  • Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same route, the close proximity of power lines and buried metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. Therefore there has been and still is a slowing concern about possible hazards resulting from the influence of power lines on metallic pipelines. Underground pipelines that run parallel to or in close proximity to power lines are subjected to induced voltages caused by the time-varying magnetic fields produced by the power line currents. The induced electro- motive force cause currents circulation in the pipeline and voltages between the pipeline and surrounding earth. This paper analyzes the induced voltage on the gas pipelines buried in parallel with 22.9kV distribution lines. Their magnitude depends on the length of parallelism and on the distance between distribution lines and pipeline.

  • Established in the 1960s, high pressure underground pipelines in Ulsan and Yeosu industrial estate are underground as toxic gas as well as combustible gas that is heavier than city gas and low combustion range. Especially, industrial pipelines occupy more than 20 years old pipes. In this way, the industrial estate pipeline was installed before the introduction of the supervision of construction, However, unlike the city gas pipeline, the pipeline is managed without any legal obligation. In this study, the safety management status of high pressure underground pipelines and urban gas underground pipelines in the industrial estate is analyzed and comparison of laws, extent of damage impact, using the pipe inspection model for pipe inspection of high pressure piping system with the existing piping system. it is intended to cuntribute to improving the safety of industrial estate are underground pipeline.

  • The robotic automation in NonDestructive Testing(NDT) is a promising field of research and it helps to expand the applications of NDT enormously. Especially, in the case of pipelines which are widely used in various industrial facilities, it is required to secure adequate ways of inspection in the usual maintenance activitites. In this paper, we present a robot system for inpipe inspection of underground urban gas pipelines. The robot is configured as an articulated structure like a snake with a tether cable. Two active driving vehicles are located in front and rear of the system, respectively and passive modules such as a NonDestructive Testing module and a control module are chained between the active vehicles. The proposed system has outstanding mobility by employing a new steering mechanism called Double Active Universal Joint, which makes it possible to cope with complicated configurations of underground pipelines. Characteristic features of the system are described and the construction of the system is briefly outlined.

  • The high pressure underground pipelines of industrial states such as Ulsan, Yeosu consist with not only the pipelines for the utility support such as Raw material of petrochemical industry and steam, but also high pressure pipelines of toxic, flammable gas intricately like a web. Therefore, in this study, based on in-depth comparison analysis of industrial estate pipelines, and underground city gas pipelines' safety management status, excavation frequency, excavation depth, patrol period which are pipe damage impact factor by the other construction are analyzed. And, as a result, risk changes and correlations due to risk reduction strategy of the other construction are compared to be presented the safety inspection operation model for the high pressure underground pipelines of industrial estates.

  • A defect which is axially oriented with small size is hard to detect in conventional system. CMFL(Cricumferential Magnetic Flus Leakage) type PIG(Pipelines Inspection Gauge) in the NDT(Nondestructive Testing), is operated to detect this defect called axially oriented cracks in the pipe. It is necessary to decompose the size and shapes of cracks for the manintenance of underground pipelines. This article is focused on the decomposing method of the size and shape of the axially oriented cracks by using inspection signal data for defect.

  • A large number of underground pipelines in the Ulsan National Industrial Complex has been constructed to improve the productivity of chemical products and tackle transportation problems. Now, the total of 1,293km of underground pipelines around 62 companies has been installed and operated. Many of underground pipelines have been installed outside of factories. For a past three years, five gas leakage accidents have occurred and the emergency response took up to 8 hours or more. Due to these delay in accidents, second serious accidents might occur and lead to occur damages to adjacent residents. In this study, it is assumed that emergency valve systems are installed under a ground and the efficacy of these is verified. Consequence analysis program was employed to evaluate the mitigation impact of emergency valve systems. The results show that these valve systems are economical and their performances for a mitigation are excellent. The results indicate that the installation of emergency valve systems for underground pipelines should be urgently legislated and performed.

  • Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same route, the close proximity of power lines and buried metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. The lightning strokes collected by an electric substation or power line tower might cause arcing through the soil to an adjacent gas pipeline. This paper gives the review of the breakdown mechanism and the standards of separation distance between lower and pipelines.

  • In this paper a new defect length estimation algorithm using SQI(self quotient image) is presented for the MFL(magnetic flux leakage) inspection of underground gas pipelines. Gas pipelines are magnetized by the permanent magnets of the MFL PIG(pipeline inspection gauge) when the PIG runs through pipelines. If defects or corrosions exist in the pipeline, magnetic leakage flux is increased. The MFL signals measured by hall sensors are analyzed to estimate defect length using SQI. For 74 real defects carved in KOGAS pipeline simulation facility(KPSF) the accuracy of defect length estimation of the proposed algorithm was compared with that of conventional methods.
