In this research, the surface roughness affecting the pressure drop in a pipe used as the steam generator of a PWR was studied. Based on the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique using a commercial code named ANSYS-FLUENT, a straight pipe was modeled to obtain the Darcy frictional coefficient, changed with a range of various surface roughness ratios as well as Reynolds numbers. The result is validated by the comparison with a Moody chart to set the appropriate size of grids at the wall for the correct consideration of surface roughness. The pressure drop in a full-scale U-shaped pipe is measured with the same code, correlated with the surface roughness ratio. In the next stage, we studied a reduced scale model of a U-shaped heat pipe with experiment and analysis of the investigation into fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The material of the pipe was cut from the real heat pipe of a material named Inconel 690 alloy, now used in steam generators. The accelerations at the fixed stations on the outer surface of the pipe model are measured in the series of time history, and Fourier transformed to the frequency domain. The natural frequency of three leading modes were traced from the FFT data, and compared with the result of a numerical analysis for unsteady, incompressible flow. The corresponding mode shapes and maximum displacement are obtained numerically from the FSI simulation with the coupling of the commercial codes, ANSYS-FLUENT and TRANSIENT_STRUCTURAL. The primary frequencies for the model system consist of three parts: structural vibration, BPF(blade pass frequency) of pump, and fluid-structure interaction.

Heat regenerator occupied by regenerative materials improves thermal efficiency of combustion system through the recovery of sensible heat of exhaust gases. By using one-dimensional two-phase fluid dynamics model, the unsteady thermal flow of regenerator with spherical particles, was numerically analyzed to evaluate the heat transfer and pressure losses and to derive the design parameter for heat regenerator. It is confirmed that the computational results, such as air preheat temperature, exhausted gases outlet temperature, and pressure losses, agreed well with the experimental data. The thermal flow in heat regenerator varies with porosity, configuration of regenerator and diameter of regenerative particle. As the gas velocity increases with decreasing the cross-sectional area of the regenerator, the heat transfer between gas and particle enhances and pressure losses decrease. As particle diameter decreases, the air is preheated higher and the exhaust gases are cooled lower with the increase of pressure losses. Assuming a given exhaust gases temperature at the regenerator outlet, the regenerator need to be linearly lengthened with inlet Reynolds number of exhaust gases, which is defined as a regenerator design parameter.

A parallelized FEM code based on domain decomposition method has been recently developed for large-scale computational fluid dynamics. A 4-step splitting finite element algorithm is adopted for unsteady flow computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, and Smagorinsky LES model is chosen for turbulent flow computation. Both METIS and MPI Libraries are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors, respectively. Tiburon model of Hyundai Motor Company is chosen as the computational model at Re=7.5 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ , which is based on the car height. The calculation is carried out under both the wind tunnel condition and the road condition using IBM SP parallel architecture at KISTI Super Computing Center. Compared with the existing experimental data, both the velocity and pressure fields are predicted reasonably well and the drag coefficient is in good agreement. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the drag under the road condition is smaller than that under the wind-tunnel condition.

The vacuum cleaner motor runs at very high speed for suction power. Specially, motor power is provided by the impeller being rotated at very high speed. The centrifugal fan consists of the impeller, the diffuser, and the circular casing. Due to the high rotating speed of the impeller and small gap distance between the impeller and the diffuser, the level of noise in the centrifugal fan is at BPF(Blade Passage Frequency) and its harmonic frequencies. In order to calculate the sound pressure of centrifugal fan, unsteady flow data are needed. The cause of noise is obtained by dividing the fluid noise by exhaust flow of fan and vibration noise by rotational vibration of vacuum cleaner fan motor. Until now, an accelerometer has been used to measure vibration. However, it can not measure vibration in some parts of brush and commutator because of motor construction and 3-D vibrating mode. This study was conducted to perform accurate analysis of vibration and aerodynamic sound for fan motor in a vacuum cleaner using a laser vibration analyzer. A silent fan motor can be designed using the data measured in this study.
An important goal of computational wind engineering is to impact the design process with simulations of flow around buildings and bridges. One challenging aspect of this goal is to solve the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations accurately. For the unsteady computations, an adaptive finite element technique may reduce the computer time and storage. The preliminary application of a p-version as well as an h-version adaptive technique to computational wind engineering has been reported in previous paper. The details on the implementation of p-adaptive technique will be discussed in this paper. In this technique, two posteriori error estimations, which are based on the velocity and vorticity, are first presented. Then, the polynomial order of the interpolation function is increased continuously element by element until the estimated error is less than the accepted. The second through sixth orders of hierarchical functions are used as the interpolation polynomials. Unequal order interpolations are used for velocity and pressure. Using the flow around a circular cylinder with Reynolds number of 1000 the two error estimators are compared. The result show that the estimated error based on the velocity is lower than that based on the vorticity.

