  • Communication underwater is severely limited when compared to communications in air because water is essentially opaque to electromagnetic radiation except in visible range. Acoustic systems are capable of long range communication, but offer limited data rates and significant latency due to the speed of sound in water. On the other hand, optical wireless communication has been proposed as one of the best alternatives to meet the requirements of the underwater observation and subsea monitoring systems. It will help In this study, we are developing an underwater optical communication system that integrates with a depot ship floating on the water. An interface between LED lighting communication system and Bluetooth module is presented to support the underwater-to-air communications. Error free image and text transmission at 3 m of water were achieved at bit rates of 230.4 kbps. This development effort will enhance infrastructure to efficiently interconnect between underwater wireless systems and command ship networks for underwater monitoring.

  • The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), the ocean engineering branch of KORDI, has designed and manufactured a model of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to test underwater docking. This paper introduces the AUV model, ASUM, equipped with a visual servo control system to dock into an underwater station with a camera and motion sensors. To make a visual servoing AUV, this paper implemented the visual servo control system designed with an augmented state equation, which was composed of the optical flow model of a camera and the equation of the AUV's motion. The system design and the hardware configuration of ASUM are presented in this paper. A small long baseline acoustic positioning system was developed to monitor and record the AUV's position for the experiment in the Ocean Engineering Basin of KRISO, KORDI. ASUM recognizes the target position by processing the captured image for the lights, which are installed around the end of the cone-type entrance of the duct. Unfortunately, experiments are not yet conducted when we write this article. The authors will present the results for the docking test of the AUV in near future.

  • Recently, the necessity of underwater acoustic communication and demand for transmitting and receiving various data such as voice or high resolution image data are increasing as well. The performance of underwater acoustic communication system is influenced by underwater channel characteristic. Especially, a delay spread caused by reverberation and multi-path induces the ISI (Inter-Symbol-Interference) and reduces the communication performance. In this paper, we study the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique for robust the delay spread in underwater channel. We also use the clipping method to overcome the performance degradation in high PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio). We confirm the performances of underwater communication system by the underwater channel model simulation model and experiment in small water tank. As a result, the multi-carrier modulation with clipping method presented low BER and the previous single carrier modulation had high BER.

  • This paper deals with an analysis of multipath which affect a transmission performance in underwater acoustic channel. Underwater acoustic channel with multipath structure is introduced to mathematical modelling for a basin environment. In this paper, SMR(Signal to Multipath Ratio) which is defined as a parameter of multipath's effect is presented as a mathematical equation, and the equation of SMR is simulated by MATLAB program. Furthermore, this paper is also dealt with an implementation of modulation and demodulation system for acoustic transmission Acoustic Transmission is limited by frequency bandwidth so $\pi$/4 Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) methods which is very useful at frequency limitation and FM(Frequency Modulation) are used at acoustic communication system. This implemented hybrid modulation/demodulation system is used as an analog board of image transmission system

  • In this study, the characteristics of Ultrasonic Transducer fabricated with PZT-Polymer 1-3 type piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composite are investigated. 3-D underwater object restoration using the self-made ultrasonic transducer and modified SCL(Simple Competitive Learning) neural network was presented. The ultrasonic transducer was satisfied with the required condition of commerical ultrasonic transducer in underwater. The modified SCL neural network using the acquired object data $16\times16$ low resolution image was used for object restoration of $32\times32$ high resolution image. The experimental results have shown that the ultrasonic transducer fabricated with PZT-Polymer 1-3 type piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composite could be applied for SONAR system.

  • This study performed three research methods (destructive, non-destructive, and panoramic image analysis) to determine the most useful for identifying seaweed habitat characteristics. Panoramic images are suitable for understanding the overall seaweed distribution. The composition of the main dominant seaweed species showed a significant difference between the destructive and non-destructive methods using Quadrat. The destructive method showed Rhodophyta dominance, whereas the non-destructive was showed Phaeophyta as dominant. Destructive methods are disadvantageous because they destroy natural communities in sea areas where bleaching is severe. Non-destructive methods are disadvantageous because of the difficulty in analyzing small species. Performing 10 surveys using a non-destructive method was found to explain up to 80% of the species identified by the destructive method. However, considering the difficulty of field investigation, repeating the investigation with non-destructive methods at least 6-7 times is necessary to ensure that more than 60% of the destructive methods can be interpreted. To understand the distribution of oceanic marine algae, performing both destructive and non-destructive surveys are necessary, as each has its own merits and demerits.

  • With the growing importance of the fishery industry and the rapid growth of the aquaculture industry, research on smart farms through ICT convergence in the aquaculture field is in progress. To enable monitoring of the growing environment at the farm site, an underwater drone drive unit, an image collection device, an integrated controller for posture stabilization, and a remote control device capable of controlling and controlling drones through real-time underwater images were proposed, and design, development, and tests were conducted. By utilizing underwater drones, it is possible to replace the supply and demand of manpower and high-cost work in the aquaculture industry, and to manage fish farms in a stable manner by reducing the probability of farming deaths.

  • This paper deals with the design techniques for underwater acoustic basin. An underwater acoustic basin is needed for test and calibration of acoustic sensors, acoustic digital communication system, acoustic measurement system, and underwater image data telemetry system. KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) have planned the construction of an underwater acoustic tank from 1999 to 2001 through internal project. We studied about absorbtion characteristics of a porous re-cycled rubber which is selected as a absorption materials and designed absorption plate with wedge shape. The simulation of reflection analysis along the wedge angle for wedged type plate was presented.

  • Exploration has always been an instinct of humans, and underwater life is as fascinating as it seems. So, for studying flora and fauna below water, there is a need for high-quality images. However, the underwater images tend to be of impaired quality due to various factors, which calls for improved and enhanced underwater images. There are various Histogram Equalization (HE) based techniques which could aid in solving these issues. Classifying the HE methods broadly, there is Global Histogram Equalization (GHE), Mean Brightness Preserving HE (MBPHE), Bin Modified HE (BMHE), and Local HE (LHE). Each of these HE extensions have their own pros and cons and thus, by considering them we have considered BBHE, CLAHE, BPDHE, BPDFHE, and DSIHE enhancement algorithms, which are based on Mean Brightness Preserving HE and Local HE, for this study. The performance is evaluated with non-reference performance measures like Entropy, UCIQE, UICM, and UIQM. In this study, we apply the enhancement algorithms on 300 images from the UIEB benchmark dataset and then apply the techniques of cascading fusion on the best-performing algorithms.
