  • Recently, it is increasing the grape farm which is converted from paddy field to orchard. These soil which are poor drainage extremely also can be damaged a lot by excessive water or flooding during heavy rain season on summer. Therefore the aim of this study was carried out to measure the changes of soil water potential and to compare the growth responses of 'Jinok' (Vitis spp.) and 'Campbell Early' (V. labruscana) grapes under three drainage systems (control, conventional drainage, and under drainage). After heavy rain, soil water potential holding times above -15 kpa applied water excessive were 352, 348 and 180 hours in control, conventional, and under drainage systems, respectively. The clay content of the under drainage system was lower than the other systems about 8-12%. The crop water stress index was lowest in the under drainage and highest in the control. Also, photosynthetic rate has showed the opposite result with crop water stress index. It was significant differences between the treatments but, the value has not shown significantly different between the varieties. In addition, leaf area and the trunk growth rate was more effective in under drainage than in the control and conventional drainage.

  • For a two-way drainage deposit under a surcharge load, it is possible to leave a layer adjacent to the bottom drainage boundary without prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) improvement and achieve approximately the same degree of consolidation as a fully penetrated case. This depth is designated as an optimum PVD installation depth. Further, for a two-way drainage deposit under vacuum pressure, if the PVDs are fully penetrated through the deposit, the vacuum pressure will leak through the bottom drainage boundary. In this case, the PVDs have to be partially penetrated, and there is an optimum installation depth. The equations for calculating these optimum installation depths are presented, and the usefulness of the equations is studied by using finite element analysis as well as laboratory model test results.

  • Silage comkv, suwwn 19). sorghum $\times$ sudangrass(p. 988) and winter ryeNaton) were cultivated on imperfectly drained paddy field under two different draining methods, subsurface darinage by PVC pipes and open ditsched surface drainage. The crops were harvested at the stage of hard dough for corn and soft dough for wrghum and rye. The soil physical properties. soil colors. soil structure and soil wetness were improved in the subsurface drainage. Gravitational water table occured depth in 110 cm(dry season)~75cm(rain season). In soil profile description, yellowish brown with yellowish red mottles and well developed granular structure were found in the surface A horizon. The portion of solid phase in subsoils(B horizon) was reduced from 48.6%(undrained) to 43.7 %. A blocky structure with dark gray to gray were described in the open ditsched surface drainage. Severe wet depression of the crops was observed due to it's higher moisture contents, where the gravitational water occured depth in 25~37cm during the rainy season. The chemical properties of paddy soils were less affected by drainage methods. The concentration of available phosphate. organic matter and exchangeable K, Ca and Mg were decreased in the subsurface drained soils. The annual dry matter yields of com-rye cropping were 17.8 ton in the undrained, 21.6 ton in the open ditsch drainage and 35.9 ton/ha in the subsurface drainage.

  • Sulfide minerals contacted with air and water in coal seam cause oxidation reactions. This oxidation reactions make low pH of groundwater and surface water(Acid Drainage). The reddish brown precipitate collected from the cut slope of the study area was estimated using the X-Ray Diffractometer(XRD). XRD results show that the cut slope was affected by Acid Drainage. The cut slope exposured to Acid Drainage become weak about chemical weathering and defile the appearance of the road. Drainage facilities are very important in Cut Slope under Acid Drainage influence. Reactions between Coal seam and water cause chemical weathering and environmental problem. Therefore It is important to control the transfer paths of groundwater and surface water and to install water collecting facilities

  • Soil-aggregate system in pavement foundations exist in unsaturated conditions. However, change in water content on foundation layers due to joint and structural cracks during rainfall may cause problems like layer deformations or partial settlements. Therefore, a need exist to evaluate the infiltration and drainage capacity of soil-aggregate foundation system under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. To do that, a laboratory soil-water characteristic curve and permeability under unsaturated conditions are assessed to establish hydraulic properties of geomaterials and limited numerical analysis are performed respectively. As a result, it was found that suction profiles and drainage process was greatly influenced by the initial suction of soil-aggregate system at the time of infiltration, soil water characteristics curves, and hysteresis effects.

