  • A new species of Xiphinemella is described and illustrated from soil around the roots of larch in Korea. Xiphinemella maiensis n. sp. has stylet length of 63-68$\mu\textrm{m}$, body length of 2.5-3.2 mm, and vulva position of 49-50%. It differs from X. esseri in more posteriorly positioned vulva (42-47% in X. esseri), shorter stylet (72-75$\mu\textrm{m}$ in X. esseri), and more anteriorly located guide ring (25-27 vs. 35-38$\mu\textrm{m}$). It also differs from X. ornata in having longer body (1.94-2.32 mm in X. ornata) and shorter stylet (82-92$\mu\textrm{m}$ in X. ornata). A key to species of the genus is provided. Xiphnema brevicolle, X. diffusum, X. chambersi, and X. insigne are firstly recorded from Korea.

  • Achillea alpina L. subsp. pulchra (Koidz.) Kitam., an unrecorded subspecies belonging to the genus Achillea of Asteraceae, was discovered and is illustrated here. It is known as an endemic species of Hokkaido, Japan, but we discovered it along the seashore at Uljin in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. Having a relatively equally serrate or dentate leaf margin and sparsely villous involucres, this subspecies is easily distinguished from its related taxa. Based on its habitat, it was termed Gaet-top-pul in Korean. We provide a description, illustrations, photographs and a key of related taxa in Korea.

  • While more than 1,000 taxa in Staurastrum were found worldwide, in Korea only 119 taxa, of 68 species 42 varieties 9 forms, were reported so far. In this study, 23 taxa (19 species 4 varieties) of Staurastrum were collected from 15 freshwaters in Korea from Feb. through Nov., 2003. Among these taxa, 12 were newly recorded to Korea. Therefore, the total number of Staurastrum in Korea should be 131 taxa, of 77 species 45 varieties 9 forms, adding 12 newly found taxa. Most of the collected species were coincided with the characteristics previously described, but the sizes of 8 taxa including S. affine were smaller than those previously described. The 7 taxa including S. cerastesa have shown a little dissimilarity in the morphology of semicell and the decoration of cell wall.
