  • The DMM (Deep mixing method) is a construction method in which an improved pile is installed in the soft ground by excavation ground using an auger and then mixing ground stabilizer with soil. Improved pile installed in the soft ground by the DMM may have different compressive strength depending on the properties and characteristics of the soil. In the previous study, laboratory tests were performed on the ground stabilizer for the DMM developed by using the ash of the circulating fluidized bed boiler as a stimulator for alkali activation of the blast furnace slag. And the test results were analyzed to derive the correlation between the unit weight of binder (γB) and the uniaxial compressive strength (qu). In this study, comparative reviews were conducted on the correlations derived from the same laboratory tests on soil material collected from the Saemangeum area and the stability of the site was evaluated by analyzing the test results performed at the site. As a result, the clay collected from the Saemangeum area satisfies the correlation between the unit weight of binder (γB) and the uniaxial compressive strength (qu) derived from the previous study. And the result of the test at the field showed a higher uniaxial compressive strength than the standard strength at the field, indicating excellent stability.

  • PURPOSE. Alginate mixers available in the market do not have the automatic proportioning unit. In this study, an automatic proportioning unit for the alginate mixer and controller software were designed and produced for a new automatic proportioning unit. With this device, it was ensured that proportioning operation could arrange weight-based alginate impression materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The variation of coefficient in the tested groups was compared with the manual proportioning. Compression tension and tear tests were conducted to determine the mechanical properties of alginate impression materials. The experimental data were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA and Tukey test at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS. No statistically significant differences in modulus of elastisity (P>0.3), tensional/compresional strength (P>0.3), resilience (P>0.2), strain in failure (P>0.4), and tear energy (P>0.7) of alginate impression materials were seen. However, a decrease in the standard deviation of tested groups was observed when the customized machine was used. To verify the efficiency of the system, powder and powder/water mixing were weighed and significant decrease was observed. CONCLUSION. It was possible to obtain more mechanically stable alginate impression materials by using the custom-made proportioning unit.

  • The wheel bearing hub unit is developed type of wheel bearing unified with the hub parts. It has advantage of reducing the weight and the number of components. And, it also improves uniformity of manufacturing quality, In order to design the wheel bearing hub units, many techniques are used such as load analysis, structure analysis and bearing characteristics analysis and so forth. These techniques need highly accurate load conditions founded on service conditions. In this study, to design the wheel bearing hub units used widespread in passenger cars, the service load was measured through driving tests on the public roads and in the special events. The public roads are classified into highway, intercity road, rural road, urban road, and unpaved road so as to know what the characteristics of the road loads are. The results of the tests showed that the wheel force was relative to the lateral acceleration, and also could be calculated from the lateral acceleration. The lateral acceleration was measured from 0.0G to 0.6G in general driving on the public roads, with different distributions in each road type. In special events, the maximum lateral acceleration was measured from 0.8G to 1.3G.

  • Recently, composite hollow bushings have been increasingly employed mainly from the various characteristics. Composite bushings are superior to porcelain bushings in several respects, including lighter weight, better anti-pollution and anti-explosion properties, and easer manufacturing. Filament wound GRP tubes which have various winding angle were manufactured by using a filament winding machine. This paper will show some design issues and winding condition for composite bushing. And, results show that the winding condition of composite GRP tubes can be used to improved their bending strength and pressure, For bending and pressure tested, tubes with the hybrid winding pattern show higher strength than those of unit winding pattern. Also, the influence of absorption was evaluated through such as measurement of the dye penetration test and water diffusion test, also aspects of surface state using scanning electron microscopy.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest optimum micro-filler experiment method to select the optimal particle size of earth for using in earth construction works and test this suggestion through compressive strength measurement. According to the results of selecting the method to choose the optimum micro-filler mixing of earth and sand, three-stage filling(plate tamping) showed relatively high results and so was estimated to be the proper filling method. According to the results of optimum micro-filler experiment of earth and sand by the maximal sizes of sand, between 80% and 90% showed the highest result values. The larger the maximum size of sand was, the lower the addition ratio of sand was in optimum micro-filler mixing. According to the results of compressive strength experiment by the particle sizes of earth and sand, 90% in the addition ratio of sand showed the highest results, and so tended to be similar to the results of unit volume weight experiment.

  • Parametric studies based on laboratory pilot tests were performed to investigate the relationships between electrical resistivity and properties of contaminated soils. Three kinds of sandy soils sampled and leachate from an industrial waste landfill were mired to model the contaminated soils. Electrical resistivity of soils was measured by using a simulated resistivity cone penetrometer probe. In the experiments. the electrical resistivity was observed by changing the water content, void ratio, unit weight, degree of saturation, and concentration of the leachate. The test results show that the electrical resistivity of soils depends largely on the water content and the electrical property of pore water rather than unit weight and types of soils.

  • Soil compaction is one of the most important activities in the area of civil works, including road construction, airport construction, port construction and backfilling construction of structures. Soil compaction, particularly in road construction, can be categorized into subgrade compaction and roadbed compaction, and is significant work that when done poorly can serve as a factor causing poor construction due to a lack of compaction. Currently, there are many different types of compaction tests, and the plate bearing test and the unit weight of soil test based on the sand cone method are commonly used to measure the degree of compaction, but many other methods are under development as it is difficult to secure economic efficiency. For the purpose of this research, a portable penetration meter called the Free-Fall Penetration Test (FFPT) was developed and manufactured. In this study, a homogeneous sample was obtained from the construction site and soil was classified through a sieve analysis test in order to perform grain size analysis and a specific gravity test for an indoor test. The principle of FFPT is that the penetration needle installed at the tip of an object put into free fall using gravity is used to measure the depth of penetration into the road surface after subgrade or roadbed compaction has been completed; the degree of compaction is obtained through the unit weight of soil test according to the sand cone method and the relationship between the degree of compaction and the depth of the penetration needle is verified. The maximum allowable grain size of soil is 2.36 mm. For $A_1$ compaction, a trend line was developed using the result of the test performed from a drop height of 10 cm, and coefficient of determination of the trend line was $R^2=0.8677$, while for $D_2$ compaction, coefficient of determination of the trend line was $R^2=0.9815$ when testing at a drop height of 20 cm. Free fall test was carried out with the drop height adjusted from 10 cm to 50 cm at increments of 10 cm. This study intends to compare and analyze the correlation between the degree of compaction obtained from the unit weight of soil test based on the sand cone method and the depth of penetration of the penetration needle obtained from the FFPT meter. As such, it is expected that a portable penetration tester will make it easy to test the degree of compaction at many construction sites, and will lead to a reduction in time, equipment, and manpower which are the disadvantages of the current degree of compaction test, ultimately contributing to accurate and simple measurements of the degree of compaction as well as greater economic feasibility.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the engineering and environmental properties of the waste tire powder-added lightweight soil (TLS) used as flowable backfill. The TLS used in this experiment consisted of dredged soil, bottom ash, waste tire powder and cement. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals and water contents ranging from 140% to 200% by the weight of the dry dredged soil. Several series of unconfined compression tests, flow tests, and leaching tests were carried out. Experimental results for the TLS indicated that the unconfined compressive strength, secant modulus (), and unit weight of the TLS decreased with an increase in waste tire powder content. However, as the waste tire powder content increased, the stress-strain relationship of the TLS showed more ductile behavior rather than brittle behavior. The flow value increased with an increase in water content, but decreased with an increase in waste tire powder content. The result of the leaching test showed that the leaching amounts of heavy metals were lower than the permitted limits suggested by the Ministry of Environment.
