  • The residential fuel cell system was modeled as a box-shaped chamber with vent openings, filled with various components such as reformer, desulfurizer, fuel cell stack and humidifier. When the vent openings are 1% of the total surface and hydrogen leakage 1%, hydrogen concentration is around 0.1% higher than the other regions from leak points in the chamber at 30 seconds and hydrogen concentration is increased from 0.3% to 0.7% in the upper region of the system after 200 seconds. When the vent openings are 1% of the total surface and hydrogen leakage 1%, 3%, 5%, the steady state result of CFD, 5% of hydrogen leakage is reached the lowest ignition limit in the system. When the vent openings are 2% of the total surface and hydrogen leakage 1%, hydrogen concentration is increased in the bottom of the system for 60 seconds. After 250 seconds, hydrogen concentration is reached the steady state in the system. As the vent opening of the total surface increased from 1% to 2%, averaged hydrogen mole fraction is under 1% in the system, however, upper regions of the system from the hydrogen leakage points are shown over 1% of hydrogen mole fraction.

  • Heat transfer model and energy dissipation rate were investigated to examine the heat transfer mechanism in bubble columns with continuous operation. The energy dissipation rate($E_D$) obtained from the unsteady state heat transfer model based on the surface renewal theory was significantly small, comparing with the hydrodynamic energy dissipation rate($P_v$) calculated from the overall hydrodynamic energy balance based on the behaviors and holdups of gas and liquid phases in the column. It was found from these results that the energy dissipation rate based on the surface renewal theory is independent of the hydrodynamic energy dissipation rate obtained from the overall hydrodynamic energy balance in the bubble column, in considering their mechanism. The different two energy dissipation rates were correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions, respectively.

  • In this study, daily based groundwater recharge was estimated under unsteady state by using groundwater table fluctuation model developed by Kim et al. (2013). This technique analyzes groundwater variation characteristics by using reaction factor related with groundwater flow and specific yield related with recharge. For the application of this model, measured groundwater level at JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang for 5 years were used. This model can estimate daily based groundwater recharge and the computed groundwater levels showed good agreement with measured groundwater levels. At JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang, the estimated recharges (rates) were 520.4~904.0mm (32.7~61.8%) and 447.4~633.4mm (24.0~45.1%), respectively. The developed model can be suggested as an efficient and precise method to estimate daily based groundwater recharge by using groundwater level data.

  • The safety of road vehicles on the ground in crosswind has been investigated for many years. One of the most important fundamentals in the safety analysis is aerodynamic characteristics of a vehicle in crosswind. The most common way to study the aerodynamic characteristics of a vehicle in crosswind is wind tunnel tests to measure the aerodynamic coefficients and/or pressure coefficients of the vehicle. Due to the complexity of wind tunnel test equipment and procedure, the features of flow field around the vehicle are seldom explored in a wind tunnel, particularly for the vehicle moving on the ground. As a complementary to wind tunnel tests, the numerical method using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be employed as an effective tool to explore the aerodynamic characteristics of as well as flow features around the vehicle. This study explores crosswind effects on a high-sided lorry on the ground with and without movement through CFD simulations together with wind tunnel tests. Firstly, the aerodynamic forces on a stationary lorry model are measured in a wind tunnel, and the results are compared with the previous measurement results. The CFD with unsteady RANS method is then employed to simulate wind flow around and wind pressures on the stationary lorry. The numerical aerodynamic forces are compared with the wind tunnel test results. Furthermore, the same CFD method is extended to investigate the moving vehicle on the ground in crosswind. The results show that the CFD results match with wind tunnel test results and the current way using aerodynamic coefficients from a stationary vehicle in crosswind is acceptable. The CFD simulation can provide more insights on flow field and pressure distribution which are difficult to be obtained by wind tunnel tests.

  • In recent, according to the tightening of environment regulation policy, the height of the site of the power plant is increased and the length of the cooling water pipe is increased. This has a serious impact on the stability of the plant. This study analyzes the transient phenomenon using LIQT 7.2, an unsteady state one-dimensional analysis software, to secure the stability of 1,000 MW high-capacity coal-fired power plant cooling water system with high head. To prevent water hammer, The effects on performance characteristics were predicted by individual and combination application. The surge pressure of the cooling water which occurs when the pump was stopped without installing the anti-surge devices was the largest at the pump outlet side. The most effective and simple way to reduce surge pressure in these cooling water systems is to combine a vacuum breaker with a hydraulic non-return valve, which is an essential device for pump protection.

  • The cooling characteristic of water-air mixed spray for high water mass flux is not well defined, compared to that of highly pressurized spray. A series of research program was planned to develop the boiling correlation for whole temperature range in case of water-air mixed spray with high water mass flux. The cooling experiments of hot steel surface with initial temperature of 820$^{\circ}C$ were conducted in unsteady state with relatively high water mass flux. A computer program was developed to calculate the heat flux inversely from measured data by three inserted thermocouples. Finally the effects of water and air mass flux on the averaged film boiling heat flux and wetting temperature were studied. In this 1st report, it is found that the boiling curve was similar to that of highly pressurized spray and the decreased slope of heat flux in film boiling region with respect to surface temperature became steep by increasing air mass flux. Also it is shown that, by increasing air mass flux, the averaged heat flux in film boiling region was increased, and then saturated and the wetting temperature was increased, and then decreased. Finally when the heat flux in film boiling region is compared with that of highly pressurized spray, it is known that the cooling is improved by introducing air up to 60%.

