  • The effect of moistening and air-drying of acid-conditioned dentin before priming on the formation of resin-dentin hybrid zone was investigated, Freshly extracted human molars were used and divided at random into 5 groups, Groups 1 - 3 consisted of specimens conditioned with 10 % phosphoric acid for 20 seconds; Group 1 served as a control in which the conditioned dentin was simply blot-dried with a damp facial tissue; Group 2 was air dried for 30 seconds ; Group 3 was air dried for 30 seconds and immediately remoistened for 10 seconds with air-water syringe. and then the specimen was blot-dried with a damp facial tissue. Groups 4-5 were not acid conditioned ; In group 4, the smear layer on the dentin was blot dried before primer placement; Group 5 was air dried only for 30 seconds, The acetone-based primer and bonding agent of All Bond 2 (Bisco. Inc., USA) and composite resin (Z-100, 3M Dental products, USA) were applied for acid conditioned dentin and non-conditioned dentin. The morphologic ultrastructure of resin-dentin hybrid zone was examined by the use of SEM and TEM. and the existence of inorganic material and analysis of Ca/P weight-percent ratio in the resin-dentin hybrid zone were revealed by the EDAX, The results were as follows : 1. In the moistened specimens from acid-conditioned groups, the resin penetrated about 3-$4{\mu}m$ into dentin and the denatured collagen smear layer was not present at the surface. The resin tag was formed to a thickeness of 3-$4{\mu}m$ at the upper part of dentinal tubule and compactively connected to each other by means of many lateral branching. 2. In the air-dried specimens from acid-conditioned groups, the resin penetrated about 2.0-$2.5\;{\mu}m$ into dentin and an upper thin black layer to a thickness of 30-35nm was identified between adhesive resin and demineralized collagen layer. The resin tag to have a diameter of $2.5{\mu}m$ was formed at the upper part of dentinal tubule. However the funnel shape of the tag was not notable compared to the moistened specimens. 3. In the remoistened specimens from acid conditioned groups, the resin penetrated about 2.0-$2.5{\mu}m$ into dentin and an upper black layer was not present. The resin tag at the upper part of dentinal tubule was formed less than $2{\mu}m$ and was weakly connected to each other by means of few lateral branching. 4. In the non-conditioned groups, the smear layer was formed to a thickness of $0.5{\mu}m$ at dentin surface. However, the resin-dentin hybrid zone was not identified by TEM. The evidence of resin penetration into intertubular and intratubular dentin did not show. 5. All the acid-conditioned groups showed that the detected calcium and phosphorus weight percent ratios at the $2{\mu}m$ upper portion from the resin-dentin interface into the resin were much higher than that at the $2{\mu}m$ lower portion from the resin-dentin interface to dentin. • The wind stress distribution over the East Sea of Korea was obtained from the shipboard observations of the Fisheries Research and Development Agency along the serial observation lines. These monthly and annual mean wind stress distributions were put into the simplified interface model which describes the latitudinal variations of the upper-layer thickness as function of the curl of the wind stress. The observed variations of the surface, zonally averaged winds indeed caused the upper-layer flow convergent and divergent at the latitudes that produced a tone of thick upper-layer or a deep permanent thermocline and the shallower depth with divergence. Thus, the wind field contributes positively to maintain the almost time-independent distribution of the interface of 'saddle like' feature in north-south direction over the study area.

  • It was studied the phenomena of transient freezing of an inclined water-saturated enclosure. One side of the test section was cooled and the other sides were insulated. The effects of the initial temperature, the inclination angle on the temperature field and the shape of the ice-water interface were observed. In the beginning of freezing, with increasing the inclination angle the freezing rate was increased and in the stable density layer centered $4^{\circ}C$, the freezing was fast as the convective fluid flow became small. When the initial temperature was above the $4^{\circ}C$, the frozen thickness in the upper part of inclined surface was thinner than that in the lower part, but with time the frozen thickness of upper part was thicker than that of lower part, below the $4^{\circ}C$, the frozen thickness in the upper part was thicker than that of lower part from the begining, and above the $8^{\circ}C$ in the beginning upper part was thinner with concave, but with time thicker the upper part, vanishing concave.

