Beyond Net Zero - SOM's Urban Sequoia Building Concept and Technologies for Future, Regenerative Cities

  • Cities cover only 3% of the planet's surface, yet they are responsible for more than 75% of the global emissions. Given the projected urban built area will double by 2060, the carbon emitted from cities will further increase. SOM proposes the Urban Sequoia concept, for buildings that go beyond 'net zero' and absorb carbon from the atmosphere. This concept combines multiple strategies, including the use of an optimised building form with a highly efficient structural system, modularized prefabrication techniques, holistic integration of facade, MEP and interiors' components, bio-based materials, and Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, to reduce a 40-storey building's whole life cycle carbon emissions by more than 300% over a 100-year lifespan. Calculations of embodied carbon emissions are performed with SOM's in-house Environmental Analysis (EA) Tool to demonstrate the effectiveness of employing Urban Sequoia's design strategies in the design of new buildings using current technologies.

A study on the Developmental Indicators of Urban Forest with Reference to User Recreational Satisfaction -Case study of Mt. Gum-Jung- (이용자의 레크리에이션 이용만족에 기초한 도시림의 개발지표 설정에 관한 연구 -부산시 금정산을 사례로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the prime factors that affect user satisfaction of area and facilities in urban forests, to classify those factors, to find out factorial structure of user satisfaction about them, and then to suggest important indicators in the urban forest planning, design, and development. The survey research was done using the self-administered questionnaire method by the people in the city of the Pusan who participated in recreational activities in the Mt. Keumjung. Factor analysis was used to extract the prime factors related to the recreational satisfaction concerning the area and facilities of the urban forest by the SPSS program, and then prime factors were used to investigate the factorial structure of user recreational satisfaction in the urban forest by the LInear Structure RELation program. According to the factor analysis concerning the 13 variables, 4 prime factors by the statistical values were considered as effective, indicating, 'health and recreational facilities', 'convenience and management facilities','facilities for the physical and psychological training' and 'historical and cultural areas'. The results of the causal structure analysis were identified as having significant effects mutually on endogenous variables, 'overall recreational satisfaction of the areas and facilities in the Mt. Keumjung','health and recreational facilities','convenience and management facilities','facilities for the psychological training', and 'historical and cultural areas'. But exogenous variables which have significant effects on endogenous variables were also indentified. Overall fits of both causal model were very good. The hypothetical causal structural equation models based on the results found partially significant correlation between dndogenous variables and between envogenous and exogenous variables. These significant relationships indiate important factors and variables that should be considered in planning, design, and development of the urban forests. Therefore, development direction of the Mt. Keumjung has to be analyzed as significant factors concerning user recreational satisfaction in a systematic was, recognized as important variables for planning process. The plan for development and management also should reflect the natural conservation policy from the environmental conservation movement like natural conservation advertisement and environmental education.

The Spatial Statistical Relationships between Road-traffic Noise and Urban Components Including Population, Building, Road-traffic and Land-use (공간통계모형을 이용한 도로 소음과 도시 구성 요소의 관계 연구)

  • To understand the relationship between road-traffic noise and urban components such as population, building, road-traffic and land-use, the city of Cheongju that already has road-traffic noise maps of daytime and nighttime was selected for this study. The whole area of the city is divided into square cells of a uniform size and for each cell, the urban components are estimated. A spatial representative noise level for each cell is determined by averaging out population-weighted facade noise levels for noise exposure population within the cell during nighttime. The relationship between the representative noise level and the urban components is statistically modeled at the cell level. Specially, we introduce a spatial auto regressive model and a spatial error model that turns out to explain above 85 % of the noise level. These findings and modeling methods can be used as a preliminary tool for environmental planning and urban design in modern cities in consideration of noise exposure.

Evaluating appropriateness of the design methodology for urban sewer system (도시 하수관거 설계 방법의 적정성 평가)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the appropriateness of methodology for designing urban sewer system using a rational method-based model, Makesw and an urban runoff model, SWMM. The Gunja basin was selected as a study area and precipitation, runoff, vegetation, soil, imperviousness data were used to estimate floods. The appropriateness of methodology was evaluated based on comparison analysis between floods estimated from Makesw and SWMM. The comparison analysis was conducted between floods estimated from Makesw and SWMM, which were simulated using design rainfall and measured rainfall from past inundation events. The comparison results showed that in the case of design rainfall, the rational method-based floods were larger than that based on SWMM in all main lines. However in several branch lines, the rational method-based floods were smaller than thoes based on SWMM. In addition, for the case of measured rainfall from past inundation events, it was easily to find the main and branch lines where the rational method-based floods were smaller than SWMM based ones. Especially, the lines where rational method-based floods were underestimated, were mostly main, $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ lines. It was concluded that the rational method-based results were not conservative. Based on rational method (steady flow analysis) and SWMM (unsteady flow analysis), the more conservative results the method provides, the more highly it is recommended to use in designing an urban sewer system.

