The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of hydraulic behavior of the natural channel flow according to the temporal classification mode, and thus propose the hydraulic analysis method for future channel design. For analysis, the temporal flow characteristics of the channel section was divided into the steady flow and the unsteady flow. For hydraulic analysis, the HEC-RAS model, which is a one-dimensional numerical analysis model, and the SMS-RAM2 model, which is a two-dimensional model, were used and the factors used for analysis of hydraulic characteristics were flood elevation and flow rate. The flow state was analyzed on the basis of the one-dimensional steady flow and unsteady flow for review. In the unsteady flow analysis the flow rate changed by $(-)0.16%{\sim}(+)0.26%$, and the flood elevation varied by $(-)0.35%{\sim}(+)0.51%$ as compared to the values in the steady flow analysis. Given these results, in the one-dimensional flow analysis based on the unsteady flow the flood elevation and flow rate were greater than when the analysis was done on the basis of the steady flow. The flow state was analyzed on the basis of the two-dimensional steady flow and unsteady flow. In the unsteady flow analysis the flow rate varied by $(-)0.16%{\sim}(+)1.08%$, and the flood elevation changed by $(-)0.24%{\sim}(+)0.41%$ as compared to the values in the steady flow analysis. Given these analysis results, in the two dimensional flow analysis based on the unsteady flow, the flood elevation and flow rate were greater than when the analysis was done on the basis of the steady flow.
In the present study, a numerical simulation is performed for the flow through a cooling fan. The computation was performed by using commercial code, STAR-CD. A rotating fan was simulated by rotational motions using MRF (Multiple Rotating Reference Frame) in a steady-state analysis and sliding interface (rotating meshes) in an unsteady-state analysis. The results of numerical computation were in good agreement with experimental data. In order to calculate the acoustic signal, the unsteady flow-field was firstly calculated. The acoustics of the fan is calculated by using acoustic analogy based on the unsteady flow-field. The predicted acoustic signal shows the characteristics of the uneven bladed-fan.
A numerical analysis of initial unsteady state flow and heat transfer in an enclosed cavity has been performed by the Modified QUICK Scheme. The stable QUICK Scheme which modified the coefficient always to be positive is included in this numerical analysis. The implicit method is applied to solve the unsteady state flow; between iterations the PISO (Pressure - Implicit with Splitting of Operators) algorithm is employed to correct and update the velocity and pressure fields on a staggered grid. The accuracy of the Modified QUICK Scheme is proved by applying fewer grid systems than those which Ghia et al. and Davis applied. The initial unsteady mixed convection in an enclosed cavity is analyzed using the above numerical procedure. This study focuses on the development of the large main vortex and secondary vortex in forced convection, the effects of the Rayleigh Number in natural convection and the relative direction of the forced and natural convection.
A theoretical study of three-dimensional unsteady compressible non-reacting flow inside double flow of monolith catalytic converter system attached to 6-cylinder engine was performed for the achievement of performance improvement, reduction of light-off time, and longer service life by improving the flow distribution of pulsating exhaust gases. The differences between unsteady and steady-state flow were evaluated through the numerical computations. To obtains the boundary conditions to a numerical analysis, one dimensional non-steady gas dynamic calculation was also performed by using the method of characteristics in intake and exhaust system. Studies indicate that unsteady representation is necessary because pulsation of gas velocity may affect gas flow uniformity within the monolith. The simulation results also show that the level of flow maldistribution in the monolith heavily depends on curvature and angles of separation streamline of mixing pipe that homogenizes the exhaust gas from individual cylinders. It is also found that on dual flow converter systems, there is severe interactions of each pulsating exhaust gas flow and the length of mixing pipe and junction geometry influence greatly on the degree of flow distribution.
An accelerating flow field through a compressor cascade is studied numerically by unsteady computational simulation. The two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flow is used for the study of unsteady high incidence angle flow, with preconditioning scheme to cover the wide range of Mach number and $\kappa-\omega$ model for the turbulent viscous flow analysis. A DCA(double circular arc) compressor blade is accelerated artificially in this study to understand the unsteady effect by comparing the present results with the existing steady-state experimental and computational results. Also, the accelerating flow field during the starting phase of gas turbine is studied with actual experimental data for the understanding of flow field and performance characteristics at off-design condition.

