  • A 67-year-old female patient diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis visited our hospital in February 2023. Consultation papers indicated that she was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis and that she complained of quadriparesis and numbness in both hands and feet. However, her spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) did not clearly indicate that she suffered from acute transverse myelitis. She was then sent to a high-level hospital and diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome through electromyography, cerebrospinal fluid test, and spine MRI. On March 2023, she visited our hospital again, still complaining about weakness in both hands and inability to walk. She was treated with Korean medicine, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine such as Yanggyeoksanhwatang and Sipimijihwang-tanggami. After three months, she was discharged on cane walking. The manual muscle test (MMT) grade of her upper limbs increased from 3-/3-/3-/3- (shoulder/elbow/wrist/fingers) to 4/4/4/3+, and the MMT grade of her lower limbs increased from 2/2/2/2 (pelvis/knee/ankle/feet) to 4/4/4-/4-. Her numbness in both feet disappeared, and her numbness in both hands decreased from a numeric rating scale of 7 to 2. No adverse events were reported during treatment. This case implies the therapeutic potential of Korean medicine for Guillain-Barre Syndrome, especially for those who had delayed diagnosis and missed the opportunity to get plasma exchange.

Method : We treated a 33-year-old man was afflicted with tinea pedis complicating id reaction with herbal medicine, acupuncture, ointment, wet-dressing and steam treatment. After treatments, we measured the status of scales, fissures and the degree of pruritus. We followed up symptom changes by taking pictures and compared before and after. Result & Conclusion : Three days after admission, erythema occurred at upper and lower limbs and the degree of pruritus increased by id reaction. As tinea pedis improved, id reaction decreased, too. Consequently, both sites of primary lesions of tinea pedis and secondary id reactions were significantly improved, and accompanied symptoms were resolved simultaneously.

Methods : The patient was treated by acupuncture, Su-Gi therapy, herbal medication, physical treatment. To determine the effects of Korean medical treatment, we evaluated every four days used by Korean version of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (KALSFRS-R), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Severity Scale(ALSSS). Results : Before mental contraction caused by everyday life nursing management, symptoms such as lumbar pain, getting hoarse, lower limb powerless & spasticity, upper limbs powerless, neckache, tongue-tied etc. were improved after above treatment. K-ALSFRS-R and ALSSS scores were also increased till patient's mental contraction Conclusions : The Korean medical treatment is effective on local symptoms of ALS, and there is also functional improvement of ALS diagnosed by external examination. It is necessary to have more examination about ALS.

  • Objective: This study reports on the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment in a patient with intracerebral hemorrhages with symptoms of hemiplegia, personality change, and aphasia. Case presentation: The patient was treated using Korean medicine, including Jayumkeonbi-tang with deer antler as herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, and a limb activation exercise. To evaluate the effect on clinical symptoms, a manual muscle test, the Modified Functional Ambulation Classification, and the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index were used. After 84 days of treatment, the MMT grade of the right upper and lower limbs improved from Gr. 2+/2- to Gr. 4/3~4 on average, and personality change and aphasia were gone. Conclusion: A complex treatment that includes Jaeumkunbi-tang, acupuncture, moxibustion, and limb activation exercises can be effective following an intracerebral hemorrhage resulting in hemiplegia and personality change. However, more research is needed.
