  • Recently, as the needs of developing the micro autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) are increasing, the acquisition of the elementary technology is urgent. While they mostly utilizes information of the forward looking sonar (FLS) in conventional studies of the local path control as an elementary technology, it is desirable to use the obstacle avoidance sonar (OAS) because the size of the FLS is not suitable for the micro AUV. In brief, the local path control system based on the OAS for the micro AUV operates with the following problems: the OAS offers low bearing resolution and local range information, it requires the system that has reduced power consumption to extend the mission execution time, and it requires an easy design procedure in terms of its structures and parameters. To solve these problems, an intelligent local path control algorithm based on the beam modeling of OAS with the evolution strategy (ES) and the fuzzy logic controller (FLC), is proposed. To verify the performance and analyze the characteristic of the proposed algorithm, the course control of the underwater flight vehicle (UFV) is performed in the horizontal plane. Simulation results show that the feasibility of real application and the necessity of additional work in the proposed algorithm.

  • Applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and the time varying nature of their navigation, guidance and control systems motivate an integrated approach to trajectory general ion and trajectory tracking for autonomous vehicles. In this paper, an experimental testbed was designed for studying this integrated trajectory control approach. In this paper we apply the separating approach to an autonomous nonlinear vehicle system. A new linear matrix inequality based H$_{\infty}$ control technique for periodic time-varying systems is applied to the role of trajectory tracking. Trajectory general ion is accomplished by exploit ing the differential flatness property of the vehicle system; this at lows product ion of desired feasible nominal or reference trajectories from certain ″flat'system outputs. Simulation and experimental results are presented showing stable tracking of a periodic circular trajectory.

  • In this paper, an estimator design of underwater environment changes is proposed by using observer techniques for ROV control system. The underwater environment changes are considered as an external disturbance term for ROV model and it is added into the input term of ROV model. To estimate the environment changes, a PI observer which does not effect the external disturbance input term is proposed. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the step and the sinusoidal environment changes are considered in simulation. The proposed method will be applied to design the haptic controller for ROV in future.

  • This paper describes an approach to a speed estimation method to remove speed sensor of underwater robot's AC drive systems. AC motors have been widely used in the field of underwater robot's manipulator or propulsion system. Most of these AC motors for underwater use have usually filled oil to compensate the high pressure in deep-sea operation, where a resolver is adopted to feed back the speed of rotor But this kind of speed feedback devices gives rise to some defects arising from their mechanical complexity and numerous signal lines; a resolver needs 6 or 7 signal lines for proper operation. This paper presents a speed estimation method to improve these problems of induction motor, which is adopted as a prototype of AC motor. The proposed speed estimation method is based on the RFO(rotor flux orientation) vector control method of voltage-fed AC drives. Using the controller of voltage-fed AC drives, it is unnecessary to measure the voltage for the estimation of rotor speed, which reduces the effects of measurement error Numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the validity of the method and the effects of rotors resistance variation.

  • This paper describes the design and development of a hovering AUV constructed at Cheju National University and analyses the dynamic performance of the vehicle using simulation programs. The main purpose of this AUV is to carry out fundamental tests in its station keeping, attitude control, and desired position tracking. Its configuration is similar to the general ROV appearance for underwater works and its dimensions are 0.75m*0.5m*0.5m. It has 4 thrusters of 450 watts for longitudinal/lateral/vertical propulsion and is equipped with a pressure sensor for measuring water depth and a magnetic compass for measuring heading angle. The navigation of the vehicle is controlled by an on-board Pentium III-class computer, which runs with the help of the Windows XP operating system. These give us an appropriate environment for developing various algorithms needed for developing and advancing Hovering AUV.

  • In this paper, the robust controller design is performed for the speed control of the underwater vehicle diesel engine. Nonlinear model equations are acquired through the mathematical modeling using mean torque production model technique. It is very difficult to design the robust controller because those are high nonlinear and not expressed in terms of the matched uncertainty Therefore those are converted into the separable model into the linear nominal system and the nonlinear uncertainty term.

  • In the nuclear power plant, there are several cylindrical vessels such as reactor vessel, pressuriser and so on. The vessels are usually constructed by welding large rolled plates, forged sections or nozzle pipes together. In order to assure the integrity of the vessel, these welds should be periodically inspected using sensors such as ultrasonic transducer or visual cameras. This inspection is usually conducted under water to minimize exposure to the radioactively contaminated vessel walls. The inspections have been performed by using a conventional inspection machine with a big structural sturdy column, however, it is so huge and heavy that maintenance and handling of the machine are extremely difficult. It requires much effort to transport the system to the site and also requires continuous use of the utility's polar crane to move the manipulator into the building and then onto the vessel. Setup beside the vessel requires a large volume of work preparation area and several shifts to complete. In order to resolve these problems, we have developed an underwater mobile robot guided by the laser pointer, and performed a series of experiments both in the mockup and in the real reactor vessel. This paper introduces our robotic inspection system and the laser guidance of the mobile robot as well as the results of the functional test.

  • -In recent years, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) have been vigorously developed, and with the continuous deepening of marine exploration, traditional energy can no longer meet the energy supply. Nuclear energy can achieve a huge and sustainable energy supply. The heat pipe reactor has no flow system and related auxiliary systems, and the supporting mechanical moving parts are greatly reduced, the noise is relatively small, and the system is simpler and more reliable. It is more favorable for the control of unmanned systems. The use of heat pipe reactors in unmanned underwater vehicles can meet the needs for highly compact, long-life, unmanned, highly reliable, ultra-quiet power supplies. In this paper, a heat pipe reactor scheme named UPR-S that can be applied to unmanned underwater vehicles is designed. The reactor core can provide 1 MW of thermal power, and it can operate at full power for 5 years. UPR-S has negative reactive feedback, it has inherent safety. The temperature and stress of the reactor are within the limits of the material, and the core safety can still be guaranteed when the two heat pipes are failed.

  • This paper presents a design technique of a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy-model-based $H_{\infty}$ controller for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The design procedure aims to render the stabilizing controller which satisfies performance of the diving control for AUVs in the presence of the disturbance. A nonlinear AUV is modeled by the T-S fuzzy system through the sector nonlinearity. By using Lyapunov function, the sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the performance of robust depth control in the format of linear matrix inequality (LMI). To succeed for diving control of AUV, we add the constraints on the diving and pitch angles in the LMI conditions. Through the simulation, we confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

  • UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle) should possess an intelligent control software performing intellectual faculties such as cognition, decision and action which are parts of domain expert's ability, because unmanned underwater robot navigates in the hazardous environment where human being can not access directly. In this paper, we suggest a RVC intelligent system architecture which is generally available for unmanned vehicle and develope an autonomous navigation system for UUV, which consists of collision avoidance system, path planning system, and collision-risk computation system. We present an obstacle avoidance algorithm using fuzzy relational products for the collision avoidance system, which guarantees the safety and optimality in view of traversing path. Also, we present a new path-planning algorithm using poly-line for the path planning system. In order to verify the performance of suggested autonomous navigation system, we develop a simulation system, which consists of environment manager, object, and 3-D viewer.
