Operational Risk Assessment for Airworthiness Certification of Military Unmanned Aircraft Systems using the SORA Method

  • Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are rapidly emerging not only as a key military power, such as surveillance and reconnaissance for military purposes but also as a new air transportation means in the form of Urban Air Mobility (UAM). Currently, airworthiness certification is carried out focused on the verification of technical standards for flight safety suitability of aircraft design in accordance with the Military Aircraft Flight Safety Certification Act and does not employ the model for operational risk assessment for mission areas and airspace. In this study, in order to evaluate the risk of the mission area from the perspective of the UAS operator, a risk assessment simulation has been conducted by applying the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) model to the operating environment of the Korean military UAS. Also, the validity of the SORA model has been verified through the analysis of simulation results, and a new application plan for airworthiness certification of the military unmanned aerial system has been presented.

  • Throughout history, daylight has been a primary source of lighting in buildings, supplemented originally with burned fuels and more recently with electrical energy. Before daylight was supplemented or replaced with electric light in the late 19th-century, consideration of good daylight strategies was essential. As we entered the mid-20th-century, electric light supplanted daylight in buildings in many cases. Fortunately, during the last quarter of the 20th-century and early years of this century, architects and designers have recognized the importance and value of introducing natural light into buildings. There are many simple strategies that can enhance daylighting and reduce the need for electric lights. Good quality daylight is always welcome, but remember that the electric lights must be dimmed or shut off in order for daylighting to save energy. We designed and built mirror systems and vertical daylighting devices to improve daylight condition of office buildings in bad condition because urban density is getting higher. This case study aims to analysis the principles and characteristics of mirror systems and vertical daylighting devices and selected the method that can improve constructability. The results of this study are going to use the back data to set-up the design standards. Hereafter we're going to progress the performance test and product the design manual to improve applicability of daylighting systems at design phase.

Regulating Natural Lighting and Ventilation of Residential Buildings in Hong Kong Policy Implications for High-rise, High-density Housing Environments in South Korea

  • This study discusses the features of the lighting and ventilation regulations for residential buildings in Hong Kong. Given the compact built environment and public concerns about the environmental quality of housing, various lighting and ventilation regulations have been enacted in Hong Kong. The application of building regulations on the micro scale and incentive systems on the macro scale are present, and the governments' calls for more active participation of the private sector and use of the building environmental assessment tools were also noted. Unlike South Korea, however, Hong Kong was found to adopt more performance-based standards, consider the external factors of the lighting and ventilation conditions together with the indoor elements, and provide specific design guidelines. Notwithstanding the different climatic conditions and socio-political contexts of Hong Kong and South Korea, these findings provide some policy implications for the South Korean government in its efforts to achieve a healthy environment for high-rise, high-density housing. It is suggested that the South Korean government adopt more on-site measurement methods to reflect the environmental conditions accurately and broaden the scope and scale of the implementation of the lighting and ventilation regulations with more specific, practical planning and design guidelines.

  • Constructed structures, before the seismic design codes are established was not designed an earthquake resist. So, evaluate seismic performance of structures and appropriate strengthening are required. To seismic reinforcement of railway structures, literature investigation was conducted about a variety of domestic and international processing enhance and repair the existing maintenance. Also, facilities standardization group, in research group of railway standards, when applied the developed seismic reinforcement system to the railway, conducted the survey that can occur the uniqueness for construction. These specific changes that reflect the seismic reinforcement of the system was required to establish application requirements.

  • This study aims to investigate and improve the present state of technical standard on building mechanical system in Korea. At this point be tormented the energy depletions are big problem on the rise. Building mechanical system is configured air conditioning, sanitation, urban equipment. In the design of equipment, installation, maintenance, applies to all devices in the field of industrial equipment and general engineering equipment field are within bounds to say that all of the equipment field. However, domestic technology level is still fly short of international standards in architecture, we spent much energy. Because of this, find the current situation and identify the problems look up ways to improve them.

