The uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus of intact rocks are the most important analytical parameters for design of rock mass structures. But the preparation of the samples for uniaxial compressive test is a hard and time consuming task. By using ultrasonic test, engineers can predict the analytical parameters that is the uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. The uniaxial compressive test and ultrasonic test were carried out 115 samples of igneous rocks, 74 samples of metamorphic rocks and 55 samples of sedimentary rocks and, after regression analysis of the test results, best fit equations for predicting the uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus are proposed. In order to obtain a better correlations coefficient between uniaxial compressive strength and P-wave velocity, the P-wave velocity were multiplied by density values. The proposed equations for predicting uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus using ultrasonic test provide reliable results.
Accurate estimation of the uniaxial compressive strength of rock is very crucial for the safety of construction activities occurring in the rock mass. However, the uniaxial compressive strength test is expensive and time consuming. Moreover, the uniaxial compressive strength test cannot be performed in the field. In order to solve this kind of problem, many foreign researchers investigated the use of the point load strength test for the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength of rock. However, the result of research obtained for rocks from other countries may not be directly applicable for rocks in Korea. The correlation between the point load strength index and the uniaxial compressive strength for rocks in Korea is suggested in the form of table by using the results of the extensive literature reviews and laboratory tests. The suggested result is expected to be used for the simple and quick estimation of uniaxial compressive strength of rocks in Korea.

Uniaxial tensile test are generally much simpler than uniaxial compressive test. Uniaxial compressive test is experimentally more difficult because of the low buckling resistance of a sheet of paper. In order to avoid buckling, many researchers have applied various lateral restraint techniques to investigate paper uniaxial compression behavior. Adding unnecessary force to inhibit compressive deformation of the sheet is unwanted, but sufficient force must be used to inhibit buckling. This study has been carried out to develop new uniaxial compressive standard test method without exerting unnecessary force to paper specimen to prevent buckling.
Eighteen biotite granites on Andong area and twenty seven igneous rocks(diorite, granite, andesite, rhyolite) on Yeosu area were tested to evaluate the correlations between the uniaxial compressive strength values, as determined by the standard uniaxial compression test, and the corresponding results of the ultrasonic velocity. The variability of test results for each test was evaluated by calculating the coefficient of determination or variation. Results indicate that strong correlations exist between the results of uniaxial compression vs the point load, Schmidt hammer and ultrasonic velocity test. The correlation equations for predicting compressive strength using different methods are presented along with their confidence limits. Ultrasonic velocity test used provide reliable estimates of compressive strength.
To investigate the engineering properties of basalt in Cheju Island, rock samples of Pyosenri basalt, trachy-basalt and scoria were taken from Seoguipo-Si Seongsan-Eup area. The laboratory tests such as absorption test, specific gravity test, permeability test, Schmidt hammer test, elastic wave test and uniaxial compressive testwere carried out for the collected rock samples. The absorption, the specific gravity, the permeability, the elastic wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strengthwere investigated and analyzed as the results of these tests. As the result of regression analysis for the relationship between the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test and the uniaxial compressive strengths from uniaxial compressive test, especially, estimation equations were proposed using the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test. Therefore, the simple method to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength was provided.
Little attention has been paid to Brazilian test for the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rocks as an indirect method despite high availability of civil engineering parameters. This paper employed Brazilian test value to estimate two parameters of igneous rocks (granite, andesite, rhyolite) of Korea. High reliability of Brazilian test has been supported by the conclusions drawn from point load test and Schmidt hammer strike values. It has also been found that this method can be applied easily and rapidly to the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rock cores when direct tests are not available.
Many attempts have been made to determine the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of regular specimens of rock indirectly. But little experimental work has been done to find above two parameters using Brazilian test value up to date. This paper employs Brazilian test value to estimate uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of sedimentary (sand stone, shale) and metamorphic (gneiss) rocks. High reliability of Brazilian test has been supported by the established conclusions drawn from point load test and Schmidt hammer strike values. It has also been found that this method can be applied easily and rapidly to the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rock cores when direct tests are not available.
The point load test (PLT) is a widely-used alternative method in the field to determine the uniaxial compressive strength due to its simple testing machine and procedure. The point load test index can estimate the uniaxial compressive strength through conversion factors based on the rock types. However, the mechanism correlating these two parameters and the influence of the mechanical properties on PLT results are still not well understood. This study proposed a theoretical model to understand the mechanism of PLT serving as an alternative to the UCS test based on laboratory observation and literature survey. This model found that the point load test is a self-confined compression test. There is a compressive ellipsoid near the loading axis, whose dilation forms a tensile ring that provides confinement on this ellipsoid. The peak load of a point load test is linearly positive correlated to the tensile strength and negatively correlated to the Poisson ratio. The model was then verified using numerical and experimental approaches. In numerical verification, the PLT discs were simulated using flat-joint BPM of PFC3D to model the force distribution, crack propagation and BPM properties' effect with calibrated micro-parameters from laboratory UCS test and point load test of Berea sandstones. It further verified the mechanism experimentally by conducting a uniaxial compressive test, Brazilian test, and point load test on four different rocks. The findings from this study can explain the mechanism and improve the understanding of point load in determining uniaxial compressive strength.
PURPOSES : It is to evaluate lightweight soil as a subgrade material based on mechanical tests and calculation of pavement performance. METHODS : In this research, various contents of cement and air foam are used to make lightweight soil using wasted dredged soil. Uniaxial compressive strength test is conducted to evaluate strength of 7 and 28 day cured specimens. Secant modulus was calculated based on the stress and strain relationship of uniaxial compressive strength test. Resilient modulus test was measured using by repeated triaxial compression test. The measured resilient modulus was used in layered elastic program to predict fatigue and rutting life at a given pavement structure. RESULTS : Uniaxial compressive strength increases as cement content increases but decrease as air foam content increases. Resilient modulus also increases as cement content increases and decrease as air foam content decrease. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that dredge clay soil can be used as subgrade layer material using by lightweight treated soil method.
In an uniaxial compressive test of a concrete standard specimen (150$\times$300 mm) the crack initiation and extension with the stress increase are the major reason of the failure, which is similar to the breakage of the particle bonding in the simulation by using particle bonded model, especially particle flow code in 3 dimensions (PFC3D) developed by Itasca Consulting Group Inc. That is the main motive to study the possibility of an uniaxial compressive strength test simulation. It is important to investigate the relationship between the micro-parameters and the macro-properties because the 3-dimensional particle bonded model uses the spherical particles to analyze the physical phenomena. Contact bonded model used herein has eight micro-parameters and there are five macro-properties; Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, uniaxial compressive strength and the crack initiation stress and the ratio concerning the crack propagation with the stress. To simulate the compressive test we made quantitative relationships between the micro-parameters and the macro-properties by using the fractional factorial design and various sensitivity analyses including regression analysis, which result in the good agreement with the previous studies. Also, the stress-stain curve and the crack distribution over the specimen given by PFC3D showed the mechanical behavior of the concrete standard specimen under the uniaxial compression. It is concluded that the particle bonded model can be a good tool for the analyzing the mechanical behavior of concrete under the uniaxial compressive load.
