  • In twin roll strip casting process, the design of casting roll is the most important equipment for producing strip. Analyses of heat transfer and deformation for the casting roll are carried out by using the finite element program, ANSYS. Both the elastic deformation and the elasto-plastic deformation under a thermal load are considered in the analysis. Optimization to minimize the volume of roll is performed under the various thermal loads such as the heat flux and the roll speed. Design variables are defined by diameters and positions of the cooling hole in the roll , Although the thermal load remarkably varies, the design variables and objective function are found to be consistent.

  • Behavior of a package of a microwave oven under the clamping condition is evaluated by tests and the finite element analyses. PAM-CRASH software is used for the finite element analyses. Results of the analyses are compared with those of the tests and accuracy is shown to be favorable. Under the clamping condition of the original design, severe deformation occurs and an improved design of the outer case and upper EPS(Expandable Poly Styrene) is proposed to reduce it. Face beads of the outer case are introduced and shape of the upper EPS is modified to reduce the deformation resulting from the clamping load. The improved design model is analyzed and its deformation is shown to be satisfactory. A prototype is produced according to the improved design and tests are performed. Results of the clamping test of the prototype show that the plastic deformation is removed totally.

  • The optimum design of the cylindrical shell under external pressure loading is considered. The design variable is a skin thickness of the unstiffened parallel middle body shell. Overall buckling strength and direct stress and displacements constraints are considered in the design problem The optimum design is achieved with one of the standard nonlinear constrained optimization technique. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients is developed using the direct differentiation.

  • In this paper, the robust design and tolerancing of the stabilized mirror is performed to increase its stabilization performance under vehicle vibration. Based on the sensitivity analysis, the seven important control factors are first identified, and then the optimal as well as robust values in the sense of Taguchi method are obtained. Finally, the tolerances associated with each design variables are determined based on a successive sensitivity analysis of the simulated system response so that the deviation in the response from the target value meets the specification requirements. The proposed tolerancing method features that it is a robust but conservative design method and that the computational effort is much less than the Monte Carlo simulation method.

  • The service level of Metro stations is affected by the design criteria such as platform area, width and length of stairways, and the number of turnstile, etc. The Korean station design process utilizes peak-hour volume as design volume. Hourly volume, however, can not explicitly account for the variation of traffic and consequently the variation of the level of service within the one-hour time period. Movements in various areas inside of stations are simulated with a queueing network under various operating conditions. A discrete simulation tool called SIMUL8 was utilized. Based on the results, peak volume for 15 minutes period was recommended as a preferred base volume over the peak-hour volume for station design purpose to realistically account for user delays under. Simulation runs also confirmed that escalators have positive effects on passenger processing capacity and on securing stability of passenger flows in stations.

  • In order to confirm the creation of the OH radical which influences to RNO bleaching processes, it experimented using laboratory reactor of dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBDP). The experiments performed in about 4 kind process variables (diameter of ground electrode, diameter of discharge electrode, diameter of quartz tube and effect of air flow rate) which influence to process. In order to examine optimum conditions of design factors as shown in Box-Behnken experiment design, ANOVA analysis was conducted against four factors. The actual RNO removal at optimized conditions under real design constraints were obtained, confirming Box-Behnken results. Optimized conditions under real design constraints were obtained for the highest desirability at 1, 1 mm diameter of ground and discharge electrode, 6 mm diameter of quartz tube and 5.05 L/min air flow rate, respectively.

  • A 154kV class high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable system is developing in Korea. For insulation design of this cable, it is important that study on cryogenic electrical insulation design to develop the cold dielectric type HTS cable because the cable is operated under the high voltage environment in cryogenic temperature. Therefore, this paper describes a design method for the electrical insulation layer of the cold dielectric type HTS cable adopting the partial discharge-free design under ac stress, based on the experimental results such a ac breakdown strength, partial discharge inception stress, $V_{ac}$-t characteristics, $V_{imp}$-n characteristics, and impulse breakdown strength of liquid nitrogen/laminated polypropylene paper (LPP) composite insulation system in which the mini-model cable is immersed into pressurized liquid nitrogen.

  • This article consider a performance model selection based on AIC under unbalanced deign in linear mixed effect models. Vaida and Balanchard (2005) proposed conditional AIC for model selection in linear mixed effect models when the prediction of random effects is of primary interest. Theoretical properties of cAIC and related criteria have been investigated by Liang et al. (2008) and Greven and Kneib (2010). However, all of the simulation studies were performed under a balanced design. Even though functional form of AIC remain same even under the unbalanced deign, it is worthwhile to investigate performance of AIC based model selection criteria under the unbalanced design. The simulation study in this article shows how unbalancedness affects model selection in linear mixed effect models.

  • Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are passive damping devices widely employed to mitigate the pedestrian-induced vibrations on footbridges. The TMD design must ensure an adequate performance during the overall life-cycle of the structure. Although the TMD is initially adjusted to match the natural frequency of the vibration mode which needs to be controlled, its design must further take into account the change of the modal parameters of the footbridge due to the modification of the operational and environmental conditions. For this purpose, a motion-based design optimization method is proposed and implemented herein, aimed at ensuring the adequate behavior of footbridges under uncertainty conditions. The uncertainty associated with the variation of such modal parameters is simulated by a probabilistic approach based on the results of previous research reported in literature. The pedestrian action is modelled according to the recommendations of the Synpex guidelines. A comparison among the TMD parameters obtained considering different design criteria, design requirements and uncertainty levels is performed. To illustrate the proposed approach, a benchmark footbridge is considered. Results show both which is the most adequate design criterion to control the pedestrian-induced vibrations on the footbridge and the influence of the design requirements and the uncertainty level in the final TMD design.

  • Double-deck train has been attracted growing attention as next generation transportation around metropolis because of high passenger carrying capacity. To develop high-speed double-deck train with low operational costs, the carbody must be designed as light as possible. In addition, the carbody must be strong enough to ensure the safety of passengers. To meet these design requirements, we perform systematically weight minimization that determines thickness of aluminum extruded panels of the carbody. First, to reduce the design variables, we carry out the screening process that select sensitive or/and important design variables through design exploration. Then, weight minimization is accomplished under multi-loading condition such as vertical, compressive and torsional loads, while satisfying strength constraints of the design regulations. Finally, the result of design optimization is discussed by comparison with its initial design.
