developed EO - RF strategy excelled them all.

As abnormal climates occur due to the increase in greenhouse gases at home and abroad, various problems such as human casualties, crop damage, energy depletion, and economic loss due to heat diseases, which are one of the extreme climate phenomena, are following one after another. In response, the government has established the 'Climate Crisis Response Special Committee' since 2018, when it recorded the greatest damage in history due to heat waves, and has been carrying out budget formation and reform of laws and systems every year to respond to heat waves. However, in relation to the heat wave damage reduction facility that is being expanded with a large budget, there is no prior research related to the degree of heat loss due to the use of the facility, the difference in effects between specific groups, and the economic effect that comes back compared to the invested budget. Therefore, from a midto long-term perspective, it is expected that it will be difficult to establish a clear direction for policy making. Therefore, in this study, representative facilities were selected according to the principle of heat reduction among the currently expanded heat damage reduction facilities, and a questionnaire survey was conducted for users of each reduction facility (waterfall, awning, pond, and elastic pavement). Accordingly, the change in the sense of heat according to the use of the heat damage reduction facility was checked, and the change in the sense of heat according to the group characteristics (gender, age, metabolic rate) was analyzed to examine the characteristics of the relationship between the facility and the users.
