In the late in-vessel phase of a nuclear reactor severe accident, the internal heat transfer and crust evolution during the debris bed melting process have important effects on the thermal load distribution along the vessel wall, and further affect the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) failure mode and the state of melt during leakage. This study coupled the phase change model and large eddy simulation to investigate the variations of the temperature, melt liquid fraction, crust and heat flux distributions during the debris bed melting process in the hypothetical severe accident of HPR1000. The results indicated that the heat flow towards the vessel wall and upper surface were similar at the beginning stage of debris melting, but the upward heat flow increased significantly as the development of the molten pool. The maximum heat flux towards the vessel wall reached 0.4 MW/m2. The thickness of lower crust decreased as the debris melting. It was much thicker at the bottom region with the azimuthal angle below 20° and decreased rapidly at the azimuthal angle around 20-50°. The maximum and minimum thicknesses were 2 and 90 mm, respectively. By contrast, the distribution of upper crust was uniform and reached stable state much earlier than the lower crust, with the thickness of about 10 mm. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis of initial condition indicated that as the decrease of time interval from reactor scram to debris bed dried-out, the maximum debris temperature and melt fraction became larger, the lower crust thickness became thinner, but the upper crust had no significant change. The sensitivity analysis of in-vessel retention (IVR) strategies indicated that the passive and active external reactor vessel cooling (ERVC) had little effect on the internal heat transfer and crust evolution. In the case not considering the internal reactor vessel cooling (IRVC), the upper crust was not obvious.
In this study, changing characteristics of bed materials downstream of Daecheong Dam by flushing flow was investigated. Flushing flow affected the downstream environment in such a way that the mean diameter of bed material was increased and the standard deviation was decreased. The vertical sorting of bed materials composed of mixed sediment in the sediment box was observed. The surface layer was composed of gravels, and uniform sand material was buried below it. Relative fractions (Di/D50) of the bed material trapped in the box was nearly 1.0 for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo gauging station, and was between two values on the bed surface before and after the flushing flow at Bugang gauging station. Ratio of driving force to resisting force for each fraction ($\tau_i^*$) with the faction size maintained constant for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo station. At Bugang station, however, it was rapidly decreased. It means that pavement of the surface layer of bed material at Bugang station was developed, with the sediment particles moving downstream uniformly by flushing flow.
Detailed flow analysis in river is essential to increase the accuracy of water quality simulation since flow variation depends on many factors such as cross sections, channel slopes, and bed materials. In the QUAL2E stream water quality simulation model, the hydraulic coefficients are assigned to the reach that is collection of computational element using the hydraulic coefficient. This study developed a module that can incorporate the results of non-uniform flow analysis and assign such information to each individual element. Model application focused on the upstream of the Hoengseong reservoir including the reservoir where significant flow change is expected. Comparing with original QUAL2E model the developed module improved the result of water quality simulation without considering the relation of flow velocity and flow depth in terms of flow rates.
This paper presents a new and simple technique to perform MUSCL reconstruction for solving 2D shallow water equations. The modified MUSCL scheme uses weighted area ratio to apply non-uniform grid in stead of the previous method that equally distributed the difference of conservation variables to each interface. The suggested method can physically reconstruct conservation variables in case of uniform grid as well as non-uniform grid. In this study, Unsplit scheme applicable to unstructured grid is used and efficient slope limiter of TVD scheme is used to control numerical oscillation which can be occurred in modified MUSCL scheme. For accurate and efficient treatment of bed slope term, the modified MUSCL scheme is coupled with the surface gradient method. The finite volume model applied to suggested scheme is verified through a comparison between numerical solution and laboratory measurements data such as the simulations of isolated building test case and Bellos's dam break test case.

Shear stress is one of the most important mechanical factors used in various fields and is important for the design of artificial channels. Current shear stresses have been used in the past, but there are factors that are difficult to actually measure or calculate, such as bed shear stress and energy slope in the equation used. In particular, the energy slope is a very difficult factor to estimate, and it is difficult to estimate the slope and flow velocity of the boundary layer although the energy slope can be used to obtain the shear stress distribution. In addition, the bed shear stress among the shear stress distribution is very difficult to measure directly, and the research is somewhat slower than the velocity. In this study, we have studied the simple calculation of the average flow velocity and the shear stress distribution using entropy M without reflecting the energy gradient, and we used existing laboratory data to demonstrate the utility of the applied equation. The stress distribution in the graphs was comparatively analyzed. In the case of the uniform flow and the non-uniform flow, the correlation coefficient was almost identical to 0.930-0.998.

