We investigated the effects of temperature changes on the oxygen consumption rhythm in Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, using an automatic intermittent flow respirometer (AIFR). The endogenous rhythm of the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) in the eels (n = 18; 44-74 cm, 145-690 g), freshly collected by bag net from estuaries, was nearly synchronous with the tidal pattern of the estuarine collection site. The magnitude of mean OCR (mOCR) of eels showed variable range of 82.2 - 116.5 ml $O_2\;kg^{-1}ww \;h^{-1}$ under constant conditions. In case of increasing temperature from 25 to $38^{\circ}C$, the OCR of eels exhibited a gradually increasing trend with a rhythmic pattern until $36^{\circ}C$. Above $36^{\circ}C$ the rhythms of the OCR dampened and the OCR decreased rapidly at around $36-37^{\circ}C$. The OCR of the eels exhibited the maximum value at $38^{\circ}C$, and then it sharply decreased. The results suggested that the critical thermal maximum (CTM) regarding the endogenous rhythms of the eels was at around $36-37^{\circ}C$ when water temperature increased at $0.5^{\circ}C$/14 h following the acclimation at $25^{\circ}C$. In case of decreasing temperature ($0.5^{\circ}C$/14 h) from 25 to $0^{\circ}C$, the OCR of the eels displayed a abrupt decrease up to $23^{\circ}C$, and between at 23 and $20^{\circ}C$, there was an agitation which showed a slight increase in the OCR with a duration of 1-2 days. Below $9^{\circ}C$, the OCR rhythm of the eels showed a constant state regardless of temperature decreasing. These results suggest that the Japanese eel has an upper incipient lethal temperature at $36^{\circ}C$, with a lower thermal limit at $9^{\circ}C$. The biochemical aspects of the eels influenced by water temperature need to be further studied.
Background: Ovarian cancer is ranked as the fifth most common cause of cancer death in women. In Malaysia, it is the fourth most common cancer in females. CA125 has been the tumor marker of choice in ovarian cancer but its diagnostic specificity in early stages is only 50%. Hence, there is a critical need to identify an alternative tumor marker that is capable of detecting detect ovarian cancer at an early stage. HE4 is a new tumor marker proposed for the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer and disease recurrence. Currently, none of the normal ranges of HE4 quoted in the literature are based on data for a multiethnic Asian population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine reference intervals for HE4 in an Asian population presenting in University Malaya Medical Centre, a tertiary reference hospital. Materials and Methods: 300 healthy women were recruited comprising 150 premenopausal and 150 postmenopausal women, aged from 20-76 years. All women were subjected to a pelvic ultrasonograph and were confirmed to be free from ovarian pathology on recruitment. Serum HE4 levels were determined by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA, Abbott Architect). The reference intervals were determined following CLSI guidelines (C28-A2) using a non-parametric method. Results: The upper limits of the $95^{th}$ percentile reference interval (90%CI) for all the women collectively were 64.6 pmol/L, and 58.4 pmol/L for premenopausal) and 69.0 pmol/L for postmenopausal. The concentration of HE4 was noted to increase with age especially in women who were more than 50 years old. We also noted that our proposed reference limit was lower compared to the level given by manufacturer Abbott Architect HE4 kit insert (58.4 vs 70 pmol/L for premenopausal group and 69.0 vs 140 pmol/L in the postmenopausal group). The study also showed a significant difference in HE4 concentrations between ethnic groups (Malays and Indians). The levels of HE4 in Indians appeared higher than in Malays (p<0.05), while no significant differences were noted between the Malays and Chinese ethnic groups. Conclusions: More data are needed to establish a reference interval that will better represent the multiethnic Malaysian population. Probably a larger sampling size of equal representation of the Malay, Chinese, Indians as well as the other native ethnic communities will give us a greater confidence on whether genetics plays a role in reference interval determination.
