  • PURPOSES : It is to evaluate lightweight soil as a subgrade material based on mechanical tests and calculation of pavement performance. METHODS : In this research, various contents of cement and air foam are used to make lightweight soil using wasted dredged soil. Uniaxial compressive strength test is conducted to evaluate strength of 7 and 28 day cured specimens. Secant modulus was calculated based on the stress and strain relationship of uniaxial compressive strength test. Resilient modulus test was measured using by repeated triaxial compression test. The measured resilient modulus was used in layered elastic program to predict fatigue and rutting life at a given pavement structure. RESULTS : Uniaxial compressive strength increases as cement content increases but decrease as air foam content increases. Resilient modulus also increases as cement content increases and decrease as air foam content decrease. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that dredge clay soil can be used as subgrade layer material using by lightweight treated soil method.

  • We carried out NPT-ensemble (constant-number of particles, pressure, and temperature) Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations for measuring strength anisotropy under uniaxial compressive stress rotated to the crystallographic axes in $\alpha$-quartz. Uniaxial compressive strengths of a single quartz crystal were measured in directions of the a- and c-axis. Measured uniaxial strength of a single quartz crystal was higher in the direction parallel to the c-axis than that measured in the direction normal to the c-axis. However the reverse was found in calculated uniaxial strengths by MD simulation. The contradictive result of strengths was observed in both cases but was found to be different in origin. Strength anisotropy of defectless $\alpha$-quartz crystal in MD simulation is basically caused by structural difference of quartz. By contrast, anisotropy of measured strength in the uniaxial compression test is related to oriented micro-defects developed during crystal growth.

  • Constructions on the soft clay layer of low strength and high compression bring out many problems. Recent studies show that strength of the soft clay layer could be substantially improved by mixing quicklime. For the purpose, a series of uniaxial compression tests were performed, using quicklime, in order to analyze strength characteristics. The major test results are summarized following : When water content is 90%, the strength is observed to precipitously increase between 3~14 days, then, the extent slowly increase in relative terms. When water content is 130%, the strength is observed to precipitously increase up to 28 days. When the strength of water content 90% is compared to that of water content 130%, the initial strength of the former is higher than that of the latter. The analyses show that the improvement of soft clay layers can be realized by the mixture of both quicklime and sand, and by the mixture of quicklime only.

  • The hazard warning levels are necessary for the rational design and safety construction of underground space, as mountain and urban tunnel. Sakurai provided the hazard warning levels for assessing the stability of tunnels using the critical strain of rock mass, which is defined as a ratio between uni-axial compressive strength and the Young's modulus. The concept of critical strain guidelines is introduced in this study for the assessment of tunnel safety during excavation. Moreover, in this paper, the critical strain properties of sedimentary rock in Korea has investigated and analysed in detail by Lab. test, as the uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. Finally, critical strain properties of sedimentary rock on uniaxial and triaxial stress condition is discussed the relationship of failure strain values, uniaxial and triaxial compression strengths, confining pressure and Young's modulus.

  • The damage or failure of coal rock is accompanied by energy accumulation, dissipation and release. It is crucial to study the energy evolution characteristics of coal rock for rock mechanics and mining engineering applications. In this paper, coal specimens sourced from the Xinhe mine located in the Jining mining area of China were initially subjected to uniaxial compression, and the micro-parameters of the two-dimensional particle flow code (PFC2D) model were calibrated according to the experimental test results. Then, the PFC2D model was used to subject the specimens to substantial uniaxial compression, and the energy evolution laws of coal specimens with various schemes were presented. Finally, the elastic energy storage ratio m was investigated for coal rock, which described the energy conversion in coal specimens with various arrangements of preformed holes. The arrangement of the preformed holes significantly influenced the characteristics of the crack initiation stress and energy in the prepeak stage, whereas the characteristics of the cumulative crack number, failure pattern and elastic strain energy during the loading process were similar. Additionally, the arrangement of the preformed holes altered the proportion of elastic strain energy Ue in the total energy in the prepeak stage, and the probability of rock bursts can be qualitatively predicted.