An Introductory Study for Developing the Urban Street Design Manual (도시부 도로의 구조시설.기준 작성 기초 연구 - 횡단구성을 중심으로 -)

  • Urbanization of Korea reaches up to 90% in the year 2003. What that means is that 90% of population live in the city areas. This phenomenon emphasizes importances of urban streets where people feel accessibility and level of environmental amenity, enjoy recreational activity, and live for a life. However, the current Korean manual for designing road is not enough to accomodate various activities of urban streets since its target is basically rural roads. This study proposes the necessity of a new design manual of urban streets via analyzing the practices of the development countries, and aims to recommend what should be prepared and how those are defined for developing a design manual of urban streets in Korea. It is inevitable that the design manual of urban streets be based on the flexibility and diversity. The manual should be made through consensus among the related stakeholders such as designers, residents and officials. And it also should reflect the characteristics of each city. It is somehow true that without the manual, designing of urban streets can be done although it is not fully acceptable. This does not mean that the necessity of the manual can be ignored. Rather, we should remember that the related stakeholders may not want to reveal what are hidden in developing the design manual of urban streets. What are hidden is that developing the design manual of urban streets is difficult problem to solve. It is a wish that this study triggers the on-going research and interests on developing the design manual of urban streets.

Designing the Butterfly Garden on the Rooftop of Parking Garage (주차장 옥상을 이용한 나비정원 설계)

  • Comprehensive landscape architectural services provided from schematic design through construction document for this 22,000 square foot, linear, urban rooftop garden situated on top of an in-ground parking garage. The Butterfly Garden serves as a green buffer between a fully renovated historic, seven story condominium building and 15 newly constructed luxury town houses. The park was developed with the cooperation and input from the Washington Butterfly Society during an intensive design charette. The garden will one day soon serve as an ecological amenity to the residents of Alban Towers as well as the surrounding community.

Hierarchical multiscale modeling for predicting the physicochemical characteristics of construction materials: A review

  • The growing demands for sustainable and high-performance construction materials necessitate a deep understanding of their physicochemical properties by that of these heterogeneities. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art hierarchical multiscale modeling approach aimed at predicting the intricate physicochemical characteristics of construction materials. Emphasizing the heterogeneity inherent in these materials, the review briefly introduces single-scale analyses, including the ab initio method, molecular dynamics, and micromechanics, through a scale-bridging technique. Herein, the limitations of these models are also overviewed by that of effectively scale-bridging methods of length or time scales. The hierarchical multiscale model demonstrates these physicochemical properties considering chemical reactions, material defects from nano to macro scale, microscopic properties, and their influence on macroscopic events. Thereby, hierarchical multiscale modeling can facilitate the efficient design and development of next-generation construction.

The Development of Extended Urban Land Information System for Sustainable Urban Management

  • This study aims to develop the Extended Urban Land Information System (EULIS) which can support the sustainable urban management. Although the existing Urban Land Use Information system (ULUIS) that aids the micro-level land use information is a good means for the understanding of urban spatial structure and district-level planning and management (such as urban design, redevelopment planning and district-level transportation planning, etc.), it has some limitations in supplying the information for sustainable urban management, such as environmental and traffic analysis, urban infrastructure's carrying capacity analysis, etc. The EULIS is designed to efficiently supply the information for sustainable urban management. For the successful construction of EULIS, the followings have to be considered. 1) the integration of topographic maps which contain the building's footprints and cadastral maps which contain the parcel's boundary, 2) the integration of EULIS and FM (Facility Management) system for the full utilization of information about capacity analysis of infrastructure, 3) the construction of standardized georeferencing system and spatial unit for the combined use of environment and traffic census data. This study shows 1) why EULIS is needed for the sustainable urban management and which elements are needed for the system,2) the E-R data model for the EULIS, 3) the strategies for the construction of EULIS and 4) the conclusion.

A Study on Design Method of Water Space in Ecological Park -focused on the ecological park in Seoul- (생태 공원내 수공간 조성 기법에 관한 연구 -서울특별시 생태 공원을 중심으로-)

  • The quality of urban environment where large population reside is becoming more vitally important than ever. Recently the city of Seoul has launched a 'green city' program converting number of city owned lots into urban parks. In this study, we first investigate four recently opened city parks with water ponds in Seoul. This study then classify these parks according to their respective designs, particularly addressing design and environmental impacts by water features. From these exercises, we derive the following interim findings: 1. Design patterns of waterscape is changing. 2. Water in the city park is a major design feature. 3. Design methodology for city parks must be studied further.

Analysis of Non-Point Source Pollution Reduction using Water Sensitive Urban Design in Gimhae, South Korea (김해시 물 순환 개선 도시계획에 의한 비점오염물질 저감효과 분석)

  • This study was performed to analyze the effects of a water circulation green area plan on non-point source pollution in Gimhae South Korea. A quantitative analysis of Arc-GIS data was conducted by applying a watershed model based on Fortran to investigate the changes to direct runoff and pollution load. Results showed that prior to the implementation of the water circulation green area plan in Gimhae, direct runoff was $444.05m^3/year$, total biological oxygen demand (BOD) pollution load was 21,696 kg/year, and total phosphorus (TP) pollution load was 1,743 kg/year. Implementation of the development plan was found to reduce direct runoff by 2.27%, BOD pollution load by 1.16% and TP pollution load by 0.19% annually. The reduction in direct runoff and non-point source pollution were attributed to improvements in the design of impermeable layers within the city.
