  • Tomas Gutiérrez Alea, internationally famous cuban director, made the film Up to a certain point with a purpose of criticizing the existence of the extreme male chauvinism as 'machismo' in cuban society of 80's despite of many changes of cultural and social paradigms through 60's and 70's. The director gathered the themes and topics of the films like Lucia, One way or another, and Teresa's portrait and analyzed them to present alternatives. The way of approaching to solve that kind of social problems that Alea proposed to the spectator is taking time to think of the problems with a way of "The Viewer's Dialectic". Identification with the protagonist of the film(thesis) and alienation from him(antithesis) could make the audience generalize the diverse aspects of the problem and then one might get an insight(synthesis) to live the life with more satisfaction that is supposed to be a social function of the film as arts according to the director of the film Up to a certain point.

폴리에스테르 직물의 발수발유 가공처리가 유성오구의 부착 및 제거에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Water-and Oil-Repellent Finishes on the Deposition and Removal of Oily Soils from Polyester Fabrics)

  • The effects of water-and oil-repellent finishes on the deposition and removal of oily soils from polyseter fabrics were investigated in this study. The polyester fabrics treated with three kinds of fluoropolymers(TG-410H, TG-990) were soiled with mixed oily soils and washed by using Terg-O-Tometer at various conditions. It was found that TG-410H and TG-527 treated polyester fabrics reduced significantly the deposition of oily soils than untreated and TG-990 treated polyester fabrics. The removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics was increased in porportion to increasing of surfactant concentration up to a certain point(0.2% owb) but it levelled off above the point. The removal effect was high in the order of TG-990 treated polyester fabrics > untreated polyester fabrics > TG-527 treated polyester fabrics > TBG-410H treasted polyester fabrics. Especially the removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics was more effectively removed in triton X-100 solution. In general the removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics treated with fluoropolymers was increased up to a miximum near 6$0^{\circ}C$ and than decreased above 6$0^{\circ}C$. And efficient removal could be achieved within relatively short time (30min) The removal of oily soils from polyester fabrics was increased in proportion to increasing of pH range up to a certain point(9.5 or 11.0) but it began to decrease above the point. Furthermore the removal of oily soils was increased with th increase of mechanical agitation, but it began to decrease above 160 rpm.

An Interior Point Method based Reactive Optimal Power Flow Incorporating Margin Enhancement Constraints

  • This paper describes a reactive optimal power flow incorporating margin enhancement constraints. Margin sensitivity at a steady-state voltage instability point is calculated using invariant space parametric sensitivity, and it can provide valuable information for selection of effective control parameters. However, the weakest buses in neighboring regions have high margin sensitivities within a certain range. Hence, the control determination using only the sensitivity information might cause violation of operational limits of the base operating point, at which the control is applied to enhance voltage stability margin in the direction of parameter increase. This paper applies an interior point method (IPM) to solve the optimal power flow formulation with the margin enhancement constraints, and shunt capacitances are mainly considered as control variables. In addition, nonlinearity of margin enhancement with respect to control of shunt capacitance is considered for speed-up control determination in the numerical example using the IEEE 118-bus test system.

음성과 인상의 관계규명을 위한 실험적 연구 (Voice and Image: A Pilot Study)

  • When we hear someone's voice, even without having met the person before, we usually make up a certain mental image of the person. This study aims at investigating the relationship between the voice and the image information carried within the voice. Does the mental picture created by the voice closely reflect the real image and if not, is it related with the real image at all\ulcorner To answer the first question, a perception experiment was carried out. Speech samples reading a short sentence from 8 males and 8 females were recorded and pictures of subjects were also taken. Ajou University students were asked to participate in the experiment to match the voice with the corresponding picture. Participants in the experiment correctly match 1 female voice and 4 male voices with their corresponding pictures. However, it is interesting to note that even in cases of mismatch, the results show that there is a very strong tendency. In other words, even though participants falsely match a certain voice with a certain picture, majority of them chose the same picture for the voice. It is the case for all mismatches. It seems that voice does give the listener a certain impression about physical characteristics even if it might not be always correct. By showing that there is a clear relationship between voice and image, this study provides a starting point for further research on voice characteristics: what characteristics of the voice carry the relevant information\ulcorner This kind of study will contribute toward the understanding of the affective domain of human voice and toward the speech technology.

가변용량형 피스톤펌프의 파라미터 추정 (Estimation of Parameters in a Variable Displacement Piston Pump)

  • An estimation technique called the Extended Kalman filter is used to estimate viscous friction, spring initial contraction, and the spring constant on the swash plate of a variable displacement pump. The feasibility of the approach was established using a simulation study. It showed that these parameters could be estimated very accurately in a reliable and independent fashion. A special experimental system was set up to facilitate the measurement of certain states to enhance the Kalman Filtering approach. The aforementioned parameters were estimated and found to be reasonably repeatable for a common operating point. It was very evident that as the operating conditions changed (i.e. temperature) so did the estimated values of certain parameters such as viscous friction. This was believed to be a good verification test for the approach.