  • Subdural hygromas are easily treated by trephination and drainage. Therefore, most neurosurgeons do not consider subdural hygromas seriously. However, various complications including intracerebral hemorrhage may develop after rapid drainage of subdural hygroma although rare. Postoperative intracerebral hemorrhage presents with a rapid deterioration of consciousness and focal neurological deficits occurring immediately after drainage of the subdural hygroma. The authors present an unfortunate massive intracerebral hemorrhage and pneumocephalus following drainage of the bifrontal subdural hygroma. The patient subsequently died. To prevent this disastrous complication, close neurosurgical observation and gradual drainage under a closed system seem mandatory. Possible pathogenic mechanisms for this unfavorable complication is discussed with a review of pertinent literatures.

  • The MDDA (Modified Dynamic Drainage Analyzer) was developed to evaluate the drainage characteristics on paper machine. The initial forming vacuum velocity was decreased with the increase of stock consistency and there were no significant effects of the applied vac-uum. On the other hand the initial forming drainage velocity was rapidly decreased with the increase of stock consistency above the 0.35 bar of applied vacuum. The final drainage time and wet web permeability showed similar trends under 0.075% consistency but increased rapidly at the higher consistencies. SFR(Specific Filtration Resistance) and drainage obtained for different vacuum level applied and deposited weights measured by using MDDA showed the linear relationship.

  • The purpose of this study is to give the data neccesary for improving the planning of drainage structures, specially inverted siphons, in irrigation channels. With the samples of 15 drainage inlets, one drainage flume, 16 drainage inverted siphons and 6 drainage culverts in the 3 lines of irrigation channel under Chong-Won Irrigation Association, author abtained the following results. 1. It is presumed that design drainage discharge should be determined with some additional reserves, on the basis of the maximum rainfall intensity in local area and the size of drainage area on the topographical map, avoiding the way of eye measure. 2. Location of drainage inlet should be kept away from the place where topography can make lots of wash load, but when unavoidably allowing the inflow into irrigation channel, wash load outlet with even the purpose of drainage, or drainage flume in stead of drainage inlet should be taken account of. 3. It is presumed that drainage flume may be the structure which can perform its function from a structural point of view as far as topography permits. 4. Drainage inverted siphon should be avoided at any place as much as possible; a) In case that location of the siphon would be permitted only at paddy field, drainage area hauing the amount of discharge which requires more than 90cm in diameter could only be allowed. b) In this case, crest elevation of the tank of both inlet and outlet, at least, should not be lower than the surface level of paddy field. c) As far as topography and stratum permit, ratio of depth of outlet tank to head drop should be decreased as much as possible so that discharging efficiency of wash load could increase. d) In case of avoiding the setting of the siphon, irrigation aqueduct, irrigation inverted siphon, or drainage flume should be recommended in accordance with topography. 5. Discharging capability of wash load by drainage culvert appeared to depend hardly upon the diameter of the culvert, but greatly upon the location, specially near village, for there stones and dirts dumped may considerably be piled up. So, a counter plan for that is required.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of pressure drainage for geotextile, small-scale model tests were carried out for the horizontal and vertical geotextile drain to accelerate consolidation of foundation under embankment for the purpose of foundation reinforcement. According to the result of this study, the accumulative drainage discharge is found to increase as compressive stress of geotextile increases with logarithmic function. The drainage discharge under each step of compressive stress linearly increases with the increase of hydraulic head and its increasing rate is smaller when the compressive stress is higher. The drainage discharge shows to be greater when the number of geoteztile layers is more and the foundation material is finer. The relationship between transmissivity of geogextile and drainage discharge has positive correlation and the rate of increase is appeared to be the same regardless of foundation material and hydraulic head. And it proves that the drainage capacity of geotextile drain is determined by the transmissivity of geoteztile.

  • Within a country, owing to the restriction of aggregate which have been supplied to construction sites, applicability of byproducts such as the copper slag is expected to be more reasonable. In this study, on the basis of characteristics, grain distribution and environmental stability of copper slag, its engineering application was estimated as the vertical and horizontal drainage material. As a results of laboratory tests, it was shown that the permeability of the copper slag was similar to that of sands under vertical drainage condition. In addition, the copper slag showed higher critical hydraulic gradient than that of sand under upward vertical flow state. The copper slag has potential safety against piping and it that the copper slag is suitable for drainage and filter material.