  • The applicability and performance of HMS-25 as the railroad roadbed materials were evaluated through the model and laboratory tests. The uniaxial compression test of HMS-25, model soil box test, and combined resonant column and torsional shear test were performed for static and dynamic analysis of railroad roadbed. The uniaxial compression test result of HMS-25 shows steady increase in strength due to hardening chemical reaction between HMS-25 and water. The result of model soil box test reveals that railroad roadbed of HMS-25 is better than that of soil in several aspects such as bearing capacity and settlement. The combined resonant column and torsional that shear test result indicates that shear modulus of HMS-25 increases with the power of 0.5 to the confining pressure and that shear modulus increases with the increase of curing period.

  • LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) algorithm which is a kind of recurrent neural network was used to establish a model to predict the stress-strain curve of an material under uniaxial compression. The model was established from the stress-strain data from uniaxial compression tests of silica-gypsum specimens. After training the model, it can predict the behavior of the material up to the failure state by using an early stage of stress-strain curve whose stress is very low. Because the LSTM neural network predict a value by using the previous state of data and proceed forward step by step, a higher error was found at the prediction of higher stress state due to the accumulation of error. However, this model generally predict the stress-strain curve with high accuracy. The accuracy of both LSTM and tangential prediction models increased with increased length of input data, while a difference in performance between them decreased as the amount of input data increased. LSTM model showed relatively superior performance to the tangential prediction when only few input data was given, which enhanced the necessity for application of the model.

  • It is very important to determine the thermo-mechanical characteristics of the rock mass surrounding the repository of radioctive waste and the LPG storage cavern. In this study, Hwasoon-Shist. Dado-Tuff adn Chunan-Tonalite were the selected rock types. Temperature dependence of the mechanical properteis such as uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, Young's modulus was investigated by measuring the behaviour of these properties due to the variation of temperature. Also, the characteristics of strength and deformation of these rocks were examined through high-temperature triaxial compression tests with varing temperatures and confining pressures. Important results obtained are as follows: In high temperature tests, the uniaxial compressive strength and Yong's modulus of Tonalite showed a sligth increase at a temperature up to 300$^{\circ}C$ and a sharp decrease beyond 300$^{\circ}C$, and the tensile strength showed a linear decrease with increasing heating-temperature. In high-temperature triaxial compression test, both the failure stress and Young's modulus of Tonalite increased with the increase of confining pressure at constant heating-temperature, and the failure stress decreased at 100$^{\circ}C$ but increased at 200$^{\circ}C$ under a constant confining pressure. In low temperature tests, the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths and Young's modulus of these rocks increased as the cooling-temperature is reduced. Also, the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths of wet rock specimens are less than those of dry rock specimens.

  • External confinement by CFS (Carbon Fiber Sheet) is a very effective retrofit method for the reinforced concrete columns subject to either static or seismic loads. For the reliable and cost-effective design of CFS, an accurate stress-strain curve is required for CFS-confined concrete. In this paper, uniaxial compression test on short RC column with circular section was performed. To evaluate the effect of confinement on the stress-strain relationship of CFS-confined concrete, CFS area ratio, spiral area ratio, and concrete compressive strength are considered as the test variables. Experiment results indicate that CFS jacketing significantly enhances strength and ductility of concrete. In addition, the CFS-jacketed specimens with the spiral steel show the lower load increasement ratio than those without the spiral steel.

  • Spring-back of MS1470 steel sheets was numerically predicted using a non-linear kinematic hardening material behavior based on the Yoshida-Uemori model. From uniaxial tension and uniaxial tension-compression-tension data as well as the uniaxial tension-unloading-tension data, the parameters of the Yoshida-Uemori model were obtained. For the numerical simulations, the Yoshida-Uemori model was implemented into the commercial finite element program, ABAQUS/Explicit and ABAQUS/Standard using the user-defined material subroutines. The model performance was validated against the measured spring-back from the benchmark problems of NUMISHEET 2008 and NUMISHEET 2011, the 2-D draw bending test and the S-rail forming test, respectively.
