  • Studies on the diversity of indigenous fungi were conducted in the central districts of South Korea from 2008 to 2013. During the studies, potentially unrecorded agarics were collected. All specimens collected in this study were examined morphologically and phylogenetic analysis was also performed. They were identified as Galerina sideroides and Gymnopus luxurians. These fungi have never been reported in South Korea. We report them here with detailed descriptions and figures.

  • Fungal species belonging to the genus Penicillium are indigenous to a wide range of natural environments. Since the first published reports detailing the discovery of Penicillium, new species have been identified in various countries, including Korea. We present here a full characterization of five species of Penicillium that were previously unreported in Korea. Based on the morphologic characteristics and sequences of genes encoding fungal -tubulin and calmodulin, we identified five Penicillium species, including P. hetheringtonii, P. sublectaticum, and P. jacksonii, which have been unrecorded in Korea, and confirming P. maximae and P. cremeogriseum, as the endophytic fungi isolated in Gyeongsang province, Korea. In this article, we provide detailed morphological descriptions of these fungal species.

  • Several endophytic fungal strains were isolated from Taxus cuspidata and identified by molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit. This study aimed to determine the relative abundance and compare the species diversity of endophytic fungal communities within needle leaves and twigs. We identified a total of 49 endophytic fungal species. Notably, two species, Trichoderma dingleyae and Xylaria cubensis, were discovered to be previously unrecorded in Korea. The fungal communities in both plant tissues demonstrated distinct species composition. Differences were observed in the relative abundance and species diversity index between needle leaves and twigs. Our findings suggest that the host plant tissues influence the species diversity of endophytic fungal communities.

  • During the monitoring of fungal pests in 2016 and 2017, Acrodontium crateriforme, Naganishia friedmannii, Pestalotiopsis trachicarpicola, Penicillium wollemiicola, and Trichoderma thailandicum were isolated from indoor air, mushroom flies (Phytosciara flavipes), and media materials in the cultivation houses of oak wood mushroom (Lentinula edodes) located in Seocheon, Jangheung, Buyeo, and Yeoju, Korea. These fungal species were identified based on their morphological characteristics after their growth on PDA and subsequent molecular analyses of the 26S rDNA, 28S rDNA, β-tubulin gene, and translation elongation factor 1-α gene using PCR amplification and nucleotide sequencing were performed. The results showed that these fungi were previously undocumented in Korea. This study reports descriptions of their taxonomical and known properties.

  • In this study, endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves of five species of woody plants in Jeju, Korea, namely Chamaecyparis obtusa, Cryptomeria japonica, Torreya nucifera, Ilex crenata, and Camellia japonica. The isolated fungal endophytes were identified based on their morphological and molecular characteristics including a sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and 26S regions of rDNA and ${\beta}$-tubulin genes. Ten species of fungal endophytes have not been previously reported in Korea, namely Mycosphaerella aleuritidis, Neofusicoccum eucalyptorum, Neofusicoccum parvum, Phyllosticta citrichinensis, Phyllosticta cryptomeriae, Phomopsis cotoneastri, Sphaerulina rhododendricola, Guignardia mangiferae, Lophodermium jiangnanense, and Lophodermium minus.

  • Wood-rotting fungi of the Aphyllophorales were collected through field trips to mountain areas of the country from January to December of 1997. Through the observation and identification of specimens, two genera, Meruliopsis (type species=M. taxicola) and Pseudomerulius (type species=P. aureus), and four species, Phanerochaete calotricha, Phanerochaete chrysorhiza, Meruliopsis corium, and Pseudomerulius aureus were confirmed as new wood-rotting fungi to Korea and are registered here with descriptions.

  • The leaves and young shoots of several broad leaf trees infected with powdery mildew fungi were collected and observed for the purpose of seeking for the host plants and identifying its pathogenic fungi in the arboretum of Forest Research Institute, Seoul from October to November 1982. Of these, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea, Prunus padus, Celastrus flagellaris, and Fraxinus ${\times}$ chiisanensis were found out to be new host plants of powdery mildew fungi in korea. Morphological characteristics of imperfect state and perfect state of powdery mildew fungi on 4 new host plants were examined. These pathogenic fungi were identified as Podosphaera tridactyla, Uncinula sengokui, and Uncinula fraxini.

  • We isolated fungi from the rhizosphere of Fallopia sachalinensis in Dokdo islands. Morphological and molecular characters, based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), and partial large subunit (LSU) or partial beta-tubulin genes, were used to identify the isolated fungi. The results revealed the fungi isolated from the Fallopia rhizosphere to be Penicillium striatisporum and Gongronella sichuanensis. Given that these species have never previously been recorded in Korea, we have described the morphological and molecular characteristics of these fungi in this study.

  • Seven unrecorded species in the phylum Ascomycota, Emericellopsis pallida (KNU16-167), Scedosporium aurantiacum (KNU16-190), Duddingtonia flagrans (KNU16-279), Bionectria rossmaniae (KNU16-309), Exophiala xenobiotica (KNU16-79), Pseudocercosporella fraxini (KNU16-102), and Stachybotrys sansevieriae (KNU16-141), were isolated in 2016 from field soils collected from various locations in Korea. All of the species were identified and described based on morphological characteristics and rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequence data. Morphological features of these fungi were examined on potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, Czapek yeast extract agar, and yeast extract sucrose agar. Full descriptions and illustrations of their morphological characteristics are provided.
