  • Seed size and days required to reach specific growth stages were determined for Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv. varieties which are major grass species found in Korean paddy field and the results were compared with E. frumentacea (Roxb.) Link. In addition, responses of the Echinochloa species on preemergence herbicides (molinate, esprocarb, and mefenacet) were investigated with respect to time of application. One thousand seed weight of E. crus-galli var. oryzicola was about 3 times heavier than that of var. praticola, but was not significantly different that of E. frumentacea. Days requited to reach the 2.5 leaf-stage (LS) were 11, 13, and 14 days after seeding for E. frumentacea, E. crus-galli var. oryzicola, and E. crus-galli var. praticola, respectively. E. crus-galli var. praticola was more sensitive to molinate, esprocarb and mefenacet than var. oryzicola and the sensitivity of both the varieties decreased as the time of application LS was delayed. However, there was no great difference in the response for E. frumentacea when applied between 1.5 and 3.0 LS. In thiocarbamate hebicides esprocarb was more active to Echinochloa species than molinate and the higher the active ingredient of the herbicides, the greater was the activity to Echinochloa species. Differential susceptibility of Echinochloa species to the herbicides was not related to the seed size, but to the early growth stages at the time of herbicide application which were affected by the seed size.

  • Propanil [N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl) propanamide] which was applied at 4,200g ai/hapostemergence 7 days after seeding or transplanting, completely reduced the growth of shoot and root of barnyardgrass at 100% under dry condition while plant height, root length and shoot fresh weight of barnyardgrass at 63, 40 and 78%, respectively under water condition. On the other hand, the herbicide did not affect the growth of shoot and root of rice grown under water condition and transplanting condition, but reduced the plant height, root length and shoot fresh weight of broadcast rice on soil at 24, 18 and 28%, respectively, under dry condition. Microscopically, the epidermal cells of treated-barnyardgrasses under both conditions were severely constricted, chloroplasts in the cells of vascular bunble sheath were partially lacked, and mesophyll cells were often ruptured, whereas those of treated-rice were not affected. Histological observations showed that propanil reduced the thickness of leaf blade of barnyardgrass under both conditions at 36-48% due to mainly reduction and constriction of mesophyll cell, while it did not affect or even increased the thickness of leaves of rice under all conditions compared to control. These results indicate that broadcast rice on soil were more injured than drilled rice in soil under dry condition, however, in the other tested conditions ricer were not affected.

  • Soil moisture is one of the most important interests in hydrological response and the interaction between the land surface and atmosphere. Estimation of Antecedent Wetness Conditions (AWC) which is soil moisture condition prior to a rainfall in the basin should be considered for rainfall-runoff prediction. In this study, Soil Wetness Index (SWI), Antecedent Precipitation Index ($API_5$), remotely sensed Soil Moisture ($SM_{rs}$), and 5 days ground Soil Moisture ($SM_{g5}$) were selected to estimate the AWC at four study area in the Korean Peninsula. The remotely sensed soil moisture data were taken from the AMSR-E soil moisture archive. The maximum potential retention ($S_{obs}$) was obtained from direct runoff and rainfall using Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number (SCS-CN) method by rainfall data of 2011 for each study area. Results showed the great correlations between the maximum potential retention and SWI with a mean correlation coefficient which is equal to -0.73. The results of time length representing the time scale of soil moisture showed a gap from region to region. It was due to the differences of soil types and the characteristics of study area. Since the remotely sensed soil moisture has been proved as reasonable hydrological variables to predict a wetness in the basin, it should be continuously monitored.

  • This study was undertaken to elucidate the behavior of herbicide bensulfuron-methyl[methyl-2-[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxy pyrimidine-2yl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]methyl]benzoate]in soils. Adsorption of the herbicide in soils was mainly correlated with content of organic matter and clay, and canon exchange capacity. Adsorption distribution coefficient(Kd value) in clay loam soil was greater than those in loam and sandy loam soils. The Kd value decreased in the order of zeolite, bentonite, halloysite and laziolite clay minerals. Bensulfuron-methyl moved to 3cm deep in clay loam soil and 4cm deep in sandy loam and herbicide treated layer was 0 to 2cm profile in the two soils. The decomposition rate of bensulfuron methyl varied with the soil properties. The rate was slower in sterilized soil than in nonsterilized. Addition of organic matters to the soils accelerated the decomposotion. The degradation was more rapid in 30$^{\circ}C$ soil temperature than in 20$^{\circ}C$.

  • Effects of butachlor [N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl acetanilide] and 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NA) on post-germination growth, mesocotyl and root anatomy and root-cell membrane permeability of rice (Orvza saliva L.) were investigated. Lengths of mesocotyl and radicle were markedly decreased as the application rates of butachlor increased from 0.1 to 100 ppmW and NA from 1 to 100 ppmW, but there was no effect on coleoptile elongation. Application of butachlor-NA resulted in increase in coleoptile elongation, but decrease in mesocotyl elongation. Partial breakdown of cortical cells in root and mesocotyl was caused by either trutachlor or NA treatments, resulting in increase in intercellular air space. Further increase in the intercellular air space of root and mesocotyl was obtained when butachlor was applied in combination with NA. Increase in root-cell membrane permeability occurred when either butachlor or NA was applied. However, butachlor-NA treatments resulted in reduction in the permeability.

