  • In this study, an overall product design process will be presented by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) and robust design. From the conceptual design stage, the logical methods are used to select the appropriate concepts satisfying the customer requirements and the other conditions. The next phase is the embodiment design phase in which the deterministic and robust design approach are used to obtain the improvement in product design. Typically, this approach is applied for developing the simple bookshelf design. The results show the efficient approach which can be supported to develop the new product.

  • Information design is a new scientific subject, which was named in the 20th century. The design methods of information design and the display of information are continually evolving with the change in the world. While sorting out the background and concept of information design, this article aims to identify the issues of information design. One issue is that environmental information design is a vague concept. Thus, leading to this type of information design is without any comprehensive analysis. Second, the impact of culture has not received adequate attention. This article is based on the Japanese Wabi-sabi culture. It analyzes the impact of culture on information design. The article deeply explores the role of Wabi-sabi in information design through case studies, and it reflects the characteristics of design products by culture.

  • This paper describes an information model, devised to manage roadway design information and to improve the collaboration among the multidisciplinary design teams. An analysis concerning the workflow, the rules and the functions of current roadway design was conducted. A process model based on the result of the analysis was developed by utilizing IDEF0 methodology. The process model reflects the interdependencies among multidisciplinary design disciplines and is capable of managing communication processes. This paper also discusses the design information hierarchy and the component representation schemes for systematic design information management. It is anticipated that the proposed information model would be able to improve the overall process of design of roadway construction projects by managing design information and helping the participants communicate and share information of the project effectively.

  • Compared to the significant approach of project-based learning research, a data-driven design project-based learning has not reached a meaningful consensus regarding the most valid and reliable method for assessing design creativity. This article proposes an advanced information data-interactive learning system for creative design using a service design process that combines a design thinking. We propose a service framework to improve the convergence design process between students and advanced information data analysis, allowing students to participate actively in the data visualization and research using patent data. Solving a design problem by discovery and interpretation process, the Advanced information-interactive learning framework allows the students to verify the creative idea values or to ideate new factors and the associated various feasible solutions. The student can perform the patent data according to a business intelligence platform. Most of the new ideas for solving design projects are evaluated through complete patent data analysis and visualization in the beginning of the service design process. In this article, we propose to adapt advanced information data to educate the service design process, allowing the students to evaluate their own idea and define the problems iteratively until satisfaction. Quantitative evaluation results have shown that the advanced information data-driven learning system approach can improve the design project - based learning results in terms of design creativity. Our findings can contribute to data-driven project-based learning for advanced information data that play a crucial role in convergence design in related standards and other smart educational fields that are linked.

  • Design is an act based on multidisciplinary information. The involvement of various stakeholders makes it difficult to process, plan, and integrate. Iteration is frequent in most of the engineering design and development projects including construction. Design iterations cause rework, and extra efforts are required to get the optimal sequence and to manage the projects. The simple project management techniques are insufficient to fulfill the requirements of integrated design. This paper entails two things: design structure matrix and design parameters' information based model. The emphasis has been given to optimal sequence and crucial iteration using design structure matrix analysis technique. The design projects have been studied using survey data from industry. The optimal sequence and crucial iterations results have been utilized for proposed model. Model integrates two things: information about produced- required key design parameters and information of design changes during the design process. It will help to get familiar with Design management in order to fulfill contemporary needs.

  • In shipbuilding, diverse manufacturing techniques for automation have been developed and used in practice. Among them, however, the hull forming automation is the one that has not been of major concern compared with others such as welding and cutting. The basis of the development of this process is to find out how to extract thermal forming information. There exist various methods to obtain such information and the 3D design shape that needs to be formed should be extracted first for getting the necessary thermal forming information. Except well-established shipyards which operate 3D design systems, most of the shipyards only rely on 2.5D design systems and do not have an easy way to obtain 3D surface design data. So in this study, various shipbuilding design systems used by shipyards are investigated and a 3D design surface data extraction method is proposed from those design systems. Then an example is presented to show the extraction of real 3D surface data using the proposed method and computation of thermal forming information using the data.
