  • As the huge economical loss and function paralysis of information technology-based systems can be caused by the misoperation of residual current devices(RCDs) due to surge voltages and currents, RCDs shall not operate by surge currents. In this paper, in order to evaluate the reliability of residual current operated circuit-breakers with integral overcurrent protection for household and similar uses((RCBOs) stressed by surges, the unintended trip characteristics of RCBOs under surge currents were experimentally investigated using the combination wave generator. Seven different types of single-phase RCBOs being present on the domestic market were investigated according to KS C IEC 61009-1 standard. As a result, all kinds of specimens were satisfied the requirements for 0.5 [${\mu}s$]/100[kHz] ring wave impulse currents. Most of specimens stressed by the 8/20[${\mu}s$] impulse current tripped at least one or more, and some of them were broken down during consecutive tests. It was found that only one type of specimens meets the L-N mode immunity to the combination wave of 1.2/50[${\mu}s$] impulse voltage and 8/20[${\mu}s$] impulse current.

  • EPRI URD requires that the reactor be capable of accommodating an unintended CEA drop without initiating a trip and operating at a reduced power with ay single CEA fully inserted. YGN 3 and 4 reactors have 12-finger CEAs, and the CPCS will trip the reactor due to their large reactivities when one of them is dropped at a high power. The ABB-CE reactor power cutback system has been proposed to be used against the 12-Finger CEA drop to avoid the reactor trips. The results of study show that the reactor power cutback can prevent the reactor trips of the 12-Finger CEA drop when the CPCS has enough operating thermal margin (more than 9% for YGN 3&4 Cycle 1). It is noted, however, that the probability of a 12-Finger CEA drop is very low, less than one per 100 reactor years for YGN 3& and System 80$^{+}$ plants.

  • In this paper, protection coordination between residual current devices and surge protective devices in low-voltage consumer's distribution systems are presented. In the case that a surge protrctive device(SPD) is located on the load side of an residual current device(RCD), when the surge is injected from the source side of the RCD, most of injected surge currents are split into the RCD and the protection coordination between the SPD and RCD is improper, three of 6 specimens experience unintended operation due to test impulse currents. Also when the surges is injected from the load side, a lot of the surge currents is split into the SPD, but a half of test specimens causes nuisance trip. Coordination between SPD and RCD is not valid. When installing SPD, it is important to select SPD after due consideration of the protection voltage level of metal oxide varistor embedded in RCD. It is expected that the results obtained from this work could be useful to improve the protection effects of SPD in low-voltage distribution systems.