With the increasing environmental consideration and stricter regulations, gasification of waste is considered to be more attractive technology than conventional incineration for energy recovery as well as material recycling. The experiment for combustible waste mixed with plastic and cellulosic materials was performed in the fixed bed gasifier to investigate the gasification behavior with the operating conditions. Waste pelletized with a diameter of 2~3cm and 5cm of length was gasified at the temperature range of 1100~145$0^{\circ}C$. It was shown that the composition of H$_2$ was in the range of 30~40% and CO 15~30% depending upon oxygen/waste ratio. Casification of waste due to thermoplastic property from mixed plastic melting and thermal cracking shows a prominent difference from that of coal or coke. It was desirable to maintain the top temperature up to foot to ensure the mass transfer and uniform reaction through the packed bed. As the bed height was increased, the formation of H$_2$ and CO was increased whilst $CO_2$ decreased by the char-$CO_2$ reaction and plastic cracking. From the experimental results, the cold gas efficiency was around 61% and heating values of product gases were in the range of 2800~3200㎉/Nm3.
In this paper, a new approach using a pixel-based correction method was developed to fix the non-uniform responses of flat-bed type scanners used for radiochromic film dosimetry. In order to validate the method's performance, two cases were tested: the first consisted of simple dose distributions delivered by a single port; the second was a complicated dose distribution composed of multiple beams. In the case of the simple individual dose condition, ten different doses, from 8.3 cGy to 307.1 cGy, were measured, horizontal profiles were analyzed using the pixel-based correcton method and compared with results measured by an ionization chamber and results corrected using the existing correction method. A complicated inverse pyramid dose distribution was made by piling up four different field shapes, which were measured with GAFCHROMIC$^{(R)}$EBT film and compared with the Monte Carlo calculation; as well as the dose distribution corrected using a conventional method. The results showed that a pixel-based correction method reduced dose difference from the reference measurement down to 1% in the flat dose distribution region or 2 mm in a steep dose gradient region compared to the reference data, which were ionization chamber measurement data for simple cases and the MC computed data for the complicated case, with an exception for very low doses of less than about 10 cGy in the simple case. Therefore, the pixel-based scanner correction method is expected to enhance the accuracy of GAFCHROMIC$^{(R)}$EBT film dosimetry, which is a widely used tool for two-dimensional dosimetry.

In this study, the erosional parameters for deposit beds were quantitatively estimated domestically for the first time through the erosion tests using an annular flume. Four erosion tests were carried out for the deposit beds with different consolidation structures, which were obtained by consolidating the kaolinite slurries for a given time durations. Results of erosion tests showed that the bed shear strength ${\tau}_s$ increased with the consolidation time and bed depth. The erosion rate ${\epsilon}$ was also shown to be related well with the excess shear stress ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s$ which was given by the difference between flow shear stress ${\tau}_b$ and bed shear strength ${\tau}_s$. While the logarithm of the erosion rate was linearly related with the excess shear stress as ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s{\geq}0.1N/m^2$, however, the erosion rate decreased rapidly with it when ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s{\leq}0.1N/m^2$. These erosion test results were also shown to be good enough to verify by comparing with the test results from previous studies and a new equation was suggested to describe the erosion rate more well in the region of ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s{\leq}0.1N/m^2$.
The results of an experimental investigation on the co-firing characteristics and slagging behavior of dried and hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge, sub-bituminous coal, and wood pellet in a fluidized bed were presented. Combustion tests were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed system at the uniform fuel-air equivalence ratio, air flow rate, and initial bed temperature to measure bed temperature distribution and combustion gas composition. 4 different fuel blending cases were prepared by mixing sewage sludge fuels with coal and wood pellet with the ratio of 50 : 50 by the heating value. $NO_x$ was mostly NO than $NO_2$ and measured in the range of 400 to 600 ppm in all cases. $SO_2$ was considered to be affected mostly by the sulfur content of the sewage sludge fuels. The cases of hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge mixture showed slightly less $SO_2$ emission but higher fuel-N conversion than the dried sewage sludge mixing cases. The result of fly ash composition analysis implied that the sewage sludge fuels would increase the possibility of slagging/fouling considering the contents of alkali species, such as Na, K, P. Between the two different sewage sludge fuels, dried sewage sludge fuel was expected to have the more severe impact on slagging/fouling behavior than hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge fuel.
The captopril microcapsules were prepared and were investigated by measuring their size distribution using Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and dissolution of captopril. Cetyl alcohol microcapsules prepared by emulsion melted-cooled method with various ratios of drug to cetyl alcohol were spherical and uniform. The release rate of cetyl alcohol microcapsules was decreased proportionally as the content of cetyl alcohol increased but, the particle size of microcapsules was increased. The surface of cetyl alcohol microcapsules was comparatively rough as drug content increased. Pellet type microcapsules were prepared using fluidized-bed coating system by spraying captopril solution on nonpareil-seeds followed by applying $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ RS solution containing propylene glycol as a plasticizer. The release rate of drug from pellet type microcapsules decreased as the content of $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ RS increased.
