This study has been focused on application of ELID mirror-surface grinding technology for manufacturing single crystal optic sapphire. Single crystal sapphire is a superior material with optic properties of high performance as light transmission, thermal conductivity, hardness and so on. Mirror-surface machining technology is necessary to use sapphire as optic parts. The ELID grinding system has been set up for machining of the sapphire material. According to the ELID experimental results, it shows that the surface of sapphire can be eliminated by metal bonded wheel with micron abrasives and the surface roughness of 60nmRa can be gotten using grinding wheel of 2,000 mesh in 4.5um, depth of cut. In this study, the chemical experiments after ELID grinding also has been conducted to check chemical reaction between workpiece and grinding wheel on ELID grinding process. It shows that the chemical reaction has not happened as the results of the chemical experiments.
In this paper, the influence of the table speed, metal removal rate and grinding fluid on long wheel workpiece contact zone at high effect grinding was investigated by theoretical analyses and measuring the temperature, and discussed by the temperature distribution in grinding surface layer. Main results obtained are as follows, 1) Rega.dless of the table speed, the temperature gap of the workpiece(heat influx) is about 6-8 times as high in dry condition as in wet condition. 2) Good grinding condition can be obtained owing to the effect of grinding fluid without any burning defect under the condition of the metal removal rate(1.0mm$^3$/mm.s) in case of wet grinding. 3) When the depth from the surface layer is about 1.25-1.5mm under the condition of the slow table speed, surface temperature goes up higher as the table speed slows down, because long contact time is laked at the surface layer. 4) In case of the same metal removal rate, the lower the table speed becomes, the higher the surface temperature is, because grinding depth has a far more influence on wheel workpiece contact zone than the table speed.
Recently sapphire wafer has expected as smart phone cover material, however, brittle nature of sapphire needed edge grinding processes to prevent early initiation of cracks. Electro-deposited multi-layered groove tools with $35{\mu}m$ diamond particles were studied for sapphire wafer grinding. Solid particle flow behaviors in agitated electrolyte was studied using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry), and uniform particle distribution in Ni bond were obtained when agitating impeller was located lower part of electrolyte. Hardness values of $400{\pm}50Hv$ were maintained for retention of diamond particles in electro-deposited bond layer. Sapphire wafer edge grinding test was carried out and multi-layered $160{\mu}m$ thick diamond tool showed much greater grinding capabilities up to 2000 sapphire wafers than single-layered $50{\mu}m$ thick diamond electro-deposited tools of 420 wafers. The reason why 3 times thicker multi-layered tools than single-layered tools showed 5 times longer tool lives in grinding processes was attributed to self-dressed new diamond particles in multi-layered tools, and multi-layered diamond tools could be promising for sapphire grinding.

In these days, according to increasing the technical development, the dimension of a product goes up for ultra-precision. For the net shape manufacturing, grinding is a important process that influences directly the accuracy and the integrity of produced products. In this study, an experimental evaluation was carried out. Workpiece materials were used STD11, SUS304, and STB2 in accordance with varing condition of feedrate and depth of cut. From measuring the grinding force and the surface roughness, material characteristics of grinding by using CBN wheel were examined.

In this study, we aims to develop the machining technology for the ultra precision surface and profile accuracy. For this purpose, we construct the electrolytic in process grinding system (ELID grinding) and apply to the cylindrical and internal grinding. Through the various machining experiments such as SCM steel., ceramics, tungsten carbide etc., we have obtained nanometer surface roughness. And we have applied this mirror grinding technique to hydraulic manual valve and mold core of mini disk optical pick-up base. For the development of fine mechanical part machining technology, e have made multi fiber optical connector using fine grinding technology. And constructed micro drilling system with process monitoring system which is possible to drill 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter hole.

Recently, manufacturing work been transformed to small acale production from with various items to act up to user's expectation from mass production with a little items required in the past. The FMS using NC type mother machinaries has been applied actively also in domestic manufacturing line to meet thus tendancy, but there are many machining troubles occured in work process not be settled yet. Nowdays high efficiency has been required no less than high precision in grinding work for the improvement of productivity. In this study, to represent more advanced FMS can be adapted to thus situation In-process type monitoring method using AE and Current sensors is suggested to investigatethe machining condition in grinding process. As results from this experimental study, is is recoqnized well that grinding conditions and dressing point of in time can be estimated effectively using monitoring method suggested. Furthermore, surface shape of grinding wheel on voluntary point of in time can be predicted indirectly through the observation and comparison of AE signal waveform obtained as performance of continuous dressing work.
The present work describes the effect of dry grinding of a mixture composed of $Y_2O_3$, $BaCO_3$ and CuO powders with a planetary ball mill before heat treatment on crystal structure and superconductivity in the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$. The specific surface area of the ground product of mixture decreased with an increase in the grinding time, after showing an upward trend up to 60 minutes of grinding. The critical current density, which was influenced by the grinding time of mixture, indicates the maximum value of about $150A/cm^2$ in the case of 60 minutes grinding, while the critical temperature, which were around 90K, for the sintered bodies were almost independent of the grinding time.

This report deals with a feeding system of the Coaxal grinding machine, processing optical ferrule. This report also examines the applicability of using the feeding system for the Coaxial grinding machine, by mean of conducting performance estimation. The results are as follow; Repeatability of regulating wheel is $17{\mu}m$, R/W rotation accuracy is between $30\;\~\;40{\mu}m$. This means 'Rotation accuracy' is lower than the concentricity level. Backlash generation level at the feeding system of the grinding wheel is under $1{\mu}m$, thereby positioning accuracy is controlled within $2{\mu}m$ In terms of repeatability, you can find occasional error at the returning process from the starting point. This error is resulted from the measurement tolerance of the starting point sensor. We will get the repeatability level under control by $1{\mu}m$, through improving the soft-ware used and up-grading the sensor at the starting point.

Rapid prototyping (RP) technology can fabricate any 3D physical model regardless of geometric complexity using the layered manufacturing (LM) process. Stereolithography (SL) is the best-known example of RP technology. In general, the surface quality of a raw SL-generated part is unsatisfactory for industrial purposes due to the step artefact created by the LM process. Despite of the increased number of applications for SL parts, this side effect limits their uses. In order to improve their surface quality, additional post-machining finishing, such as traditional grinding, is required, but post-machining is time consuming and can reduce the geometric accuracy of a part. Therefore, this study proposes a post-machining technology combining coating and grinding processes to improve the surface quality of SL parts. Paraffin wax and pulp are used as the coating and grinding materials. By grinding the coating wax only up to the boundary of the part, the surface smoothness can be improved without damaging the surface. Finally, moulding and casting experiments were performed to confirm the suitability of the SL parts finished using the proposed process with rapid tooling (RT) techniques.
