This study aimed to develop upper and lower bounds to predict the tunnel support pressure under the pile tip during the circular tunnel excavation. Most previous studies on the upper and lower bound methods were carried out for the single ground structures, e.g., retaining wall, foundation, ground anchor and tunnel, in the homogeneous ground conditions, since the pile-soil-tunnel interaction problem is very complicated and sophisticated to solve using those bound methods. Therefore, in the lower bound approach two appropriate stress fields were proposed for single pile and tunnel respectively, and then they were superimposed. In addition, based on the superimposition several failure mechanisms were proposed for the upper bound solution. Finally, these upper bound mechanisms were examined by shear strain data from the laboratory model test and numerical analysis using finite element method.
In urban areas, new tunnel construction work is often taking place adjacent to existing piled foundations. In this case, careful assessment for the pile-soil-tunnel interaction is required. However, research on this topic has not been much reported, and currently only limited information is available. In this study, the complex pile-soil-tunnel interaction is investigated using the upper and lower bound methods based on kinematically possible failure mechanism and statically admissible stress field respectively. It is believed that the limit theorem is useful in understanding the complicated interaction behaviour mechanism and applicable to the pile-soil-tunnel interaction problem. The results are compared with numerical analysis. The material deformation patterns and strain data from the FE output are shown to compare well with the equivalent physical model tests. Admissible stress fields and the failure mechanisms are presented and used to develop upper and lower bound solutions to assess minimum support pressures within the tunnel.

Business managers are often required to use LP problems to deal with uncertainty inherent in decision making due to rapid changes in today's business environments. Uncertain parameters can be easily formulated in the two-stage stochastic LP problems. However, since solution methods are complex and time-consuming, a common approach has been to use modified formulations to provide upper and lower bounds on the two-stage stochastic LP problem. One approach is to use an expected value problem, which provides upper and lower bounds. Another approach is to use “walt-and-see” problem to provide upper and lower bounds. The objective of this paper is to propose a modified approach of “wait-and-see” problem to provide an upper bound and to compare the relative error of optimal value with various upper and lower bounds. A computing experiment is implemented to show the relative error of optimal value with various upper and lower bounds and computing times.

RSA is known as one of the best techniques for securing secret information across an unsecured network. The private key which is one of private parameters is the aim for attackers. However, it is exceedingly impossible to derive this value without disclosing all unknown parameters. In fact, many methods to recover the private key were proposed, the performance of each algorithm is acceptable for the different cases. For example, Wiener's attack is extremely efficient when the private key is very small. On the other hand, Fermat's factoring can quickly break RSA when the difference between two large prime factors of the modulus is relatively small. In general, if all private parameters are not disclosed, attackers will be able to confirm that the private key is unquestionably inside the scope [3, n - 2], where n is the modulus. However, this scope has already been reduced by increasing the greatest lower bound to [dil, n - 2], where dil ≥ 3. The aim of this paper is to decrease the least upper bound to narrow the scope that the private key will remain within this boundary. After finishing the proposed method, the new scope of the private key can be allocated as [dil, dir], where dir ≤ n - 2. In fact, if the private key is extremely close to the new greatest lower bound, it can be retrieved quickly by performing a brute force attack, in which dir is decreased until it is equal to the private key. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is extremely effective when the difference between prime factors is close to each other and one of two following requirement holds: the first condition is that the multiplier of Euler totient function is very close to the public key's small value whereas the second condition is that the public key should be large whenever the multiplier is far enough.
This study introduces the diagrammatic Upper and Lower Bound (UB and LB) methods theoretically in order to derive the bearing capacity factor, $N_c$ in undrained clay and to compare with Prandtl's exact solution (1921). As a result of the theoretical study, an exact solution comes out when the UB and LB solutions are the same. In addition, the finite element analyses show that the failure loads approach to the bearing capacity factor of 5.14. Results of the FEA significantly depend on the finite element type, a number of elements, and a number of increments. From this study the exact solution defines that solutions from UB and LB are the same. However, this situation is very difficult to process, so we can confirm the exact solution as a range between UB and LB solutions.

