  • This study analyzed upper-air temperatures in order to make temperature conditions for weapon system operating in Korean Peninsula. One of important tasks of environmental analysis is to set-up suitable temperature conditions for successful development of weapon system. Many weapon system developers are setting air temperature conditions based on the MIL-STD-810G. However, for weapons systems that are used only in the upper-air of the Korean Peninsula, the air temperature conditions recommended by MIL-STD-810G are often not suitable. To establish the air temperature conditions for upper-air in the Korean Peninsula, the method of Percentage of Occurrence should has be built up as method of temperature analysis. Upper-air climate data of the Korea Peninsulas over the past decade is also analyzed based on this method. The study suggest upper-air temperature conditions for weapons systems that are operated only in the Korean peninsula.

  • The airflow characteristics in both the upper plenum and the clean space of clean room are investigated by measuring the pressure distribution of the upper plenum and the velocity profile in the clean space, at the various conditions of the supplied airflow rate, the volume of upper plenum and the air supply type. The performance of vertical air supply type and horizontal air supply type is analyzed in terms of the airflow uniformity which is frequently used in indicating the clean room performance, and the relations among the volume of upper plenum, the supplied airflow rate and the airflow uniformity are confirmed. The results of this experimental study can be applied to the designing of the upper plenum of clean room.

  • A special upper-air observation including airsonde and pibal observations was performed to investigate the characteristics features of the vertical distribution of the meteorological elements over Taegu on a selected clear day of each season from October 1991 to August 1992. The diurnal and seasonal variations of the vertical profiles of air temperature and mixing ratio were obtained from airsonde observations and wind speed and direction from pibal observations. The results of these special upper-air observations are as follow : The diurnal variation of the vertical distribution of air temperature reveals the characteristic features associated with the atmospheric boundary layer. All case days, except for the summer season, show upper-level inversion layer which influenced by surface high, and surface inversion layer produced by radiative cooling. The diurnal variation of mixing ratio shows the maximum vale at 1500 LST in both the upper and low levels, and is larger on the lower level than the upper level. The mixing ratio of the lower level is larger than that of the upper level. On the average the mixing ratio decrease with the height, and is the wettest on the summer case day and the driest on the winter case day. The diurnal variation of the wind velocity and direction are variable in the lower level with time and height, while they are steady in the upper level. On the average, the wind direction is southerly or southeasterly for the summer case day, westerly or northwesterly for the spring and fall case days, and northerly or northwesterly for the winter case day.

  • The objective of this research is to analyze the ventilation effectiveness in the non-isothermal air supply using mixing and displacement ventilation systems for indoor air quality control and management. In this study, a ventilation effectiveness is evaluated in a simplified model chamber using a tracer gas technique of $CO^2$ gas injected into a supply duct as a function of ventilation rates, supply/extract sites and cooling/heating air supply. The ventilation effectiveness decreased with increasing ventilation rate on the cooling and heating conditions. And the ventilation effectiveness of case 3 (down supply and upper extract) was better thant that of case 1(upper supply and upper extract) and case 2(upper supply and down extract) with the cooling supply conditions. but for the heating supply air conditions, the ventilation effectiveness of case 2 was better than that of case 3 and case 1.

  • The feasibility of the automation of upper-air sounding is examined by using recent 3-year$(2002\sim2004)$ observation data from Autosonde at Haenam, Korea. The Autosonde has been successfully operated since 2002 in order to produce an intensive observation data at high-impact weather events for research purpose. It is found from the analysis of recent 3 years' operation data of the system that the system could be capable of making a stable observation when strong wind greater than 20 m/s was recorded under the influence of typhoons Rusa in 2002 and Maemi in 2003. It might be concluded that there is some possibility in automating upper-air sounding for operational purpose through the reduction of operator's payment and operating cost for upper-air sounding.

  • In this study, before and after sunset carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature were observed in two points of atmosphere (lower observation point of the GL + 0.1 m, the upper observation point of GL + 1.0 m) on the foreshore at located in Suncheon Bay and their variations were analyzed. Observation was performed on the foreshore on 2~4 August 2010. Instrument (VAISALA, GMP343) was set two hours before sunset and then observation was made continuously for six hours. In three days, observed carbon dioxide concentration was 375~419 ppm, and the air temperature was in the range of $28.7{\sim}32.5^{\circ}C$. The average concentration of carbon dioxide was 388~399 ppm in the upper observation point and 386~396 ppm in the lower observation point. It was higher in the upper observation point and its fluctuations were similar in two observation points. Correlation coefficients between carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature in the upper observation point were in the range of -0.64~-0.88, and were calculated -0.65 to -0.90 in the lower observation point. For the carbon dioxide concentration, correlation coefficients between the upper part and the lower part were very high as 0.98 in three times. For the air temperature, correlation coefficients between the upper part and the lower part were very high as 0.97 and 0.99. In the same observation time, the slope of the linear regression function as carbon dioxide concentration in the lower observation point for the upper observation point was in the range of 0.97~1.01. Carbon dioxide concentration was slightly higher in the upper observation point. Because carbon dioxide in the lower observation point was closer on the surface of the foreshore and absorbed from atmosphere to the foreshore. In this study, it was showed that the vertical variation of carbon dioxide concentration was insignificant in the several meter scale of atmosphere on the surface of the foreshore.