  • In case of rolling stock, SEMS is generally applied in the advanced countries, but is start stage in our country. SEMS is defined the system engineering management system in order to achieve the optimized train performance among the several client requirements aspect of technical engineering management during the design life cycle. And the fire engineering activities in hong kong EMU project are introduced aspect of SEMS in this paper. The fire engineering at rolling stock in view of SEMS controls to apply the satisfied interior material by the fire safety standards (regulation of the commute urban subway safety guideline by the MOCT, BS 6853, NFPA 130, NF F 16-101) and to minimize the fire load in order that passengers egress safe from the fired rolling stock. The rolling stock in the advanced countries is designed to stand for 15-20 minutes in considering the rolling stock to be fired in tunnel. For passenger fire safety, the passenger evacuation provision and progress is set up.

  • It becomes difficult and high in cost to construct new ducts and/or tunnels for power cables in metropolitan areas. This paper presents possible applications of an HTS superconducting power cables for transmitting electric power in metropolitan areas. Reflected were its important distinction such as compactness for installation in underground ducts and considerably high efficiency compared with present underground cables. In this paper, system modeling, transmission capacity and voltage class of compact HTS cables which should be applied to existing ducts were reviewed. Based on this, the following items on urban transmission system are examined. (1) A method of constructing a model system to introduce high temperature superconducting cables to metropolitan areas is presented. (2)The maximum outer diameter of HTS cables to be accommodated in exiting ducts is calculated based on the design standards for current cable ducts. (3)The voltage level that can be accommodated by existing ducts is examined.

A "Fabric-First" Approach to Sustainable Tall Building Design

  • This research suggests the most effective way for improving energy efficiency in tall buildings is a "fabric-first" approach. This involves optimizing the performance of the building form and envelope as a first priority, with additional technologies a secondary consideration. The paper explores a specific fabric-first energy standard known as "Passivhaus". Buildings that meet this standard typically use 75% less heating and cooling. The results show tall buildings have an intrinsic advantage in achieving Passivhaus performance, as compared to low-rise buildings, due to their compact form, minimizing heat loss. This means high-rises can meet Passivhaus energy standards with double-glazing and moderate levels of insulation, as compared to other typologies where triple-glazing and super-insulation are commonplace. However, the author also suggests that designers need to develop strategies to minimize overheating in Passivhaus high-rises, and reduce the quantity of glazing typical in high-rise residential buildings, to improve their energy efficiency.

A Study on the Operational Status of the Chamber for Testing the Thermal Performance of Curtain Walls

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze criteria for measurement chamber design dedicated curtain wall, and how to measure of performance configuration and status of the chamber that is currently being used. Main dealing criteria is AAMA 1503-09. Measurement of data is made in curtain wall Mock-up experiment station with thermal imaging camera. Measurement data using thermal imaging cameras at Mock-up curtain was made at the test site. The results of this study were as follows; There is no U-value test method for actual size of curtain wall. The thermal test outdoor chamber showed heat loss in the connection part of indoor and outdoor chamber. And the indoor chamber showed unstable temperature distribution by height.

Establishment of Design Factors and Procedure for Permeable Asphalt Pavements Structural Design (투수성 아스팔트 포장 구조설계를 위한 설계인자 도출 및 설계방법에 관한 연구)

  • An extensive effort is actively being made to implement permeable pavement systems in urban or residential areas of South Korea in order to achieve efficient water circulation system based on low impact development (LID) design concept. This study aims to establish the design factors and procedure for permeable asphalt pavements structural design. Based on the review of previous studies, the 1993 AASHTO design method is found to be adequate for permeable pavements structural design. In this study, the design program based on 1993 AASHTO design procedure in conjunction with domestic roadway design standards was developed to accommodate the characteristics of permeable asphalt pavements. Primary design parameters such as structural layer coefficients of permeable materials were successfully quantified based on literature reviews and parallel analyses. Comparable design thicknesses were obtained between the developed permeable pavement design (PPD) program and Korea pavement research program (KPRP) under different levels of traffic and subgrade load bearing capacity.
