Purpose: This study was done to analyze and clarify the concept of empathy in nursing. Methods: Using the concept analysis framework of Walker & Avant 68 articles about empathy were selected for this study. Results: Defining attributes of empathy included recognizing others' perspective and thought, understanding others' emotion, and communicating with them. The antecedents of empathy included contact with patients, respect and trust for patients, a certain level of cognitive ability, and communication skills. Consequences of empathy were increasing patient self-understanding, self-awareness as a therapeutic subject and improving quality of nursing. The concept was clarified through presentation of model, borderline, related, and contrary cases. Conclusion: The results of this study are meaningful in that the concept and attributes of empathy are explored in the area of nursing. Also, based on results of this study, development of standardized tools to measure patient-perceived empathy and measure the three attributes of empathy is recommended as well as the development of educational programs to enhance empathy.

This study discussed the major notion of backward design placing emphasis on performance and evaluation, and clarified the concepts of 'understanding' and 'enduring understanding' based on the literature of Wiggins and McTighe and previous studies. This study also developed a sample curriculum module for a consumer unit for 7 class hours based on the 'Understanding by Design' template. This study concluded that backward design can contribute to achieving student's high performance from evaluation planning prior to actual instruction, to utilizing learning with higher order thinking and skills by analyzing key concepts, and to reconstructing curriculum contents considering a teacher's perspective, students' needs, and each school's situation and context.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of adolescents' media literacy, self-esteem, and cognitive related to on critical media understanding ability using data from the Korea Media Panel Survey 2020. As a result of the study, PC literacy and smart device literacy influenced adolescents' critical media literacy. The mediating effect of cognitive needs between Internet literacy and critical media understanding ability using PCs and smart devices was significant, and the mediating effect of self-esteem between email literacy using PCs and smart devices and critical media understanding ability was significant. Therefore, to improve adolescents' critical media understanding ability, it is necessary to educate them to use PCs and smart devices as tools for interaction. To this end, it is desirable for information and technology subjects to focus on media literacy to increase cognitive needs, and for other subjects, cooperative learning using media is desirable.

Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) integrated education has been spotlighted as a new approach for promoting students' conceptual understanding and supporting their future career in STEM field. There is increasing evidence of the positive impact of using a whole design process that can be an example of STEM integrated activities to improve students' conceptual understanding and problem solving skills. However, there is a lack of information on how teachers should accomplish science and engineering integration activities in their classroom and what process they should pay attention. To answer this question, we research the relationship between an design process and students' conceptual understanding using an engineering design activity, called 'Save the Penguins', and study on how each step in an engineering design process in this activity enhance students' conceptual knowledge in science. We found that testing their prototypes and discussing with their peers were the most important process for students to understand and apply science concept for their design, even though the whole engineering design process (demonstration about radiation, discussion about examples in our lives, and testing and reviewing their prototypes, and making final design) helps the students understand the scientific concepts.
This study investigated school mathematics curriculum of England, newly revised in 1998, focused on the 'number and algebra' domain among three major domains of the English curriculum. On the basis of its understanding, this domain was compared and analyzed with school mathematics curriculum of Korea. In doing so, this study explored its plans and procedures and established a frame of comparison for the curriculums between the two countries. The structure of the National Curriculum in England is composed of programmes of study and attainment targets. The former sets out what should be taught in mathematics at key stages 1, 2, 3, and 4 and provides the basis for planning schemes of work, and the latter sets out the knowledge, skills, and understanding that pupils of different abilities and matures are expected to have by the end of each key stage. Attainment targets are composed of eight levels and an additional level of increasing difficulty. According to the results of the present study, Korea focuses on the formal and systematic mathematical knowledge on the basis of sound understanding of certain mathematical terms or concepts. On the other hand, England tends to deal with numbers more flexibly and naturally through the aquisition of mental methods, calculator use methods, etc, and emphasizes that mathematics be realistic and useful in solving a diverse number of problems confronted in everyday life.
The purpose of this study was to provide analytic rubrics for measuring teamwork(PO6), communication and presentation skills(PO7), and life-long learning(PO8) based on theoretical concepts of performance assessment and rubrics. Also, this study analyzed data about performance assessment and rubics from courses offered through college of engineering. Participants were 34 senior engineering students who took the course 'Technical writing and presentation'. In the second week of the course, students were given the pre-test instrument which was developed for measuring students' understanding of program outcomes for this study. After performing project activities using rubrics, students were encouraged to complete the post-test instrument and the reaction questionnaire during the ninth week. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 14.0 and Microsoft Excel. The research findings are as follows. First, to promote and evaluate program learning outcomes appropriately, performance assessment-based on rubircs should be implemented. Second, in the reaction questionnaire about the rubircs, students answered that using rubircs for performing the project was very useful for understanding the performance procedures and assessment criteria. Third, the mean of understanding of program outcomes of students in post-test was significantly increased than in the pre-test(p<.0001). From the findings, performance assessment and rubrics should be used as evaluation tools at course levels in terms of promoting program learning outcomes for engineering education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between nurse managers' facilitative communication as perceived by nurses and nurses' self-esteem. Methods: The subjects were 256 staff nurses at B hospital of C University in Kyeonggi-do. The data were collected between December 1, 2009 and January 12, 2010. The collected data were analyzed using the SAS program through t-test, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: Nurses' self-esteem was higher when nurse managers perceived them as facilitative communicators in empathic understanding and genuineness subgroup of facilitative communication (p<.05). There was a positive correlation between nurse managers' facilitative communication and nurses' self-esteem(r=.15, p=.015). Also there was a positive correlation among the nurse managers' facilitative communication subgroups, empathic understanding; genuineness; concreteness(r=0.18, p=.004; r=0.18, p=.003; r=0.19, p=.002) and nurses' self-esteem. Conclusion: Nurse managers are in need of facilitative communication. Therefore, job education and training for improving nurse managers' communication skills particularly related to empathic understanding, genuineness and concreteness are required.

