Analysis of Relationship Between Job Stress and Fatigue According to The Type A/B Behavior Pattern of Physical Therapists

  • Stress and fatigue are general physical aspects of our daily lives. It has been shown that physical therapists have different levels of job stress and fatigue according to the type A/B behavior patterns. This study collected data from 212 physical therapists between October 28 and November 23, 2016 using an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. The study results showed the proportion of physical therapists with the Type A behavior patterns(TABP) was 18% greater than that of physical therapists with the Type B behavior patterns(TBBP). In this study, physical therapists with TABP were compared with physical therapists with TBBP. The results indicated that physical therapists with TABP were more inclined to experience higher levels of overall job stress and fatigue from the following stress factors: physical environment, job requirement, and job autonomy. Therefore, the stronger the tendency toward TABP, the stronger the feeling of job stress and fatigue from physical environment, job requirement, and job autonomy. Those with a tendency toward TBBP showed positive correlations between job requirement and the total job stress score; thus, the stronger the tendency toward TBBP, the stronger the feeling of overall job stress and fatigue from job requirement. This study suggests that it is necessary to manage the job stress and fatigue of physical therapists with both TABP and TBBP and to manage the job stress and fatigue of physical therapists with the type A behavioral pattern.

Gender-related Factors Associated with Upper Extremity Function in Workers

  • Objectives: This study aimed to find gender distinctions in terms of the sociology of the population; to determine work-related factors; to analyze gender differences in daily living, work, sports, and art performances; and to identify gender-related factors that limited performance of daily living and work activities. Methods: A questionnaire was designed that included disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH), accident history, disease history, work duration at current workplace, marital status, job satisfaction, job autonomy, and physical demands of the job. Out of 1,853 workers surveyed, 1,173 questionnaires (63.3%; 987 males, 186 females) included responses to DASH disability and DASH optional work and were judged acceptable for analysis. Results: Upper extremity functional limitation during work and daily living was higher for females than males. The limitations for males increased according to their household work time, accident history, work duration, job satisfaction, physical demand, and job autonomy. Meanwhile, female workers' upper extremity discomfort was influenced by their disease history, job satisfaction, and physical demands. In addition, the size of the company affected male workers' upper extremity function, while marriage and hobbies influenced that of female workers. Conclusion: This study addressed sociodemographic factors and work-related factors that affect each gender's upper extremity function during daily living and working activities. Each factor had a different influence. Further studies are needed to identify the effect that role changes, not being influenced by risks at work, have on musculoskeletal disorders.

A Study on the Territorial Reform of Local Government in West Germany (독일의 지방 행정구역 개편에 관한 고찰 - 구서독을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper aims to examine the background, process, and characteristics of the territorial reform of local governments in West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany) in the 1960s and 70s. During this period the territorial structure and function of municipality (Gemeinde), county (Kreis) and county-free town (Kreisfreie Stadt) as local governments were fundamentally reformed. The territorial reform of local governments paid special attention to merge the small-sized municipalities and to create the joint authorities in order to build the system of central localities. There had been criticism on the uniform boundary delimitation, confusion of regional identity, erosion of local autonomy and emphasis on the regional planning. But the territorial reform of the period has contributed to improve the performance of public administration and to strengthen the service delivery and planning capacity.

Evaluating Perceived Smartness of Product from Consumer's Point of View: The Concept and Measurement

  • Due to the rapid development of IT (information technology) and internet, products become smart and able to collect, process and produce information and can think of themselves to provide better service to consumers. However, research on the characteristics of smart product is still sparse. In this paper, we report the systemic development of a scale to measure the perceived product smartness associated with smart product. To develop product smartness scale, this study follows systemic scale development processes of item generation, item reduction, scale validation, reliability and validity test consequently. And, after acquiring a large amount of qualitative interview data asking the definition of smart product, we add a unique process to reduce the initial items using both a text mining method using 'r' s/w and traditional reliability and validity tests including factor analysis. Based on an initial qualitative inquiry and subsequent quantitative survey, an eight-factor scale of product smartness is developed. The eight factors are multi-functionality, human-like touch, ability to cooperate, autonomy, situatedness, network connectivity, integrity, and learning capability consequently. Results from Korean samples support the proposed measures of product smartness in terms of reliability, validity, and dimensionality. Implications and directions for further study are discussed. The developed scale offers important theoretical and pragmatic implications for researchers and practitioners.

Impacts of Occupational Stress on Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment among Certified Geriatric Caregivers (노인요양보호사의 직무스트레스가 직무만족과 조직몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: An increase in the number of caregivers is necessary to provide services to the elderly, but more importantly, it is qualitative management for them. The purpose of this study was to identify occupational stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment and to explore the impact of occupational stress on job satisfaction and organizational commitment among caregivers employed in health service centers for the elderly. Methods: This descriptive survey was a cross-sectional correlational design of 118 caregivers. The questionnaire included occupational stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. Stepwise multiple regression was applied. Results: Job satisfaction and organization commitment of caregivers were found to be above the average. There was a high level of job stress due to lack of job autonomy, job demands, and inadequate compensation. It has been found that the inappropriate compensation, organization system, work culture, and lack of job autonomy affected job satisfaction of caregivers. The factors affecting organizational commitment were inadequate compensation, job insecurity, and work culture. Conclusions: Efforts should be made to assess and complement the appropriateness of compensation and work culture that are taken to relieve job stress to enhance the job satisfaction and organizational commitment of caregivers.