Steady state computations are routinely used by design engineers to evaluate and compare losses in hydraulic components. In the case of the draft tube diffuser, however, experiments have shown that while a significant number of operating conditions can adequately be evaluated using steady state computations, a few operating conditions require unsteady simulations to accurately evaluate losses. This paper presents a study that assesses the predictive capacity of a combination of steady and unsteady RANS numerical computations to predict draft tube losses over the complete range of operation of a Francis turbine. For the prediction of the draft tube performance using k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, a methodology has been proposed to average global performance indicators of steady flow computations such as the pressure recovery factor over an adequate number of periods to obtain correct results. The methodology will be validated using two distinct flow solvers, CFX and OpenFOAM, and through a systematic comparison with experimental results obtained on the FLINDT model draft tube.
Natural convection from a slightly inclined circular cylinders immersed in quiescent cold pure water was studied experimentally. The experiment was carried out for circular cylinders with uniform heat flux ranging from $100W/m^{2} to 800 W/m^{2}$ and inclined angle ranging from horizontal $({\phi}=0^{\circ}) to 15^{\circ}$. The flow fields around cylinder were visualized and heat transfer characteristics investigated by measuring the surface temperatures for each case. As the results, it is shown that flow patterns are changed consecutively through the sequence of steady state downflow, unsteady state flow and steady state upflow with increasing heat flux. At the same inclined angle, as heat flux increases, the average Nusselt number decreases and then increases. At the same heat flux, as inclined angle increases, the average Nusselt number decreases.
In a gasoline engine, the characteristics of air flow is very important not only for the design of the intake system geometry bout also for the accurate measurement of the induction air mass. In this study, an air flow rate measurement of the induction air mass. In this study, an air flow rate measurement was conducted by using the hot wire flow meter at the upstream of the intake port and the throttle. At the upstream of the throttle, the overshoot phenomena of the air flow rate by fast throttle opening were analyzed with choked flow. At the upstream of the intake port, the cylinder variation of the air flow rate and the difference between fast throttle opening and closing were showed during the unsteady state by the throttle step change. The results of this study can be used for the design of the throttle valve geometry and cylinder by cylinder control.

Numerical solution of the full Navier-Stokes equation as well as the energy equation has been obtained for the unsteady natural convection in a rectangular enclosure. One side wall was maintained at very high temperature simulating fires. Especially the effect of surface radiation was taken into account. While the enclosed air was assumed to be transparent, the internal walls directly interacted one another through the surface radiation. Due to a significant temperature difference in the flow field, the equation of state was used instead of the Boussinesq approximation. It was found that the rapid heating of the adiabatic ceiling and floor by the incoming radiation from the hot wall made the evolution at thermo-fluid field highly unstable in the initial period. Therefore, the secondary cells brought about at the floor region greatly affected the heat transfer mechanism inside the enclosure. The heat transfer rate was augmented by the radiation, resulting in requiring less time for the flow to reach the steady state. At the steady state neglecting radiation two internal hydraulic jumps were clearly observed in upper/left as well as in lower/right comer. However, the hydraulic jump in the lower/right comer could not be observed for the case including radiation due to its high momentum flow over the bottom wall. Radiation resulted in a faster establishment of the steady state phenomena.
The important problems that arise in the design and performance of the axial flow turbine are the prediction and control of secondary flows. Some progresses have been made on understanding flow conditions that occur when the inlet endwall boundary layer separates at the point in the endwall and rolls up into the horseshoe vortex. And the flows though an axial turbine tend to be extremely complex due to its inherent unsteady and viscous phenomena. The passing wakes generated from the trailing edge of the stator make an interaction with the rotor. Unsteady flow should be considered rotor/stator interactions. The main purpose of this research is control of secondary flow and improvement efficiency in turbine by leading edge modification in unsteady state. When the wake from the stator ran into the modified leading edge of the rotor, the leading edge generated the weak pressure fluctuation by complex passage flows. In conclusion, leading edge modification(bulb2) results in the reduced total pressure loss in the flow field.