  • Dynamic Stall is a flow phenomenon which occurs on the retreating side of helicopter rotor blades during forward flight. It also occurs on blades of stall regulated wind turbines under yawing conditions as well as during gust loads. Time scales occurring during this process are comparable on both helicopter and wind turbine blades. Dynamic Stall limits the speed of the helicopter and its manoeuvrability and limits the amount of power production of wind turbines. Extensive numerical as well as experimental investigations have been carried out recently to get detailed insight into the very complex flow structures of the Dynamic Stall process. Numerical codes have to be based on the full equations, i.e. the Navier-Stokes equations to cover the scope of the problems involved: Time dependent flow, unsteady flow separation, vortex development and shedding, compressibility effects, turbulence, transition and 3D-effects, etc. have to be taken into account. In addition to the numerical treatment of the Dynamic Stall problem suitable wind tunnel experiments are inevitable. Comparisons of experimental data with calculated results show us the state of the art and validity of the CFD-codes and the necessity to further improve calculation procedures. In the present paper the phenomenon of Dynamic Stall will be discussed first. This discussion is followed by comparisons of some recently obtained experimental and numerical results for an oscillating helicopter airfoil under Dynamic Stall conditions. From the knowledge base of the Dynamic Stall Problems, the next step can be envisaged: to control Dynamic Stall. The present discussion will address two different Dynamic Stall control methodologies: the Nose-Droop concept and the application of Leading Edge Vortex Generators (LEVoG's) as examples of active and passive control devices. It will be shown that experimental results are available but CFD-data are only of limited comparison. A lot of future work has to be done in CFD-code development to fill this gap. Here mainly 3D-effects as well as improvements of both turbulence and transition modelling are of major concern.

  • In this paper the solidification phenomena at the molten pool has been modeled and simulated in terms with the one dimensional unsteady-state heat transfer of the solid and molten phase and the pressure distribution in the solid phase for the twin-roller continuous casting of Sn-15% Pb. The further purpose of this study was to effectively analyze the thermal and mechanical deformation of roll applying the results of the heat transfer and the pressure distribution to the boundary conditions. The strip thickness of rapidly solidified metallic strip decreases with increasing angular velocity of the roller and with increasing initial roll gap. For this reason the roll spacing and angular velocity of the rolls are considered to be main variables. The recommended optimal casting regimes for continuous strip dimensions is near 0.8mm-1.0mm in thickness at the given angular velocity .omega.=2.0 rad/sec. Results of the experiment using Sn-15% Pb are compared with model predictions. The calculated roll deformation has been in good agreement with the observed value of roll deformatiion. All the deformation. All the deformation of the roller is within the elastic range, the plastic yielding are not occured. However, these elastic stresses are sufficient to take place of the shortened roller life by the thermal fatigue and a notch fatigue. The higher cooling rates were obtained by a twin-roller quenching technique. Also the quenched microstructure of the rapidly solidified shell was verified.

  • Heat regenerator occupied by regenerative materials improves thermal efficiency of regenerative combustion system through the recovery of heat of exhaust gaset. By using one-dimensional two-phase fluid dynamics model, the unsteady thermal flow of heat regenerator with spherical particles, was numerically simulated to evaluate the heat transfer and pressure drop and thereby to suggest the parameter for designing heat regenerator. It takes about 7 hours for the steady state of the flow field in regenerator, in which heat absorption of regenerative particle is concurrent with the same magnitude of heat desorption. The regenerative particle experiences small temperature fluctuation below 10 K during the reversing process. The performance of thermal flow in heat regenerator varies with inlet velocity of exhaust gas and air, configuration of regenerator (cross-sectional area and length) and diameter of regenerative particle. As the gas velocity increases, the heat transfer between gas and particle enhances and with the increase the pressure losses. As particle diameter decreases, the air is preheated higher and the exhaust gases are cooled more with the increase of pressure losses.

  • We present basic data for developing new research topics and closely examine the existing data on the development and organization of the Nakdong River Estuary Delta by analyzing various studies of the area, including ocean engineering, coastal engineering, ocean environmental engineering, geomorphological, and geological studies. We first defined the general concepts related to the estuary and delta and reviewed the historical development of the Nakdong River Estuary Delta over the past 100 years. We then examined the origin and core elements of the estuary deposits that constitute the delta. In addition, we scrutinized the main factors affecting the development of the delta and analyzed existing research on delta development mechanisms by core researchers. The construction of an estuary barrage is one of the main factors effecting estuarine circulation and has altered the physical oceanic environment, area of deposition, atmospheric environment, and vegetation community of the delta. These factors affect the estuary circulation in turn, altering the delta. Along the Nakdong River, an unsteady-state sandy barrier appears at approximately three times the distance of the wavelength of incident offshore waves, and this terrain forms approximately 10-15 years after reclamation in the interdistributary upper stream and transforms the shoreline. It is necessary to develop a technique to predict terrain change that reproduces the erosion and accumulation of estuarine deposits. To determine the parameters and variables necessary to reproduce this system, continuous on-site monitoring is necessary. The existing research did not fully examine the terrain changes in Nakdong River Estuary or the periodic developmental characteristics. To understand the future process of estuary delta development, it is necessary to establish an integrated management system.
