  • Penicillium is the most common fungal genus in various terrestrial and marine environments. The number of new and unrecorded Penicillium species from various substrates and habitats are continuously increasing. As part of a project to discover indigenous fungi in South Korea, three unrecorded Penicillium species were isolated from mudflats and seaweeds. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of β-tubulin and calmodulin loci, they were identified as P. amaliae, P. infrabuccalum, and P. manginii. Here, we provide a detailed morphological description and sequence information of these previously unrecorded species.

  • Hypocreales is one of the largest orders within the class Sordariomycetes in Ascomycota. Several species of this order are cosmopolitan and have a broad range of habitats. Here, we isolated several fungal strains from environmental samples, including freshwater sediment and plant litter. The strains were identified via molecular and phylogenetic analyses of rDNA and other DNA markers, such as TUB, RPB2, and EF1. The morphological characteristics of the fungi were investigated using microscopy, and culture characteristics were assessed from their growth on several media. We identified 17 species previously unrecorded in Korea: Dactylonectria hordeicola, Flavocillium bifurcatum, Fusarium luffae, Ilyonectria ilicicola, Ilyonectria qitaiheensis, Ilyonectria robusta, Lecanicillium aphanocladii, Nectria ulmicola, Neonectria lugdunensis, Ovicillium oosporum, Pseudonectria foliicola, Sarocladium spinificis, Scolecofusarium ciliatum, Trichoderma appalachiense, Trichoderma subviride, Trichoderma taiwanense, and Trichoderma tsugarense.

  • Through ten field surveys in Kanghwa Island from August of 1997 to March of 2002, total 107 specimens of wood-rotting fungi belonging to the Aphyllophorales were collected and identified to the species. They taxonomically amounted to 10 families, 31 genera, and 48 species. Among them, one family, Steccherinaceae, and four genera, Australohydnum, Castanoporus, Dacryobolus and Haplotrichum were confirmed as new to Korea. • Higher Fungi were collected. twice a month from May to September 2004 during field survey trips to Seoraksan and Odaesan National Parks. All the collected specimens were investigated for the morphological characters of carpophores and other features, and deposited in the herbarium of the Entomopathogenic Fungal Culture Collection (EFCC), Kangwon National University, Chuncheon. Among the identified specimens, three genera Rhodotus, Hotermannia and Sebacina and four species Rhodotus palmatus, Gomphus clavatus, Holtermannia corniformis and Sebacina incrustans were confirmed as new to Korea and reported here with descriptions.

  • Daecheongdo and Socheongdo Islands are located in the West Sea of Korea, 210 km away from land, and are military border areas very close to North Korea, making them difficult to access. Although the ecosystem of the islands is relatively well preserved due to the lack of accessibility, research on fungi of the regions is insufficient. Therefore, we aimed to investigate indigenous fungi in these geographically and geopolitically constrained regions. A survey of the indigenous fungal diversity of the islands was conducted in 2018. All specimens were identified at the species level based on morphological and molecular analyses. Among them, six macrofungi-namely, Agaricus menieri, Crepidotus praecipuus, Dichomitus squalens, Hortiboletus amygdalinus, Melanoleuca friesii, and Trametes lactinea-were not previously reported in Korea. Considering that the proportion of unrecorded species is high in the survey area and period as well as the number of samples collected, similar research on adjacent islands may be necessary.

  • We report on an unrecorded endophytic fungus, Grovesiella abieticola (Zeller & Goodd.) M. Morelet & Gremmen isolated from Abies koreana of Mt. Halla in Jeju. In this study, we used a culture method to determine its conidia and compared relative species using an internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1, 2, and 5.8S ribosomal DNA sequence. Thus, we present the cultural characteristics and morphology of G. abieticola in this paper.

  • During a week from 6th August in 1976 to survey the fungal flora on higher fleshy fungi around Mt. Jogye 193 specimens were collected and then examined tentatively. As a result fo identification except several troublesome ones it was known that they lie within 66 genera, 110 species, 3 varieties, and 2 forms. Out of them five genera, Eutypa, Sarcosoma in Ascomycetes, and Corticium, Heimiella, Clitopilus in Basidiomycetes were confirmed as unrecorded genera to Korea. And therefrom 26 species and 1 form corresponding almost to the fourth of sum were identified as unrecorded species to Korea, among which Basidiomycetes are provided with descriptions and figures in this survey report.
