LTE's extension for unlicensed spectrum called Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) is equipped with Listen-Before-Talk (LBT) designed similar with the backoff mechanism of Wi-Fi for coexistence. However, Wi-Fi's backoff mechanism has not evolved from its old design for compatibility with legacy devices, thus LAA's LBT is not efficient either in utilizing spectrum. If LAA operates with no Wi-Fi systems in proximity, it can run more efficient LBT. In this paper, we propose Narrowband Clear Channel Assessment (NCCA) for narrowband transmission. In NCCA, an LAA node performs LBT in either wide or each narrow bandwidth segment. This allows multiple LAA nodes to perform simultaneous transmissions in orthogonal bandwidth segments in the same time slot. We design four variants of NCCA implementation and model their performance using a mathematical model. The coexistence performance of NCCA with conventional wideband nodes and the accuracy of the model are shown via simulation.
The fixed spectrum assignment policy in today's wireless networks leads to inefficient spectrum usage. Cognitive radio network is a new communication paradigm that enables the unlicensed users to opportunistically use the spatio-temporally unoccupied portions of the spectrum, and hence realizing a dynamic spectrum access (DSA) methodology. Interference temperature model proposed by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) permits the unlicensed users to utilize the licensed frequencies simultaneously with the primary users provided that they adhere to the interference temperature constraints. In this paper, we formulate two NP-hard optimal scheduling methods that meet the interference temperature constraints for cognitive radio networks. The first one maximizes the network throughput, whereas the second one minimizes the scheduling delay. Furthermore, we also propose suboptimal schedulers with linear complexity, referred to as maximum frequency selection (MFS) and probabilistic frequency selection (PFS). We simulate the throughput and delay performance of the optimal as well as the suboptimal schedulers for varying number of cognitive nodes, number of primary neighbors for each cognitive node, and interference temperature limits for the frequencies. We also evaluate the performance of our proposed schedulers under both additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and Gilbert-Elliot fading channels.
To enable the coexistence of Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) and Wi-Fi in 5 GHz unlicensed bands, a new channel access mechanism is proposed. Accounting for the fairness between LAA and Wi-Fi, the proposed mechanism finds the optimal transmission time ratio by adaptively adjusting the transmission durations for LAA and Wi-Fi. In addition, we propose a new analytical model for the distributed coordination function of IEEE 802.11 through some modifications of conventional analytical models for saturation and non-saturation loads. By computing the activity ratio of Wi-Fi, the proposed analytical model is able to control the time ratio between LAA and Wi-Fi, which is required for practical implementation of the proposed access mechanism. Through numerical simulations, the proposed channel access mechanism is compared with conventional methods in terms of throughput and utility.

In order for unlicensed devices to co-exist on the same frequency band, the frequency interference mitigation policy is necessary. Because the effects of frequency interference between unlicensed devices may vary depending on the analysis layer, exact interference analysis must be proceeded before making any related spectrum policy. In this paper, a frequency interference between WLAN and WPAN systems that operate at 2.4 GHz ISM band were analyzed in the physical layer and MAC layer, respectively. From the results, we confirmed that the interference analysis in MAC layer is closer to the measured results. Based on these investigations, we suggest a new co-existence criterion for unlicensed devices in MAC layer.
In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), unlicensed users sense the licensed spectrum bands and opportunistically access them without interfering operations of licensed users. Especially, in ad hoc networks, the MAC layer plays an important role in coordinating unlicensed users access to the spectrum and, thus, a number of MAC protocols have been studied recently. In this paper, we comparatively examine MAC protocols in cognitive radio ad hoc networks (CRAHNs). First, we categorize the protocols on the basis of common control channel (CCC) requirements and further review major implementations for each category. Then, we make a qualitative comparison of the protocols in terms of inherent characteristics and performance.

As the spectrum shortage problem has accelerated by the emergence of various services, New Radio-Unlicensed (NR-U) has appeared, allowing users who communicated in licensed bands to communicate in unlicensed bands. However, NR-U network users reduce the performance of Wi-Fi network users who communicate in the same unlicensed band. In this paper, we aim to simultaneously maximize the fairness and throughput of the unlicensed band, where the NR-U network users and the WiFi network users coexist. First, we propose an optimal power allocation scheme based on Monte Carlo Policy Gradient of reinforcement learning to maximize the sum of rates of NR-U networks utilizing rate-splitting multiple access in unlicensed bands. Then, we propose a channel occupancy time division algorithm based on sequential Raiffa bargaining solution of game theory that can simultaneously maximize system throughput and fairness for the coexistence of NR-U and WiFi networks in the same unlicensed band. Simulation results show that the rate splitting multiple access shows better performance than the conventional multiple access technology by comparing the sum-rate when the result value is finally converged under the same transmission power. In addition, we compare the data transfer amount and fairness of NR-U network users, WiFi network users, and total system, and prove that the channel occupancy time division algorithm based on sequential Raiffa bargaining solution of this paper satisfies throughput and fairness at the same time than other algorithms.

In this paper, we proposed a concept of interference load to analyze the performance of spectrum sharing technologies in unlicensed frequency bands. The interference load can quantitatively compare the technical properties of various spectrum sharing technologies, such as frequency hopping(FH), duty cycle(DC), listen-before-talk(LBT). Therefore, it can help to evaluate whether a local regulation about spectrum sharing is reasonably established or not. In order to verify the suggested concept, we applied it to 2.4 GHz frequency bands. Also, we demonstrated a real-time test-bed. Two bit error rate(BER) curves for FH with 10 random channels and DC of 10 %, show such good agreement that our proposed concept is expected to be widely used to assess various spectrum sharing technologies.

This paper investigates the design issues of spectrum sensing in the cognitive radio (CR) networks of opportunistic unlicensed spectrum access. The cognitive radios can perform a communication using the incumbent user spectrum band without the interference caused by the cognitive radio users. In this case, the cognitive radios must know the real-time radio environments of the incumbent user spectrum band using the spectrum sensing, beacon signal, and geo-location database access. Then in this paper, we are going to provide spectrum sensing issues which include the sensing techniques, the regulatory requirements, the analysis of DTV detection threshold, and main considerations associated with the spectrum sensing design in cognitive radio systems. Also, this paper introduces design trade-offs in order to optimize the sensing parameters such as sensing time and sensing complexity.

As mobile traffic is growing, the demand for spectrum is increasing but the deficiency of spectrum becomes serious as the supply is restricted essentially. For resolving the issue, spectrum sharing system is discussed from the technical and regulatory point of view, where multiple radio users occupy same frequency. In this paper, the policies and adoptions of spectrum sharing system in some countries are analyzed with a focus on TV white space and licensed shared access, which are based on unlicensed and licensed spectrum usage respectively. Some legal and regulatory plans to adopt and activate spectrum sharing in the Radio Waves Act system of Korea are proposed as well.

FCC of U.S. permitted usage of unlicensed system on unused spectrum in TV white space after DTV transition. The unlicensed systems are required to avoid harmful interference to licensed users by employing geo-location database and spectrum sensing. The conventional spectrum sensing algorithms for ATSC signal were focused on detection of pilot signal. However, they can not guarantee detection of ATSC signal when pilot signal is attenuated by channel environment such as fading. To overcome drawbacks of conventional schemes, in this paper, we propose a signal detection and data fusion algorithm using cyclo-stationary feature weighted by signal energy. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can provide 2dB SNR gain for 90% detection probability compare with the conventional scheme. We can reduce quiet period for spectrum sensing and improve signal detection probability by employing the proposed algorithm.