  • In this paper, we conducted MATLAB simulation using the reflectance formula and the Planck's black body radiation principle, for the purpose of identifying the opimum material and thickness of anti-reflective coating from double layered structures. We found that the optimum condition was obtained when refractive index of upper layer is 1.44 and that of lower layer is 2.29. As materials close to these refractive indices, $MgF_2$ as the upper layer and $HfO_2$, ZnS, $TiO_2$ as the lower layer were suggested. The best result in an average reflectance of 2.759% was obtained from a double layered structure of $MgF_2$ 94 nm/ZnS 55 nm.

  • The improvement of critical current properties of $REBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (REBCO) coated conductors by introducing artificial pinning centers (APCs) is examined with respect to the field-angle anisotropy, high-field performance and relaxation property with time. Nano-rods along the c-axis introduced by PLD method and isotropic nano-particles introduced by TFA-MOD method are treated. The theoretical analysis is also shown to understand the effect of APCs quantitatively. The effects of superconducting layer thickness that influences the high-field performance and relaxation property are also discussed. It is shown that the upper critical field, which is another important factor to determine the high-field property, can be improved by introduction of APCs through electron scattering at interfaces with the superconducting matrix. The optimum critical current property can be obtained by properly designing the morphology and number density of APCs and the superconducting layer thickness.

  • This paper reports the theoretical model and the experimental results regarding to the electrical conductivity of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The total effective conductance of a-Si:H with a planar structure has been considered as the sum of the conductance of an adsorbate-induced layer, a surface-interface layer, a bulk layer, and a substrate-interface layer. In order to investigate the effects of space charge layers in a-Si:H on the conductivity, the thickness dependence of the conductivity is characterized and the conductivities measured at the upper electrodes deposited on a-Si:H are compared with those measured at the lower electrodes deposited on the glass substrate. From our analysis, the bulk conductivity and the thickness of the space charge layer in a-Si:H are characterized quantitatively.

  • A general description of sprinkler activation time in compartment-fire-generated smoke layers is made. For calculation of the time hot layer temperature is obtained from two-layer zonal model and time constant of sprinkler is measured. Upper-layer thickness at the instant of sprinkler activation is also presented with changes of opening area. The outputs of the present study provide inputs for the interaction modeling of sprinkler spray and compartment fire environment, which simulates fire suppression phenomena.

  • The cohesive non-swelling soil (CNS) cushion technology has been widely applied in the subgrade and slope improvement at expansive soil regions. However, the mechanism of the inhibition effect of the CNS layer on expansive soil (ES) has not been fully understood. We performed four outdoor model tests to further understand the inhibition effect, including different kinds of upper layer and thickness, under the unidirectional seepage condition. The swelling deformation, soil pressure, and electrical resistivity were constantly monitored during the saturation process. It is found that when a CNS layer covered the ES layer, the swelling deformation and electrical resistivity of the ES layer decreased significantly, especially the upper part. The inhibition effect of the CNS layer increases with the increase of CNS thickness. The distribution of vertical and lateral soil pressure also changed with the covering of a CNS layer. The electrical resistivity can be an effective index to describe the swelling deformation of ES layer and analyze the inhibition effect of the CNS layer. Overall, the CNS deadweight and the ion migration are the major factors that inhibit the swelling deformation of expansive soil.

  • This Paper shows the results of a series of model tests on the behavior of single rigid Pile, which subjected to lateral load, in non-homogeneous Nak-Dong River sands, consisted of two layers, upper and lower layers. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effect of ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length ratio of soil modules of upper to lower layer (E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/) and pile head constraint condition on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. As a model test result, in non-homogeneous sand, it shows that the lateral behavior depends upon the ratio of soil modules of upper to lower layer more than other factors. And, in respect of deflection, it was found that the reduction ratio of deflection by pile head fixity is the value of 0.5 and 0.6 for E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=0.18 and E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=5.56, respectively. The critical thickness of lower layer on the change of deflection is about 25 - 50% of pile embedded length. Also, in respect of maximum bending moment it was found that the reduction ratio of maximum bending moment by pile head fixity is the value of 0.55 and 0.7 for E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=0.18 and E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=5.56, respectively.