The Relationship Between Frequency of Injuries and Workplace Environment in Korea: Focus on Shift Work and Workplace Environmental Factors

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shift work on occupational safety in various industrial sectors. The study analyzes the effects of shift work on the health of workers by considering factors such as the workplace environment and welfare. Methods: Focusing on the $4^{th}$ Korean Working Conditions Survey, this study used an ordinary least-square multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable was the annual frequency of injuries reported by workers. Independent variables were categorized as demographic, shift work, workplace environment, and welfare variables. The analysis was conducted on two levels: 1) Shift work and nonshift work groups were compared, and 2) Shift work was compared with fixed and rotating shifts. Results: For the entire group, age, a low level of education, work hours, and daily and dispatch work negatively impacted the frequency of injuries. Shift work was negatively affected by workplace environment and welfare factors. In the shift group, the frequency of injuries was lower than that of regular workers, and the higher the autonomy in the choice of work hours, the lower the frequency of injuries. Furthermore, shift workers in Korea have more extended work hours (49.25 h/week) than other workers (46.34 h/week). Conclusion: Overall, welfare factors such as workplace satisfaction and worke-life balance reduced the frequency of injuries. The effect of shift work was limited, but it was confirmed that shift worker autonomy could reduce the frequency of injuries.

Exploring the Relationships between Major Satisfaction and Psychological Well-being of Female Engineering Students (공과대학 여학생의 전공만족과 심리적 안녕감과의 관계 탐색)

  • This research aims to examine the relationship between major satisfaction and psychological well-being of female engineering students. To achieve this goal, first, differences in major satisfaction and psychological well-being among engineering students were examined. Second, differences in major satisfaction and psychological well-being among female undergraduate students were investigated. In addition, the effects of psychological well-being, as perceived by undergraduate students by gender and major, on major satisfaction were explored. A total of three hundred and forty-nine (349) undergraduate students from two universities in Korea responded to survey based on a two-variables scale. The findings were that, firstly, male engineering students scored higher in two variables including their most sub-factors, and that gender differences in relation satisfaction as well as positive relationship with others, autonomy, and environmental mastery were statistically significant. Secondly, female engineering students scored higher in major satisfaction and several sub-factors of two variables, and that major differences in major satisfaction (total), social perception satisfaction, and autonomy - a sub-factor of psychological well-being - were statistically significant. Thirdly, a positive correlation among major satisfaction and psychological well-being was identified. Finally, psychological well-being could explain about 19% of major satisfaction. The practical implications of these findings are discussed herein, with attention on education for promotion of major satisfaction.

Entrepreneurial Orientation Affecting the Performance of Women-Owned SMEs: Evidence from Vietnam

  • This study desires to examine the impact of five dimensions of entrepreneurial (EO) orientation (innovation, competitive aggressiveness, proactiveness, risk-taking, autonomy) on the operation of women-owned SMEs; the author conducted a case study in Vietnam. How will each dimension of EO affect women-owned SMEs' performance? This study aims to seek the answer to these questions. A survey research design and a theoretical framework have been developed for all factors in the current context. A simple random sampling technique was applied in 300 SMEs in some provinces of Vietnam through a survey questionnaire, and a total of 258 valid responses were assessed as appropriate. The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. Cronbach's α test and factor analysis have been carried out to test the reliability of data and validate the hypothesis. Research results show that innovation, competitive aggressiveness, proactiveness, and autonomy positively affect business performance, while risk-taking negatively affects business performance. The results suggest that female business owners should know how to improve each dimension of the entrepreneurial in line with its context. Research results are important implications for Government administrative agencies for businesses to consult and introduce effective support policies. It is recommended that similar studies be replicated to confirm this result.

Analysis on the Trend and Reality of Higher Education Marketization in China (중국 고등교육의 시장화 추세와 실상 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze widely how the higher education of China introduced market mechanism, adjusted and changed its structure, and what is its characteristic today. The market-orientedness of China's higher education has been strengthened as the direction of Chinese socialism was converted to the improvement of productivity and Socialist's Market Economy proceeded. It developed gradually from the experimental stage of the introduction of market economy, through its real introduction stage and the stage of strengthening of market-orientedness, and finally to the deepening and development stage. Through these processes, China's higher education has got the characteristic of market-orientedness. It is being improved for the strengthening of autonomy, privatization, and raising of competitiveness and has China's unique local trait.

Enhancing Professional Awareness of Informed Consent : Safeguarding the Rights of Patients and Practitioners

  • Informed consent is a crucial communication process between doctors and patients for obtaining patients' approval before initiating medical treatment. It is derived from the legal principles of medical contracts and requires doctors to explain the treatment process to patients. Surgeons should be aware of informed consent not only to avoid unnecessary litigation risks but also to provide patients with the right to self-determination. The aim of the study is to help surgeons in Korea understand the legal doctrine on informed consent for practical application. This article reviews the legal doctrine of informed consent according to 5W1H-why, who, whom, what, when, and how-with judicial cases to communicate effectively with patients in clinical settings. Irrespective of the seniority and rank of a doctor, they have the responsibility to provide patients with the information required to protect their right to self-determination. Informed consent should be advanced for patients to consider, discuss with significant others, and determine whether or not to undergo medical treatment. At that stage, patients need to be informed of the necessity, risks, and so on. The most common method of informed consent is an oral explanation utilizing certain forms for documentation. However, the informed consent of patients can be exempted on certain occasions. Optimal informed consent, when implemented, leads to patient-centered care, which significantly improves patient satisfaction and outcomes. Ultimately, it not only protects doctors from litigation risks but also upholds patients' autonomy.