Three-dimensional slope stability analysis was applied to a failed dual-lithology slope containing both granite and an andesitic dyke, taking account of the differences in shear strength of the different lithologies. A direct shear test of the soil-rock boundary was performed to examine the shear strength of two different types of failure surfaces within different lithologies, and a laboratory test was performed on an upper, weathered soil layer. The test results indicate that shear strength was lower at the soil-rock boundary than within the weathered soil layer. A representative geological section was subjected to two-dimensional slope stability analysis using a limit equilibrium method to assess whether the distribution of lithologies upon the slope influences the results of stability analysis. The results were then compared with those of three-dimensional slope stability analysis, for which input parameters can be varied according to the distribution of lithologies upon the slope. The three-dimensional analysis yielded safety factors of 1.26 under dry conditions and 0.55 under wet conditions, whereas the two-dimensional analysis yielded unstable safety factors of 0.92 and 0.32, respectively. These findings show that the results of stability analysis are affected by the distribution of different lithologies upon the slope. Given that the studied slope collapsed immediately after rainfall, it is likely that the results of the three-dimensional analysis are more reliable.
Due to the physical characteristics of NAND flash memory, overwrite operations are not permitted at the same location, and therefore erase operations are required prior to rewriting. These extra operations cause performance degradation of NAND flash memory file system. Since it also has an upper limit to the number of erase operations for a specific location, frequent erases should reduce the lifetime of NAND flash memory. These problems can be resolved by delaying write operations in order to improve I/O performance: however, it will lower the cache hit ratio. This paper proposes a policy of page management using double cache for NAND flash memory file system. Double cache consists of Real cache and Ghost cache to analyze page reference patterns. This policy attempts to delay write operations in Ghost cache to maintain the hit ratio in Real cache. It can also improve write performance by reducing the search time for dirty pages, since Ghost cache consists of Dirty and Clean list. We find that the hit ratio and I/O performance of our policy are improved by 20.57% and 20.59% in average, respectively, when comparing them with the existing policies. The number of write operations is also reduced by 30.75% in average, compared with of the existing policies.
PURPOSES : The use of environmentally friendly construction methods has been recently encouraged to reduce fuel consumption and the effects of global warming. For this purpose, the roller compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) construction method has been developed. RCCP is more environmentally friendly and economically efficient than general concrete by reducing the amount of CO2 generated through the application of a smaller amount of cement. RCCP has a number of advantages such as an easy construction method, low cost, high structural hydration performance, and aggregate interlocking. However, mix design standards and construction guidelines of RCCP are required for domestic application. In addition, a study on aggregate selection, which has an effect on the characteristics of RCCP, is necessary owing to a limited number of researches. Thus, the aggregate effect on the performance of RCCP in securing the required strength and workability was evaluated in consideration of domestic construction. METHODS : Sand and coarse aggregates of both 19mm and 13mm in maximum size were used in this study. Four types of aggregate gradations (s/a = 30%, 58%, and 70% for the sand and coarse aggregate of 19mm in maximum size, and s/a = 50% for a combination of the three types of aggregates) were set up to investigate the effects of the PCA band on the RCC characteristics. The conditions of s/a = 30% and 70% were evaluated to check the gradation effect outside of the recommended band. The conditions of s/a = 58% and 50% were used because they are the optimum combination of the two and three types of aggregates, respectively. RCCP gradation band was suggested gradation with a proper construction method of RCCP by synthetically comparing and analyzing the correlation of optimum water content, maximum dry density, and strength of requirements through its consistency and compaction test. RESULTS : The lower and upper limit lines are insufficient to secure a relatively strong development and workability compared to an aggregate gradation in the RCCP gradation band region. On the other hand, the line in the RCCP gradation band and the 0.45 power curve in the RCCP gradation band region were satisfactory, ensuring the required strength and workability. CONCLUSIONS : The suitable aggregate gradation on RCCP process should meet the RCCP gradation band area; however, fine particles passing through a #60 sieve do not need to be within the recommended gradation band because the influence of this region on such fine particles is small.