Eigenstructure of a spatial design matrix of Matheron's variogram estimator in $R^1$ is derived. It is shown that the spatial design matrix in $R^1$ with n/2$\le$h < n has a nice spectral decomposition. The mean, variance, and covariance of this estimator are obtained using the eigenvalues of a spatial design matrix. We also found that the lower bound and the upper bound of the normalized Matheron's variogram estimator.

The evaluation process of rock mass properties intrinsically contains some uncertainty due to the inhomogeneity of rock mass and the measurement error. Although various empirical methods for the determination of rock mass properties were suggested, there is no way of integrating various information on rock mass properties except averaging. For these reasons, this research introduces evidence theory which can model epistemic uncertainty and yield reasonable rock mass properties through combining various information such as empirical equations, in-situ test results, and so on. Through the application of evidence theory to the real site investigation and in situ experiment results, an interval of deformation modulus, cohesion and friction angle of rock mass were obtained. The ratios between lower and upper bound of those properties ranges from 1.6 to 3.6. Numerical analyses of circular hole using the properties for TYPE-2 rock mass were carried out. The magnitude or size of plastic region and radial displacement in case of lower bound properties is about 4 times larger than that of upper bound properties.
Determining the absolute neutrino mass scale and the neutrino mass hierarchy are central goals in particle physics, with important implications for the Standard Model. However, the final answer may come from cosmology, as laboratory experiments provide measurements for two of the squared mass differences and a stringent lower bound on the total neutrino mass - but the upper bound is still poorly constrained, even when considering forecasted results from future probes. Cosmological tracers are very sensitive to neutrino properties and their total mass, because massive neutrinos produce a specific redshift-and scale-dependent signature in the power spectrum of the matter and galaxy distributions. Stringent upper limits on ${\sum}m_v$ will be essential for understanding the neutrino sector, and will nicely complement particle physics results. To this end, we describe here a series of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations which include massive neutrinos, specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Baryon Acoustic Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and focused on the Lyman-${\alpha}$ ($Ly{\alpha}$) forest - also a useful theoretical ground for upcoming surveys such as SDSS-IV/eBOSS and DESI. We then briefly highlight the remarkable constraining power of the $Ly{\alpha}$ forest in terms of the total neutrino mass, when combined with other state-of-the-art cosmological probes, leaving to a stringent upper bound on ${\sum}m_v$.

In this paper, we propose two fast block matching algorithm using the distribution of mean absolute difference (MAD) at the search region overlapped with neighbor blocks and pixel subsapmling. The proposed methods use the lower and upper bound of MAD at the overlapped search region which is calculated from the MAD of neighbor block at that search position and MAD between the current block and neighbor block. In the first algorithm, we can reduce the computational complexity by executing the block matching operation at the only necessary search points. That points are selected using the lower bound of MAD. In the second algorithm, we use the statictical distribution of actual MAD which exists between the lower bound and upper bound of MAD. By using the statistical distribution of actual MAD, we can significantly reduce the computational complexity for motion estimation. after striking space key 2 times.

For the competitive business environment under purchase dependence, this paper proposes a new approximate calculation of order fill rate which is a probability of satisfying a customer order immediately using the existing inventory. Purchase dependence is different to demand dependence. Purchase dependence treats the purchase behavior of customers, while demand dependence considers demand correlation between items, between regions, or over time. Purchase dependence can be observed in such areas as marketing, manufacturing systems, and distribution systems. Traditional computational methods have a difficulty of the curse of dimensionality for the large cases, when deriving the stationary joint distribution which is utilized to calculate the order fill rate. In order to escape the curse of dimensionality and protect the solution from diverging for the large cases, we develop a greedy iterative search algorithm based on the Gauss-Seidel method. We show that the greedy iterative search algorithm is a dependable algorithm to derive the stationary joint distribution of on-hand inventories in the retailer system by conducting a comparison analysis of a greedy iterative search algorithm with the simulation. In addition, we present some managerial insights such as : (1) The upper bound of order fill rate can be calculated by the one-item pure system, while the lower bound can be provided by the pure system that consists of all items; (2) As the degree of purchase dependence declines while other conditions remain same, it is observed that the difference between the lower and upper bounds reduces, the order fill rate increases, and the order fill rate gets closer to the upper bound.