An innovative idea for developing a new gamma-ray dosimetry system based on optical colorimetry techniques

  • Obtaining knowledge of the absorbed dose up-taken by a certain material when it is exposed to a specific ionizing radiation field is a very important task. Even though there are a plenitude of methods for determining the absorbed dose, each one has its own strong points and also drawbacks. In this article, an innovative idea for the development of a new gamma-ray dosimetry system is proposed. The method described in this article is based on optical colorimetry techniques. A color standard is fixed to the back of a BK-7 glass plate and then placed in a point in space where the absorbed dose needs to be determined. Gamma-ray-induced defects (color centers) in the glass plate start occurring, leading to a degree of saturation of the standard color, which is proportional, on a certain interval, to the absorbed dose. After the exposure, a high-quality digital image of the sample is taken, which is then processed (MATLAB), and its equivalent $I_{RGB}$ intensity value is determined. After a prior corroboration between various well-known absorbed dose values and their corresponding $I_{RGB}$ values, a calibration function is obtained. By using this calibration function, an "unknown" up-taken dose value can be determined.

  • The microstructural transitions of aqueous micellar solutions of cetyltrime-thylammonium bromide and sodiumdodecyl sulfate by adding 1-hexanol were investigated, measuring the concentrations of equilibrated phases and the electrical conductivities at the low concentrations of surfactants, where the solobilities of 1-hexanol varied significantly, at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 45$^{\circ}C$. Ternary phase diagrams of multiphase regions, constructed by liquid chromatography analysis and by counting the number of phase of samples, consisted of one three-phase region and three two-phase regions. One of the two-phase regions was found to equilibrate an aqueous micellar solution and a liquid crystal, and had a critical point between them. Near this region, the solubility curve varied abruptly, and the isotropic solution turned birefrigent. The conductivities of the single phase regions above the critical point increased up to a certain point as 1-hexanol added, and then decreased, representing the microstructural transition at the supercritical region. Further, the solubility of 1-hexanol in aqueous micellar solution was found to increase as temperature and the number of hydrophilelipophile balance of surfactants increase.

Spray characteristics of misaligned impinging injectors

  • The variances of atomization characteristics with the misalignment of injectors defined as the fraction of skewness for various angles of impingement and pressure conditions were studied using the doublet impinging injectors with a like-on-like arrangement. Water was used as simulant and the spray characteristics along with the changes in the skewness were analyzed using the methods of spray image photography. Experiment was carried for the impinging nozzles of orifice diameter of 1.2 mm within Reynolds numbers ranging from $9{\times}10^3-4.5{\times}10^4$ and the fraction of skewness considered for the experiment ranges from 0.0 to 0.9 at ambient temperature condition. Flat sheet with a distinct rim produced perpendicular to the plane of impinging jets goes ondisappear and sheet appears comparatively shorterwith the increase in fraction of skewness resulting the atomization of fluid droplet very close to impingement point with decrease in breakup length and increase in spray angle up to certain extent. The maximum allowable skewness was found as the result. The skewness up to the certain extent can be considered as the parameter to control the atomization characteristics of simulant inside the combustion chamberproviding the high economic performance of fuel and time.

Performance Analysis of Dynamic Spectrum Allocation in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

  • Increasing convergence among heterogeneous radio networks is expected to be a key feature of future ubiquitous services. The convergence of radio networks in combination with dynamic spectrum allocation (DSA) could be a beneficial means to solve the growing demand for radio spectrum. DSA might enhance the spectrum utilization of involved radio networks to comply with user requirements for high-quality multimedia services. This paper proposes a simple spectrum allocation algorithm and presents an analytical model of dynamic spectrum resource allocation between two networks using a 4-D Markov chain. We argue that there may exist a break-even point for choosing whether or not to adopt DSA in a system. We point out certain circumstances where DSA is not a viable alternative. We also discuss the performance of DSA against the degree of resource sharing using the proposed analytical model and simulations. The presented analytical model is not restricted to DSA, and can be applied to a general resource sharing study.

Harmonics Elimination in a Multilevel Inverter with Unequal DC Sources Using a Genetic Algorithm

  • In this paper, an optimal solution to the harmonic reduction problem in a cascaded multilevel inverter with non-equal DC sources using a genetic algorithm (GA) is presented. Switching angles are generated for different values of modulation index by the proposed algorithm, considering minimum voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) whereas selected harmonics are controlled within the allowable limits at all desired modulation indices including the point of discontinuity. Results are stored as a look-up table to be used to control the inverter for a certain operating point. The computed angles are used in a simulated circuit in Matlab\Simulink to validate the results.