Steel box girder bridges are being commonly designed for medium-span bridges of span length. Composite truss bridges with steel diagonals instead of concrete webs can be an excellent design alternative, because it can reduce the dead weight of superstructures. One of the key issues in the design of composite truss bridges is the joint structureconnecting the diagonal steel members with the upper and lower concrete slabs. Because the connection has to carry concentrated combined loads and the design provisions for the joint are not clear, it is necessary to investigate the load transfer mechanism and the design methods for each limit state. There are various connection details according to the types of diagonal members. In this paper, the joint structure with group stud connectors welded on a gusset plate is used. Push-out tests for the group stud connectors of were performed. The test results showed that the current design codes on the ultimate strength ofthe stud connection can be used when the required minimum spacing of stud connectors is satisfied. Flexure-shear tests were conducted to verify the applicability of the design provisions for combined load effects to the strength of joint structures. To increase the pullout strength of the connection, bent studs were proposed and utilized for the edge studs in the group arrangement of the joint. The results showed that the details of the joint structure were enhanced. Thereafter, design guidelines were proposed.

HSA800 is a new high strength steel (HSS) plate for building structures developed by POSCO and RIST in 2011. It has upper and lower bounds for yield ($F_y$) and tensile ($F_u$) strength as of 650-770MPa and 800-950MPa, respectively, with yield ratio ($F_y/F_u$) limit as of 0.85 which make steel quality more reliable and enhance the seismic resistance of structures. As made by TMCP, it has a good weldability without increasing carbon percentage. The objective of this study is to provide alternative design of mega-structural members of the Lotte World Tower (555m, 123 story), a first super-tall building in Korea, using HSS considering structural safety, constructability, and cost-effectiveness. Steel outrigger trusses, belt-trusses and steel exterior columns were selected and analyzed to evaluate the structural performance between original and alternative designs using HSS. The results show that HSS can be applied to the members which do not affect lateral stiffness of a building and, in this study, approximately 1100tons of steel were saved. It implies that HSS can save overall construction costs - manufacturing, delivery, and erection costs - by reducing mega structural member size. HSA800 was very first applied to the Lotte World Tower based on the results of this study.

The matching condition at a perforated wall with vertical slits involves the permeability parameter, which can be calculated by two different methods. One expresses the permeability parameter in terms of energy dissipation coefficient and jet length at the perforated wall, being advantageous in that all the related variables are known, but it gives wrong result in the limit of long waves. The other expresses the permeability parameter in terms of friction coefficient and inertia coefficient, giving correct result from short to long waves, but the friction coefficient should be determined on the basis of a best fit between measured and predicted values of such hydrodynamic coefficients as reflection and transmission coefficients. In the present study, an empirical formula for the friction coefficient is proposed in terms of known variables, i.e., the porosity and thickness of the perforated wall and the water depth. This enables direct estimation of the friction coefficient without invoking a best fit procedure. To obtain the empirical formula, hydraulic experiments are carried out, the results of which are used along with other researchers' results. The proposed formula is used to predict the reflection and transmission coefficients of a curtain-wall-pile breakwater, the upper part of which is a curtain wall and the lower part consisting of a perforated wall with vertical slits. The concurrence between the experimental data and calculated results is good, verifying the appropriateness of the proposed formula.
The effect of fat content, thickness, and storage temperature and period of fresh meat samples on the migration of di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate(DEHA) from plasticized PVC film was investigated. Pork samples were prepared to have different fat contents by mixing with pork loin and pork backfat and stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 2 d. The migration values of DEHA into the pork samples were increased with a high fat content. There was a gradual increase in the DEHA concentration as a function of prolonged exposure period and elevated storage temperature when the pork samples were stored at -2, 5 and l0$^{\circ}C$ for up to 7 d, respectively. The migration of DEHA into fresh pork and beef was limited only to a small depth under the meat surface($\leq$2 cm). The migration value was higher when the pork belly was wrapped double with plasticized PVC film compared to once after storage at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 3 d. However, when the samples was minced and repacked with new film after 2 d, and kept for a further 1 d, these showed lower migration value compared to the above two intact samples. Migration values exceeded in most cases the upper limit for DEHA migration proposed by the EU(18 mg/kg or 3 mg/d㎡), even though no limitation is currently set in Korea.