  • This study was conducted to develop a foliar applied herbicide mixture covering wide spectrum weeds in dry direct seeded rice. Uniform precision central composite design(UPCCD) was employed to evaluate the effect of herbicide mixture among cyhalofop-butyl(cyhalofop), bispyribenzoxim and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl(pyrazosulfuron) having different weed control spectrum and to determine the best application rates of the three herbicide mixtures. The partial additive effect was observed in the mixture of cyhalofop and bispyribenzoxim with pyrazosulfron against Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv var crus-galli L., attributed to the negative interaction between cyhalofop and bispyribenzoxim system. Additive effect was observed in the mixture of bispyribenzoxim and pyrazosulfuron against Cyperus serotinus R. and Aneilema keisak H. but cyhalofop had no effect on these weeds. The most appropriate rate of the mixture of cyhalofop with bispyribenzoxim and pyrazosulfuron was 100 : 12 : 10g ai/ha exhibiting $ED_{90}$ against three weeds such as E. crus-galli, C. serotinus and A. keisak.

  • Greenhouse study was undertaken to find tank-mix feasibility of quinclorac with molinate and propanil, selective post-emergence herbicides in controlling barnyardgrass, for reducing the application rate of quinclorac. Following foliar application in combination of quinclorac at 0.038, 0.075, 0.150, and 0.300kg ai/ha with molinate at 0.190, 0.380, 0.750 and 1.500kg ai/ha, and propanil at 0.263, 0.525, 1.050, and 2.100kg ai/ha at 3.5-leaf stage of barnyardgrass, fresh weight and weeding efficacy and their interaction by Colby's efficacy method were evaluated. Percent inhibition of barnyardgrass growth by quinclorac, molinate and propanil at recommended rate were 78.1, 26.1, and 61.7%, respectively. The dose combination shown above 85% in weeding efficacy were from 0.300kg of quinclorac with 0.75kg of molinate and 0.150kg of quinclorac with all rates of propanil. Therefore, combination of quinclorac with molinate tended to additive interaction and that of quinclorac with propanil appeared partially synergistic interaction. Conclusively, for reducing the application rate of quinclorac, the combination of quinclorac with propanil was more synergistic than that of quinclorac with molinate.

  • This experiment was carried out to confirm characteristics of macro granule (GG) for herbicidal efficacy by using remote-controlled aerial application (RCAA) to control annual and perennial weeds in rice paddy field, and phytotoxicity to rice and non target plants of formulation types. Herbicidal efficacy of GG applied by using RCAA was 93.6~96.6% in flooded direct sowing cultivation. There was no difference in phytotoxicity between the hand and the power applicator methods in terms of height, number of tiller and yield component. Herbicidal efficacy of GG applied by using RCAA was 92.7~97.3% in machine transplanting rice field. There was no difference in phytotoxicity between the hand and RCAA methods in terms of height, number of tiller and yield component. When suspension concentrate (SC) and GG were applied directly on Chinese cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, pepper, soybean and wild sesame, several symptoms of injury such as, the inhibition of growth, yellowish, leaf fall and withering was observed.

  • In response of fungicides for control of gray snow mold, isolates of Typhula incarnata were collected from three golf courses in 2012 Yongpyeong, Korea and tested for sensitivity to propiconazole, tebuconazole and azoxystrobin fungicides. Four discriminatory concentrations were used to detect in vitro sensitivity of 50 isolates. Mean 50% effective concentration inhibiting mycelial growth ($EC_{50}$) values for tebuconazole was the lowest among the three fungicides. The $EC_{50}$ value of tebuconazole ranged from 0.0005 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ to 0.014 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ with a mean of 0.0048 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$. The mean $EC_{50}$ values of propiconazole in triazole family was 0.5825 (0.78-1.651) ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$. $EC_{50}$ value of azoxystrobin ranged from 0.0017 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ to 0.131 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ with a mean of 0.0278 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$. There was no correlation among $EC_{50}$ values for propiconazole, azoxystrobin and tebuconazole indicating no cross-resistance relationships with each other. Results of this study were confirmed no resistance isolates in vitro sensitivity of T. incarnata of three fungicides in Yongpyeong.

  • Biocontrol potential of an isolate of Helicosporium spp. against Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporium and Phytophthora drechsleri was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. A selected biocontrol agent designated as Helicosporium 0635BP strongly inhibited growth and lysed mycelium of Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporium on PDA. Autoclaved culture filtrate of the agent also completely inhibited growth of the turfgrass large patch pathogen, R. solani AG2-2 IV at the concentration of 50 ml $L^{-1}$. The pathogen was killed when dipped under the 20% filtrate for four hours or 50% for one hr. In a field trial, plots applied with the crude or times diluted culture filtrate showed 100% control efficacy of the turfgrass large patch as a chemical applied for a comparison. Results indicated that Helicosporium 0635BP is a promising biocontrol agent on control of the turfgrass large patch disease and its culture filtrate contained unknown heat suitable antifungal substance (s). Further studies on mass production, purification and identification of the unknown compound (s) are in progress for practical use.
