  • In order to obtain the maximum characteristics of motors such as torque and efficiency, all motors basically use universal inverters designed for each motor's characteristics. However, if you look at the recent research results, you can see cases of SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) driving studies using 6-switch inverters, which are BLDC(Brushless DC Motor) universal inverters, and research cases of driving 3-phase BLDC motors using 4-switch inverters. Therefore, it is possible to search for research methods by approaching various methods of driving and control that can drive each motor apart from the existing universal inverter. In line with this research trend, in this paper, a C-dump type converter, which is an SRM drive converter, was applied as a drive driver for a BLDC motor, and its characteristics and possibilities were studied.

  • The application of the EGR system is increasing according to the recent trend of conversion to green-ships. EGR blower, one of the core parts of the EGR, consists of aerodynamic system and e-motor and inverter and etc. For the e-motor, a permanent magnet type synchronous motor with high energy density and excellent efficiency is applied recently. Small and medium-sized enterprises trying to develop the e-motors, however, for marine inverters mostly developed by global advanced companies due to the rigid classification certification and technical difficulties. One of disadvantage of universal inverters is that when optimal control fails, it is difficult to find the cause from user's point of view. Therefore, in this study, optimal controllers(Current vector contol and Tracking observer) for SPMSM for EGR blower was designed and verified to analyze the causes of failure of optimal control of universal inverter.

  • This paper describes a load simulator with power-recovery capability, which is based on the voltage source converter-inverter set. The load simulator described in this paper can save the electric energy that should be consumed to test the operation and performance of the distributed generation system and the power quality compensator. The load simulator consists of a converter-inverter set with a DSP controller for system control and PWM pulse generation. The converter operates as a universal load to model the linear load and the non-linear load, while the inverter feed the energy back to the power source with harmonic compensation. The load simulator can be widely used in the lab to test the performance of the distributed generation system and the power quality compensator.

  • The H-bridge inverter is the fundamental power cell of the cascaded distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM). Thus, cell reliability is important to the compensation performance and stability of the overall system. The concept of the power electronics building block (PEBB) is an ideal solution for the power cell design. In this paper, an H-bridge inverter-based “plug and play” HPEBB is introduced into the main circuit and the controller to improve the compensation performance and reliability of the device. The section that discusses the main circuit primarily emphasizes the design of electrical parameters, physical structure, and thermal dissipation. The section that presents the controller part focuses on the principle of complex programmable logic device -based universal controller This section also analyzes typical reliability and anti-interference issues. The function and reliability of HPEBB are verified by experiments that are conducted on an HPEBB test-bed and on a 10 kV/± 10 Mvar DSTATCOM industrial prototype.

  • The full-bridge inverter, widely used for single-phase photovoltaic grid-connected applications, presents a leakage current issue. Therefore, an AC bypass branch is introduced to overcome this challenge. Nevertheless, existing modulation strategies entail drawbacks that should be addressed. One is the zero-crossing distortion (ZCD) of the AC current caused by neglecting the AC filter inductor voltage. Another is that the system cannot deliver reactive power because the AC bypass branch switches at the power frequency. To address these problems, this work proposes an optimized hybrid modulation strategy. To reduce ZCD, the phase angle of the inverter output voltage reference is shifted, thereby compensating for the neglected leading angle. To generate the reactive power, the interval of the negative power output is calculated using the power factor. In addition, the freewheeling switch is kept on when power is flowing into the grid and commutates at a high frequency when power is fed back to the DC side. In this manner, the dead-time insertion in the high-frequency switching area is minimized. Finally, the performances of the proposed modulation strategy and traditional strategies are compared on a universal prototype inverter. Experimental results validate the theoretical analysis.

  • This work aims to study and analyze the various operating modes of universal power converter which is powered by solar and thermoelectric generators. The proposed converter is operated in a DC-DC (buck or boost mode) and DC-AC (single phase) inverter with high efficiency. DC power sources, such as solar photovoltaic (SPV) panels, thermoelectric generators (TEGs), and Li-ion battery, are selected as input to the proposed converter according to the nominal output voltage available/generated by these sources. The mode of selection and output power regulation are achieved via control of the metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) switches in the converter through the modified stepped perturb and observe (MSPO) algorithm. The MSPO duty cycle control algorithm effectively converts the unregulated DC power from the SPV/TEG into regulated DC for storing energy in a Li-ion battery or directly driving a DC load. In this work, the proposed power sources and converter are mathematically modelled using the Scilab-Xcos Simulink tool. The hardware prototype is designed for 200 W rating with a dsPIC30F4011 digital controller. The various output parameters, such as voltage ripple, current ripple, switching losses, and converter efficiency, are analyzed, and the proposed converter with a control circuit operates the converter closely at 97% efficiency.
