Analysis of Unsteady Cavitating Flows in Fuel Injection Nozzle of Piezo-driven Injector by Eulerian-Lagrangian Multi-phase Method (Eulerian-Lagrangian 다상 유동해석법에 의한 피에조 인젝터의 노즐 내부 비정상 캐비테이션 유동해석)

  • This study describes the analysis results of unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle of the prototype piezo-driven injector. This piezo-driven injector has been recognised as one of the next generation diesel injector due to a higher driven efficiency than the conventional solenoid-driven injector. The three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. We could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle

Modified Split Panel Method Applied to the Analysis of Cavitating Propellers

  • A low-order potential based boundary element method is applied to the prediction of the flow around the cavitating propeller in steady or in unsteady inflow. For given cavitation number, the cavity shape is determined in an iterative manner until the kinematic and the dynamic boundary conditions are both satisfied on the approximate cavity boundary. In order to improve the solution behavior near the tip region, a hyperboloidal panel geometry and a modified split panel method are applied. The method is then extended to include the analysis of time-varying cavitating flows around the propeller blades via a time-step algorithm in time domain. In the method, the steady state oscillatory solution is obtained by incremental stepping in the itme domain. Finally, the present method is validated through comparison with other numerical results and experimental data.

  • The injection nozzle of an electro-hydraulic injector is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the effects of needle movement in a piezo-driven injector on unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle were investigated by cavitation numerical model based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Aimed at simulating the 3-D two-phase flow behavior, the three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole with real design data of a piezo-driven diesel injector has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model.   • A numerical approach based on a potential flow method is developed to simulate the unsteady interaction between propeller and rudder. In this approach, a panel method is used to solve the flow around the rudder and a vortex lattice method is used to solve the flow around the propeller, respectively. An iterative procedure is adopted to solve the interaction between propeller and rudder. The effects of one component on the other are evaluated by using induced velocities due to the other component at every time step. A fully unsteady wake alignment algorithm is implemented into the vortex lattice method to simulate the unsteady propeller flow. The Rosenhead-Moore core model is employed during the wake alignment procedure to avoid the singularities and instability. The Lamb-Oseen vortex model is adopted in the present method to decay the vortex strength around the rudder and to eliminate unrealistically high induced velocity. The present methods are applied to predict the performance of a cavitating horn-type rudder in the presence of a 6-bladed propeller. The predicted cavity patterns compare well with those observed from the experiments.

  • The transfer matrix and unsteady cavitation characteristics, cavitation compliance and mass flow gain factor, of cavitating inducer were evaluated by CFD using commercial software. Quasi-steady values of cavitation compliance and mass flow gain factor were obtained first by using steady calculations at various flow rate and inlet cavitation number. Then unsteady calculations were made to determine the transfer matrix and the cavitation characteristics. The results are compared with experiments to show the validity of calculations.

  • The cavitation erosion remains an industrial issue for many applications. This paper deals with the cavitation intensity, which can be described as the fluid mechanical loading leading to cavitation damage. The estimation of this quantity is a challenging problem both in terms of modeling the cavitating flow and predicting the erosion due to cavitation. For this purpose, a numerical methodology was proposed to estimate cavitation intensity from 3D unsteady cavitating flow simulations. CFD calculations were carried out using Code_Saturne, which enables U-RANS equations resolution for a homogeneous fluid mixture using the Merkle's model, coupled to a $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with the Reboud's correction. A post-process cavitation intensity prediction model was developed based on pressure and void fraction derivatives. This model is applied on a flow around a hydrofoil using different physical (inlet velocities) and numerical (meshes and time steps) parameters. The article presents the cavitation intensity model as well as the comparison of this model with experimental results. The numerical predictions of cavitation damage are in good agreement with experimental results obtained by pitting test.

CFD Analysis of Cavitation Phenomena in Mixed-Flow Pump

  • This paper deals with the CFD analysis of cavitating flow in the mixed-flow pump with the specific speed of 1.64 which suffers from a high level of noise and vibrations close to the optimal flow coefficient. The ANSYS CFX package has been used to solve URANS equations together with the Rayleigh-Plesset model and the SST-SAS turbulence model has been employed to capture highly unsteady phenomena inside the pump. The CFD analysis has provided a good picture of the cavitation structures inside the pump and their dynamics for a wide range of flow coefficients and NPSH values. Cavitation instabilities were detected at 70% of the optimal flow coefficient close to the NPSH3 value (NPSH3 is the net positive suction head required for the 3% drop of the total head of the pump).

  • A numerical analysis of steady/unsteady flow applying cavitation model and moving mesh method was carried out in order to analyze flow and response characteristics inside the pilot valve which controls the flight actuator system. The flow of the valve was assessed according to operation temperature and time. This research has found that valve characteristics became stable at above a specific temperature and the cavitation affected valve's performance. Internal pressure and response characteristics of the valve were analyzed and flow characteristics of steady and developed unsteady flow were confirmed to be matched each other.

  • The swirling flow in the draft tube of a Francis turbine can cause the flow instability and the cavitation surge and has a larger influence on hydraulic power operating system. In this paper, the cavitating flow with swirling flow in the diffuser was studied by the draft tube component experiment, the model Francis turbine experiment and the numerical simulation. In the component experiment, several types of fluctuations were observed, including the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour by the swirling flow. While the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour were suppressed by the aeration into the diffuser, the loss coefficient in the diffuser increased by the aeration. In the model turbine test the aeration decreased the efficiency of the model turbine by several percent. In the numerical simulation, the cavitating flow was studied using Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS) with particular emphasis on understanding the unsteady characteristics of the vortex rope structure. The generation and evolution of the vortex rope structures have been investigated throughout the diffuser using the iso-surface of vapor volume fraction. The pressure fluctuation in the diffuser by numerical simulation confirmed the cavitation surge observed in the experiment. Finally, this pressure fluctuation of the cavitation surge was examined and interpreted by CFD.

  • Characteristics of steady and unsteady cavitation in a turbopump inducer were investigated in this paper. To see the effect of tip clearance on the inducer performance, three cases of tip clearance were tested. The helical inducer, which has two blades with inlet tip blade angle of 7.8 degree and tip solidity of 2.7, was tested in the water. In the non-cavitating condition, the inducer head decreased with increase in the tip clearance. Rotating cavitation and cavitation surge were observed through unsteady pressure measurements at the inducer inlet. The cell number and propagation speed of the rotating cavitation were determined through cross-correlation analysis. During the rotating cavitation one cell rotated at the same rotational speed as that of the inducer rotation and the cavitation surge did not rotate. The critical cavitation number increased with increase in the tip clearance at the same flow rate, but the change of critical cavitation number was small at the nominal flow rate.
