  • As a part of the research project "Survey of freshwater organisms and specimen collection," freshwater samples were collected from the Nakdong River. Among the bacterial isolates, we selected strains that showed higher than 98.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with confirmed bacterial species previously unreported in South Korea. The 14 new records to South Korea were phylogenetically diverse and belonged to four phyla, six classes, 11 orders, and 14 genera. At the genus level, these species were found to be affiliated with Reyranella, Ferrovibrio, Brevundimonas, and Aquidulcibacter of the class Alphaproteobacteria; Pseudomonas, Cellvibrio, and Photobacterium of the class Gammaproteobacteria; Paenibacillus and Bacillus of the phylum Firmicutes; Chryseobacterium, Flavobacterium, Pedobacter of the phylum Bacteroidetes; and Actinomadura and Leifsonia of the phylum Actinobacteria. These species were further characterized by examining their Gram reaction, colony and cell morphologies, biochemical properties, and phylogenetic positions. The detailed descriptions of these 14 previously unreported species are provided.

  • In order to know the fauna of Korean Caprellidae, the authors examined the materials which were collected from many places of East Sea, South Sea and YelloW sea in 1955, 1964 and during the period from 1969 to 1975. Collections were made chiefly by hand with pincette at intertidal zones and with gill nets at subtidal zones. The results of the identification were found to be 11 species of Caprella of which the following 9 species were hitherto unrecorded from Korean waters. 1. Caprella californica Stimpson, 1857 2. C. danilevskii Czerniavski, 1868 3. C. decipiens Mayer, 1890 4. C. equilibra Say, 1818 5. C. kroeyeri De Haan, 1849 6. C. polyacantha Utinomi, 1947 7. C. scaura Templeton, 1836 8. • Two new records of marine nematodes, belonging to the family Ironidae de Man, 1876, are reported based on the specimens collected from intertidal sediments from the west coast of Korea. Conilia sinensis is characterized by a relatively long body length, a well-developed buccal cavity with three claw-like teeth, the presence of a single spicule with transverse striations, the presence of rib-shaped telamons, and single precloacal supplement. Pheronous donghaiensis is distinguished from other species of the genus by a well-developed buccal cavity with four claw-like solid teeth and minute denticles, relatively short and thick spicules with the central septum, the presence of 8-9 curved tubular-shaped precloacal supplements, and a sharp pointed tail with three small tubular supplements arranged into two rows in males. In this report, we provide a taxonomic description and illustrations of two unrecorded species of the family Ironidae by differential interference contrast microscopy. This is the first taxonomic report on the species of the family Ironidae from Korea.

  • Two known species of the family Comesomatidae Filipjev, 1918 were collected from marine sediments of the sublittoral zone in the East Sea, Korea and described and illustrated. Dorylaimopsis variabilis Muthumbi, Soetaert and Vincx, 1997, which was originally described from the Kenyan coast in the Indian Ocean, is recorded from the East Sea, Korea for the first time; there are only slight differences in amphidial fovea turns, body length, body width and relative length of tail. Setosabatieria hilarula (De Man, 1922), Platt, 1985, which was originally described from the North Sea, is recorded from the East Sea, Korea for the first time; there are only slight differences in the number of precloacal supplements, the relative length of tail and the posterior portion of tail. We provide pictorial keys for determination of valid species in the genera Dorylaimopsis Ditlevsen, 1918 and Setosabatieria Platt, 1985. This is the first description of the genus Dorylaimopsis and Setosabatieria from Korean waters.

  • A total of 31 bacterial strains were isolated from the Geum River basin in the Republic of Korea during our investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species. The isolated bacterial strains had high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.7%) with those of validly published bacterial species, which have not been reported in Republic of Korea. The 31 bacterial strains were phylogenetically diverse and assigned to 4 phyla, 8 classes, 18 orders, 21 families, and 27 genera. At the genus level, the unreported species were affiliated with Kineococcus, Pedococcus, Rhodoluna, Salinibacterium, Rhodoluna, Arthrobacter, Williamsia, Nakamurella, Nocardioides of the class Actinobacteria, Patulibacter of the class Thermoleophilia, Pontibacter, Hymenobacter of the class Cytophagia, Flavobacterium of the class Flavobacteriia, Geomicrobium of the class Bacilli, Brevundimonas, Gellertiella, Rhizobium, Paracoccus, Taonella, Sphingomonas of the class Alphaproteobacteria, Burkholderia, Polaromonas, Hydrogenophaga, Chitinilyticum, Azospira, Zoogloea of the class Betaproteobacteria, and Pseudomonas of the class Gammaproteobacteria. The unreported bacterial species were further characterized by examining their morphological, cultural, physiological, and biochemical properties. The detailed descriptions of the 31 bacterial strains were provided.

  • In Korea, Hypodematium glanduloso-pilosum was formerly known as the only Korean native species in the genus. Recently, however, we reported one unrecorded taxon, H. squamuloso-pilosum Ching, which was found on rocks at a limestone mountain in Yeongwol, along with one new taxon, H. angustifolium in Okcheon. Traditionally, Hypodematium taxa are often distinguished from each other by vegetative characters such as pinnatifid lamina, glandular hairs, and narrower or linear lanceolate scales on stipe bases. H. glanduloso-pilosum, distributed widely throughout the country except on Jejudo Island in Korea, exhibiting variations in leaf segregation, indusia positions, hair distributions and size. The high variation in the morphological characters in the widely distributed taxon has caused problems delimitating three native species from each other. To evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among H. glanduloso-pilosum and taxa related to Hypodematium (all Korean native taxa), we carried out morphological and molecular analyses (cpDNA rbcL and psbA-trnH) of populations of the genus Hypodematium in Korea. Although H. glanduloso-pilosum exhibits high variations in some morphological characters, the species is characterized by stipes and indusia with densely multicellular hairs and rod-shaped glandular hairs or hairs and lanceolate or oblong lanceolate scales in rhizomes and stipe bases distinguished from those of other Korean native taxa (H. squamuloso-pilosum and H. angustifolium). In the analyses of cpDNA data, three Korean native taxa are placed in the same clade, i.e., in the glanduloso-pilosum group. Moreover, our analyses propose that H. squamuloso-pilosum (China and Korea), H. angustifolium (Korea), and H. fordii (China and Japan) share the same glanduloso-pilosum clade with H. glandulosopilosum (China, Korea, and Japan).
