  • In this paper, we discussed the energy performance of underfloor air distribution(UFAD) and overhead air distribution system according to outdoor air intake rates in a office building. For this, the laboratory(S lab.) is selected for measuring the thermal environments of UFAD system and overhead system. Based on the measured data, the TRNSYS simulation is used to evaluate the energy performance of UFAD system and the overhead system according to outdoor air intake rates. By increasing outdoor air intake rates from required outdoor air intake rates(100CMH) to maximum air intake rates, the energy savings of UFAD system comparing with overhead system are varied $15%{\sim}25.6%$ in summer, $12.8%{\sim}19%$ in fall/spring and not varied in winter(8%). As results of simulations on stratification height and cooling set temperature, the lower the stratification height and the higher cooling set temperature, the larger cooling energy savings of UFAD comparing with overhead system according to outdoor air intake rates.

  • The authors carried out experiment, Computer Fluid Dynamics(CFD) and energy simulation of simulator. As a results of experiment and CFD, diffuser velocity is very important design factor for occupied zone air conditioning in Under Floor Air Distribution(UFAD) system. Then, in contrast to energy consumption of the Overhead system, the UFAD system could reduce 6.4% of the total energy because of occupied tone air conditioning. It concluded that tile UFAD system is more effective in energy Performance than the Overhead system.

  • This paper aims at suggesting design guidelines for a perimeter-less HVAC system that contributes energy savings. Perimeter-less HVAC system is one that relieves difficulties fuck as handling mixing loss, uneven radiative environment, and maintenance and repair. It prevents heat load gained through window and outdoor wall without modifying a previously equipped building skin system. In this paper, we performed several kinds of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) cases through numerical simulation to obtain an optimized perimeter-less design, and then we conducted a large-scale model experiment to see how the push-pull air flow would handle indoor heat to obtain an optimized perimeter-less design.

  • Despite the fact that UFAD(Under Floor Air Distribution) systems have many benefits and are being applied in the field in increasing numbers, there is a strong need for an improved fundamental understanding of several key performance features of these systems. This study numerically investigates the effect of supplied air temperature and supplied flow rate on the performance of UFAD, especially focused on thermal comfort. Also this study has compared UFAD with conventional overhead air distribution system. In contrast to the well-mixed room air conditions of the conventional overheat system, UFAD system produces an overall floor-to-ceiling airflow pattern that takes advantage of the natural buoyancy produced by heat sources in the occupied zone and more efficiently removes heat loads and contaminants from the space. Thermal comfort parameters were evaluated by CFD approach and then PMV was computed to detect the occupants' thermal sensation. Results show that radiative mean temperature plays crucial role on the evaluating PMV. Until now, the radiative temperature has been the missing link between CFD and thermal comfort, but the present study paves the way for overcoming this weakness.

  • The present study has been conducted for evaluating and comparing the performance of the underfloor air distribution system(UFAD) and the ceiling based air distribution system(CBAD) under cooling condition. Simulations and experiments were carried out for verifying the model by TRNSYS program about UFAD and CBAD. The results of simulation for various conditions of thermal load are summarized as followings. UFAD had an advantage for making thermal comfort because of lower temperature of the floor surface. Moreover, UFAD showed lower fan power about 30~50% than CBAD under the same conditions of thermal load. The energy saving rates of UFAD were increased to 17.7% in proportion to the thermal load on unoccupied zone(lighting). Ultimately, additional investigations should be done for analyzing optimized operating conditions of UFAD with considering the thermal performance of building envelop and the thermal load.

This study numerically investigates the effect of design parameters on the performance of UFAD, especially focused on thermal comfort. The design parameters considered in this study include supplied air temperature, supplied flow rate, diffuser shape, swirl, diffuser location, and floor-to-floor height. Until now, the radiative temperature has been the missing link between CFD and thermal comfort, but the present study paves the way for overcoming this weakness.

  • In Korea, pumping pipe using gravity way by water is most popular method in drainage system. But, it is difficult to repair a drainpipe in this method because the drain pipe diameter is increased as using this method. In this research, we propose a new drainage system. The system aim for an adaptedness with buildings, freedom of plan, construction and renewal in water pipe equipments, etc. The new system is not need of incline of piping, and it uses drainage power that is changed potential energy by high velocity flow as making Siphonage at vertical pipe. Therefore, the diameter of piping can decreased than existing piping system established in the ceiling. Also because connecting position will be located at the lower part, it is changed the potential energy of drainage to the high velocity flow. In addition, drainage will be smooth because the fixture drain is linked by each drain pipes.

Focus has been put on current status of research in the aspect of heating, cooling, ventilation, sanitation and building environment. The conclusions are as follows. (1) Most of fundamental studies on fluid flow were related with heat transportation of facilities. Drop formation and rivulet flow on solid surfaces were interesting topics related with condensation augmentation. Research on micro environment considering flow, heat, humidity was also interesting for comfortable living environment. It can be extended considering biological aspects. Development of fans and blowers of high performance and low noise were continuing topics. Well developed CFD technologies were widely applied for developing facilities and their systems. (2) Most of papers related with heat transfer analysis and heat exchanger shows dealt with convection, evaporation, and channel flow for the design application of heat exchanger. The numerical heat transfer simulation studies have been peformed and reported to show heat transfer characteristics. Experimental as well as numerical studies on heat exchanger were reported, while not many papers are available for the system analysis including heat exchanger. (3) A review of the recent studies on heat pump system shows that performance analysis and control of heat pump have been peformed by various simulations and experiments. The research papers on multi-type heat pump system increased significantly. The studies on heat pipe have been examined experimently for change of working characteristics and strut lure. Research on the phase change has been carried out steadily and operation strategies of encapsulated ice storage tank are reported experimentally in several papers. (4) A review of recent studies on refrigeration/air conditioning system have focused on the system performance and efficiency for new alternative refrigerants. Evaporation and condensation heat transfer characteristics are investigated for tube shapes and new alternative refrigerants. Studies on components of refrigeration/air conditioning system are carried to examine efficiency for various compressors and performance of new expansion devices. In addition to thermophysical properties of refrigerant mixtures, studies on new refrigerants are also carried out, however research works on two-phase flow seemed to be insufficient.