Understanding the students' ability and tendency of self assessment is one of the important factors in helping their learning and in giving the appropriate feedbacks. The purposes of this study is to analyse the coincidency of the students' self-assessment with the teacher assessment, and the tendency of over and under estimation. The students performed open investigations and assessed their process skills by checking their investigation reports with a given checklist. The total mean of the 'Self-Assessment Capability(SAC)' was 0.73 by 1. The SAC was related to the achievement, not to the gender. The correlation between SAC and achievement was significantly positive(r=0.7, p<.01), and for the girls, the tendency was remarkable. Among the five areas of process skills of open investigation, students got the highest SAC score in the managing and interpreting data area, and the lowest SAC in the drawing conclusion area. The mean of 'Self-Assessment Tendency(SAT)' for all items showed that students overestimated their process skills. While the high achievement students underestimated their process skills, the middle and low showed the tendency of overestimation.

The purpose of this paper is to develop evaluation methods in order to apply effective problem-based learning (PBL). To observe the effectiveness of a PBL system on learners and to comprehend the learning process of a PBL application, analysis of reflective journals and an evaluation questionnaire completed by participants (n=68) were used. The participants of the study were recruited from Hankyong National University students who undertook first-year Creative Engineering Design. A total of four problems for the PBL-based lectures were designed and applied to 12 weeks of PBL lectures. The participants completed reflective journals upon completion of each PBL problem-based activity; upon completion of the last PBL problem, participants completed and submitted a PBL system class-evaluation questionnaire. Also the participants completed an evaluation questionnaire at each step of the instructional procedures for each PBL problem-based activity. The findings of the research show that the participants increased their comprehension of PBL systems, their understanding of lecture content and of cooperative learning, and improved their self-reflection, authentic experience, creative problem-solving skills, communication skills, documentation skills, presentation skills, observational skills, and evaluation skills. The participants described how learning through PBL increased their confidence, satisfaction, and sense of achievement, compared to the previous semester.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the abilities of 6th grade students to assess the relationship between spatial capability, concept of celestial motion, and science process skills, which can help find a better teaching strategy for students in understanding the concept of celestial motion. The results are as follows. First, in terms of level of accomplishment of these three skills, male students show higher level of accomplishment than female students, but significant differences are found. Second, according to the analysis of the effect of spatial capability and concept of the movement of heavenly bodies, the former has a stronger influence on the students' cognition of celestial motion. Minor elements of spatial capability that influence the conception of celestial motion are device analogy, calculation of wood cut, and revolving light. Third, spatial capability is very influential on the level of accomplishment in science process skills. Among the minor elements of spatial capability that is influential to science process skills, calculation of wood cut is the highest, especially when various elements are interactively related to each other.