We have simulated the performance of a simple engine model with a gas turbine engine simulation program based on CFD. 2-dimensional Navier-Stokes code for the viscous flow was applied to simulate a compressor and a turbine, and the chemical equilibrium code with the lumped method was applied to simulate the combustor. Unsteady-flow phenomenon between rotor and stator of the compressor and the turbine was analyzed by steady mixing-plane method. In this way, the influence of the turbine blade pitch on the engine was investigated. It was shown that the compressor is operated at more higher pressure conditions as narrower the pitch distance of the turbine.
Dust released from the rotating timber cutting process causes various kinds of diseases as well as safety issues. Although there were lots of efforts to reduce the amount of dust by installing large-sized dust collectors or by using expensive high-quality cutters, they proved to be not so effective. In this study we want to modify and improve the design of the rotary cutter system to prevent dust from being released to the environment as possible by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. We have developed CFD models of the conventional cutter and several design modifications. Through the CFD analysis the characteristics of the air flow was predicted, and then the behavior of dust produced during the cutting process was analyzed for different designs. The most efficient design feature to capture dust inside the cutter as much as possible was chosen based on the CFD analysis results. Finally the prototype of the ratary saw machine was constructed and tested to check the dust capturing efficiency, which result is reasonably consistent with the predicted performance through the CFD analysis.
Clocking effects of a stator on the performance and internal flow in an UTRC 1.5 stage axial turbine are investigated using a three-dimensional unsteady flow simulation. Six relative positions of two rows of stator are investigated by positioning the second stator being clocked in a step of 1/6 pitch. The relative efficiency benefit of about 1% is obtained depending on the clocking positions. However, internal flows have some different characteristics from that in the previous study at the best and worst efficiency positions, since be first stator wake is mixed out with the rotor wake before arriving at the leading edge of the second stator. Instead of the first stator wake, it is found that the wake interaction of the first stator and rotor has a important role on a relative efficiency variation at each clocking position. The time-averaged local efficiency along the span at the maximum efficiency is more uniform than that at the minimum efficiency. That is, the spanwise efficiency distribution at the minimum efficiency has larger values in mid-span but smaller values near the hub and casing in comparison to those at the maximum efficiency. Moreover, the difference between maximum and minimum instantaneous efficiencies during one period is found to be smaller at the maximum efficiency than at the minimum efficiency.

A general purpose viscous flow solver Ansys CFX is used to study a Savonius type wave energy converter in a 3D numerical viscous wave tank. This paper presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the effect of blade configuration on the performance of 3 bladed Savonius rotors for wave energy extraction. A piston-type wave generator was incorporated in the computational domain to generate the desired incident waves. A complete OWC system with a 3-bladed Savonius rotor was modeled in a three dimensional numerical wave tank and the hydrodynamic conversion efficiency was estimated. The flow over the rotors is assumed to be two-dimensional (2D), viscous, turbulent and unsteady. The CFX code is used with a solver of the coupled conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, with an implicit time scheme and with the adoption of the hexahedral mesh and the moving mesh techniques in areas of moving surfaces. Turbulence is modeled with the k.e model. Simulations were carried out simultaneously for the rotor angle and the helical twist. The results indicate that the developed models are suitable to analyze the water flows both in the chamber and in the turbine. For the turbine, the numerical results of torque were compared for all the cases.
This paper was studied on the cavitation instability of a Solution Pump Inducer in an absorption chiller-heater. Inlet pressure of LiBr and rotational speed at nominal mode are 2,800 Pa and 3,500 rpm respectively. Due to the marginal operation of available NPSH, the cavitation performance of the inducer is critical for the stable operation without the deterioration of head performance. In the study, cavitation performance and its mode of instability was investigated experimentally. Water was used as the working fluid and the test inducer was scaled up as 1.75 times for detail measurements and flow visualization. Inlet pressure was controlled by a vacuum pump. This research focused on types of cavitation instability and phenomena to investigate the possibility of harmful damage due to cavitation instability. Casing wall pressure and instantaneous inlet pressure was measured to observe the unsteady flow characteristics. Through the visualization and spectrum analysis of pressure, the occurrence region and intensity of asymmetric cavitation and cavitation surge are analyzed in the test inducer.
