Passive sonar signal classification using graph neural network based on image patch (영상 패치 기반 그래프 신경망을 이용한 수동소나 신호분류)

  • We propose a passive sonar signal classification algorithm using Graph Neural Network (GNN). The proposed algorithm segments spectrograms into image patches and represents graphs through connections between adjacent image patches. Subsequently, Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) is trained using the represented graphs to classify signals. In experiments with publicly available underwater acoustic data, the proposed algorithm represents the line frequency features of spectrograms in graph form, achieving an impressive classification accuracy of 92.50 %. This result demonstrates a 8.15 % higher classification accuracy compared to conventional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).

  • In image processing and robotic applications, two-dimensional (2D) black and white patterned planar markers are widely used. However, these markers are not detectable in low visibility environment and they are not changeable. This research proposes an active and adaptive marker node, which displays 2D marker patterns using light emitting diode (LED) arrays for easier recognition in the foggy or turbid underwater environments. Because each node is made to blink at a different frequency, active LED marker nodes were distinguishable from each other from a long distance without increasing the size of the marker. We expect that the proposed system can be used in various harsh conditions where the conventional marker systems are not applicable because of low visibility issues. The proposed system is still compatible with the conventional marker as the displayed patterns are identical.

  • A side scan sonar system uses the towfish installed sonars, It is an equipment that search images of the bottom surface of the sea in real time. It is a typical equipment that is related to a sea investigation such as a geological survey, seabed communication cable and power line cable placing repair investigation, fish breeding ground investigation, sea purification, relic and mineral investigation, and mine and submarine search. It used to fined objects and investigate on the seabed surface. But, recently, it is used to sea purification and geological survey that require information of the correct surface of the seabed. So, it needs various filtering technique and image processing techniques development to acquire high resolution image. therefore, this research develops a side scan sonar using multi-beam sensors that supply various information with the fast scan speed and correct high resolution that is not a simple underwater investigation equipment.

  • The analysis of plankton species distribution in sea or fresh water is very important in preserving marine ecosystem health. Since manual analysis is infeasible, many automatic approaches were proposed. They usually use images from in situ towed underwater imaging sensor or specially designed, lab mounted microscopic imaging system. Normally they assume that only single plankton is present in an image so that, if there is a clumping among multiple plankton of same species (homogeneous clumping) or if there are multiple plankton of different species scattered in an image (heterogeneous interspersion), they have a difficulty in recognition. In this work, we propose a deep learning based method that can detect and recognize individual plankton in images with homogeneous clumping, heterogeneous interspersion, or combination of both.

  • As a propellant of a high speed underwater vehicle, the hydro-reactive solid metal particles using seawater as a oxidizer maximizes its specific impulse when the solid metal particles and the seawater are uniformly mixed in the combustion chamber. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of injector geometry on the particle distribution of similarity point of view. For the purpose of this similarity of the mean velocity and particle number density along the radial direction was measured by Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV).

  • Test uncertainty of a towed underwater Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system was assessed in a towing tank. To estimate the systematic error and random error of mean velocity and turbulence properties measurement, velocity field of uniform flow was measured. Total uncertainty of the axial component of mean velocity was 1.45% of the uniform flow speed and total uncertainty of turbulence properties was 3.03%. Besides, variation of particle displacement was applied to identify the change of error distribution. In results for variation of particle displacement, the error rapidly increases with particle movement under one pixel. In addition, a nominal wake of a model ship was measured and compared with existing experimental data by five-hole Pitot tubes, Pitot-static tube, and hot wire anemometer. For mean velocity, small local vortex was identified with high spatial resolution of SPIV, but has serious disagreement in local maxima of turbulence properties due to limited sampling rate.

Image Analysis of Typhoon Impacts on Soft Coral Community at Munseom in Jeju, Korea (제주도 문섬 조하대에 서식하는 연산호군락의 태풍에 의한 영향 분석)

  • Impacts of Typhoon Maemi on a soft-coral community located on subtidal cliff at Munseom, Jeju were investigated in this study using underwater photography. Typhoon Maemi hit Jeju Island in late September 2003 and its impact was strong enough to destruct most shallow water sessile benthos including soft corals. To estimate numbers and size of soft-coral colonies, a line transect was installed on the cliff at depth from 3 to 9 m and photographs were taken serially by every 1m. From each $1{\times}1m$ underwater photograph, species and size of soft-coral colony was determined. Number of soft-coral colony and its Percent coverage (PC) in each $1m^2$ quadrat was calculated. Soft corals Scleronephthya gracillium, Dendronephthya gigantea, D. spinulosa and D. castanea were identified from the photographs. Dendronephthya sp. was mainly distributed at 3-6m while S. gracillimum was mostly occurred at $6{sim}9m$. A survey conducted before the typhoon showed that number of the soft-coral colonies at $3{\sim}4m,\;4{\sim}5m,\;5{\sim}6m,\;6{\sim}7m,\;7{\sim}8m\;and\;8{\sim}9m$ was 17, 24, 20, 23, 18 and 30 $colonies/m^2$ or 21, 48, 36, 28, 24 and 43%, respectively. After the typhoon, number of soft-coral colonies in the transect increased, 31, 35, 21, 10, 21 and 50 $colonies/m^2$ while PC was remarkably decreased as 21, 23, 21, 5, 9 and 13%, respectively. Our data suggested that the impact was limited in larger colonies; larger soft coral colonies were selectively destroyed and removed while the small colonies underneath the larger colonies remained undestroyed.

Analysis of Performance of Focused Beamformer Using Water Pulley Model Array (수차 모형 배열을 이용한 표적추정 (Focused) 빔형성기 성능분석)

  • This paper proposes the Focused beamforming to estimate the location of target residing near to the observation platform in the underwater environment. The Focused beamforming technique provides the location of target by the coherent summation of a series of incident spherical waveforms considering distinct propagation delay times at the sensor array. But due to the movement of the observation platform and the variation of the underwater environment, the shape of the sensor array is no longer to be linear but it becomes distorted as the platform moves. Thus the Focused beamforming should be peformed regarding to the geometric shape variation at each time. To estimate the target location, the artificial image plane comprised of cells is constructed, and the delays are calculated from each cell where the target could be proximity to sensors for the coherent summation. After the coherent combining, the beam pattern can be obtained through the Focused beamforming on the image plane. Futhermore to compensate the variation of the shape of the sensor array, the paper utilizes the Nth-order polynomial approximation to estimate the shape of the sensor array obeying the water pulley modeling. Simulation results show the performance of the Focused beamforming for different frequency bands of the radiated signal.

Defect Detection of Ceramic Heating Plate Using Ultrasound Pulse Thermography (초음파 펄스 서모그라피를 이용한 세라믹 전열 판의 결함 검출)

  • The applicability of UPT (Ultrasound Pulse Thermography) for real-time defect detection of the ceramic heating plate is described. The ceramic heating plate with superior insulation and high radiation is used to control the water temperature in underwater environment. The underwater temperature control system can be damaged owing to the short circuit, which resulted from the defect of the ceramic heating plate. A high power ultrasonic energy with pulse duration of 280 ms was injected into the ceramic heating plate in the vertical direction. The ultrasound excited vibration energy sent into the component propagate inside the sample until they were converted to the heat in the vicinity of the defect. Therefore, an injection of the ultrasound pulse wave which results in heat generation, turns the defect into a local thermal wave transmitter. Its local emission is monitored and recorded via the thermal infrared camera at the surface which is processed by image recording system. Measurements were Performed on 4 kinds of samples, composed of 3 intact plates and the defect plate. The observed thermal image revealed two area of crack in the defective ceramic heating plate.