  • KMA performed the special observation program to provide information about severe weather and to monitor typhoon PRAPIROON using the ship which called the Gisang 1 from 29 June 2018 to 4 July 2018 (UTC). For this period, upper-air was observed 21 times with 6 hour intervals using rawinsonde in the Gisang 1. We investigated the impact of upper-air observation data from the Gisang 1 on the performance of the operational convective scale model (we called LDAPS). We conducted two experiments that used all observation data including upper-air observation data from the Gisang 1 (OPER) and without it (EXPR). For a typhoon PRAPIROON case, track forecast error of OPER was lower than EXPR until forecast 24 hours. The intensity forecast error of OPER for minimum sea level pressure was lower than EXPR until forecast 12 hours. The intensity forecast error of OPER for maximum wind speed was mostly lower than EXPR until forecast 30 hours. OPER showed good performance for typhoon forecast compared with EXPR at the early lead time. Two precipitation cases occurred in the south of the Korean peninsula due to the impact of Changma on 1 July and typhoon on 3 July. The location of main precipitation band predicted from OPER was closer to observations. As assimilating upper-air data observed in the Gisang 1 to model, it showed positive results in typhoon and precipitation cases.

  • In this study, carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature at different elevations were observed and analyzed in the upper atmosphere of mud flat and reed beds at low tide in Suncheon Bay. The carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature sensors were mounted on the drone, and the carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature by altitude (5 m, 10 m, 20 m, 40 m) at five points in the tidal flat and reed beds were observed in the morning and afternoon. The carbon dioxide concentrations in the upper atmosphere of the tidal flat ranged from 453.0 to 460.2 ppm in the morning and 441.6 to 449.7 ppm in the afternoon. The carbon dioxide concentrations in the upper atmosphere of the reed beds ranged from 448.9 to 452.4 ppm in the morning and 446.0 to 454.4 ppm in the afternoon. The carbon dioxide concentrations in the upper atmosphere of the tidal flat was higher in the morning than in the afternoon, and the carbon dioxide concentration decreased as the altitude increased. The carbon dioxide concentration in the upper atmosphere of the reed beds was similar in the morning and afternoon at all altitudes, and the carbon dioxide concentration decreased as the altitude increased. The correlation coefficient between carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature observed in the tidal flat in the morning was -0.54 ~ -0.77, and the correlation coefficient between carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature observed in the afternoon was 0.56 ~ 0.80. The correlation coefficient between carbon dioxide concentration and temperature observed in the morning in the reed field was low, below 0.3, and the correlation coefficient between carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature observed in the afternoon was 0.35 ~ 0.77. In the upper atmosphere of the tidal flats and reed beds, the linear function was suitable for the change of carbon dioxide concentration as a air temperature, and the coefficient of determination of the estimated linear function was higher in the afternoon than in the morning. Through this study, it was confirmed that the carbon dioxide concentration in the upper atmosphere of the tidal flat and the reed beds was different, and the increase rate of carbon dioxide concentration in the upper atmosphere of the tidal flat and the reed beds was higher in the afternoon than in the morning.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand distribution of ozone concentration in the south coastal region of Korea by evaluating ozone spatial distribution in the upper air using aircraft. Sampling was carried out from May to August in 2009. The average concentration of ozone in the upper air was ranged from 32.3~90.8 ppb with its maximum concentration of 132 ppb. When it comes to the spatial distribution of ozone, ambient concentration was high in the air, 1,000 m and 500 m above the southern sea near the Gwangyang Bay area and emission sources, respectively. Daily mean concentration of NOy was 6.7~24.2 ppb and that of CO was 0.152~0.487 ppm. In addition, the concentration was appeared to be relatively high in the upper air of industrial regions and the southern seas. Meanwhile, the concentration of both $NO_y$ and CO was high in the upper air of the emission sources regardless of latitude. As for PAN, its daily mean concentration ranged between 0.1 and 0.6 ppb with overall mean concentration of 0.2 ppb. The average concentration of VOCs was 48 ppb, and the concentration of toluene and m,p-Xylene were higher than other components.

  • In this study, the droplet size distribution of a slit injector at different surrounding conditions, such as air flow and fuel temperature, were investigated. Phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) was utilized to investigate the initial droplet size distribution and the effect of fuel temperature and air flow on droplet size distribution. The entrained air motion was also evaluated by the temporal velocity profile of droplets. When the air flow velocity increased, the small droplets were more entrained to the upper and central parts of the spray and this tendency was confirmed by plotting the temporal velocity profile of droplets. This entrainment of small droplets at high airflow velocities caused relatively small mean droplet size at upper and central parts of the spray and the large mean droplet size at downstream and edge of the spray, compared to that of low airflow velocities. The total mean droplet size, obtained by averaging the size of all droplets measured at all test locations, decreased when the high airflow velocities were applied. The increased fuel temperature, with an airflow velocity of 10m/s, caused reduced droplet size at all test locations. However, the decreased value of mean droplet size at high fuel temperatures was relatively higher at upper parts of the spray, compared to downstream, as a result of enhanced entrainment of small droplets to upper parts of the spray.
