  • Culturable bacterial diversity was investigated using freshwater and sediment samples collected from the North Han River basin in 2017, as a part of the research program 'Survey of freshwater organisms and specimen collection'. Over a thousand bacterial strains were isolated from the samples and identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. Among the bacterial isolates, 22 strains showing higher than 98.7% sequence similarity with validly published bacterial species, but not reported in Korea, were classified as unrecorded species in Korea. The 22 bacterial strains were phylogenetically diverse and assigned to 6 classes, 11 orders, 15 families, and 21 different genera. At the generic level, the unreported species were affiliated with Flavobacterium of the class Flavobacteria, Flexibacter of the class Cytophagia, Blastomonas, Brevundimonas, Elstera, Rhizobium, Roseomonas, Sphingomonas, and Xanthobacter of the class Alphaproteobacteria, Albidiferax, Cupriavidus, Curvibacter, Ferribacterium, Hydrogenophaga, Iodobacter, Limnohabitans, Polaromonas, Undibacterium, and Variovorax of the class Betaproteobacteria, Pseudomonas of the class Gammaproteobacteria, and Arcobacter of the class Epsilonproteobacteria. The unreported bacterial species were further characterized by examining Gram reaction, colonial and cellular morphology, and biochemical properties. The detailed descriptions of 22 strains of the unreported bacterial species are also provided.

  • Ostrea denselamellosa and Eriocheir japonica samples were collected from the Seomjin River in 2019 as part of the "Research of Host-Associated Bacteria" research program. Almost 200 bacterial strains were isolated from the O. denselamellosa and E. japonica samples and subsequently identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Among the bacterial isolates, ten strains possessed greater than 98.7% sequence similarity with published bacterial species that had not previously been recorded in Korea. These species were phylogenetically diverse, belonging to three phyla, four classes, seven orders, and eight genera. At the genus and class level, the previously unrecorded species belonged to Pseudoalteromonas, Aliivibrio, Rheinheimera, Leucothrix, and Shewanella of the class Gamma-proteobacteria, Olleya of the class Flavobacteriia, Algoriphagus of the class Cytophagia, and Lactococcus of the class Bacilli. The previously unrecorded species were further characterized by examining their Gram staining, colony and cell morphology, biochemical properties, and phylogenetic positions.

  • Lambertella corni-maris Höhn., an endophytic fungus that is an unrecorded species in Korea, was isolated and cultured from alpine coniferous Korean fir. The Lambertella sp. was found in Korean pine in Yeongwol-gun but no Lambertella spp. were recorded elsewhere in Korea. In this study, the morphological characteristics and molecular barcode sequence of L. cornimaris were compared to its related species. We tried to explain the cultural characteristics and microstructures, such as the conidia of L. corni-maris, compared to closely related taxa and present it.

  • Macrofungi are essential decomposers in the forest environment. Although more than 70% of the land is mountainous, there has been a lack of research on mushroom diversity in Korea compared to the global species estimation. For this reason, the need for further research became apparent. The surveys were conducted from 2014 to 2022 nationwide. As a result, 15 unrecorded macrofungal species were discovered: Agaricus thiersii, Baorangia alexandri, Boletellus putuoensis, Entoloma bulakhae, Entoloma pygmaeopapillatum, Entoloma subtenuicystidiatum, Gerronema kuruvense, Hyphoderma nudicephalum, Hyphoderma tenue, Macrolepiota subcitrophylla, Mycena jingyinga, Mycena yuezhuoi, Ophiocordyceps vespulae, Scytinostroma acystidiatum, and Steccherinum straminellum. These species are identified based on morphological, molecular, and phylogenetic analyses using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the nuclear large subunit rRNA (LSU) region. Here, we provided macro- and micro-morphological figures with phylogenetic trees to support 15 species as unrecorded to Korea.

  • In 2019, 43 bacterial strains were isolated from food, soil, marine environments, human, and animals related sources from the Republic of Korea. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, these isolates were allocated to the phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes as unrecorded species in Korea. The 10 Bacteroidetes strains were classified into the families Bacteroidaceae, Chitinophagaceae, Cytophagaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Prolixibacteraceae (of the orders Bacteroidales, Chitinophagales, Cytophagales, Flavobacteriales, and Marinilabiliales, respectively). The 33 Firmicutes strains belonged to the families Bacillaceae, Paenibacillaceae, Planococcaceae, Staphylococcaceae, Clostridiaceae, Lachnospiraceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, Enterococcaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Leuconostocaceae, and Streptococcaceae (of the orders Bacillales, Clostridiales, and Lactobacillales). These unrecorded bacteria were determined based on taxonomic criterion (>98.7%; 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). In addition, their phylogenetic affiliation, as well as cell and colony morphologies, staining reactions, and physiological and biochemical properties were investigated. Therefore, we report 43 isolates as unrecorded species, and described basic features, isolation source, and locations of these strains.

  • During a week from 6th August in 1976 to survey the fungal flora on higher fleshy fungi around Mt. Jogye 193 specimens were collected and then examined tentatively. As a result fo identification except several troublesome ones it was known that they lie within 66 genera, 110 species, 3 varieties, and 2 forms. Out of them five genera, Eutypa, Sarcosoma in Ascomycetes, and Corticium, Heimiella, Clitopilus in Basidiomycetes were confirmed as unrecorded genera to Korea. And therefrom 26 species and 1 form corresponding almost to the fourth of sum were identified as unrecorded species to Korea, among which Basidiomycetes are provided with descriptions and figures in this survey report.
