This paper presents the results of full-scale loading tests performed on 54 passive anchors and 4 group anchored footings grouted to various lengths at several sites in Korea. The test results, the failure mechanisms as well as uplift capacities of rock anchors depend mostly on rock type and quality, embedded fixed length, properties of the discontinuities, and the strength of rebar. Anchors in poor quality rocks generally fail along the grout/rock interfaces when their depths are very shallow (a fixed length of less than 1 m). However, even in such poor rocks, we can induce a more favorable mode of rock pull-up failure by increasing the fixed length of the anchors. On the other hand, anchors in good quality rocks show rock pull-up failures with high uplift resistance even when they are embedded at a shallow depth. Laboratory test results revealed that a form of progressive failure usually occurs starting near the upper surface of the grout, and then progresses downward. The ultimate tendon-grout bond strength was measured from $18{\sim}25%$ of unconfined compressive strength of grout. One of the important findings from these tests is that the measured strains along the corrosion protection sheath were so small that practically the reduction of bond strength by the presence of sheath would be negligible. Based on test results, the main parameters governing the uplift capacity of the rock anchor system were determined. By evaluation of the ultimate uplift capacity of anchor foundations in a wide range of in situ rock masses, rock classification suitable for a transmission tower foundation was developed. Finally, a very simple and economical design procedure is proposed for rock anchor foundations subjected to uplift tensile loads.

This study was conducted to find out the characteristics of the expanded road embankment constructed by the lightweight air-mixed soil (slurry density $10kN/m^3$) for a short-term without any ground improvement. Compression strength, capillary rise height of the lightweight air-mixed soil and settlement behavior of soft ground were studied. Compression strengths of the specimens sampled at the site after 1 and 5 months of construction were all satisfied the required strength 500 kPa. However, it was not convinced the homogeneity construction, because the values of strength were depending on the sampled location. Also, strength difference between laboratory and site specimens were found about 19%, and thus it should be considered for mixing design. Capillary rise reached about 20 cm for 70 hours because of a numerous tiny pores existed inside the lightweight air-mixed soil. Relationship between settlement and time of the soft ground placed underneath the expanded embankment was estimated by using the measured data and back analysis technique. The current average consolidation ratio and the final settlement after 120 months later were estimated about 32% and 4.5cm, respectively. This settlement is much less value than the allowable settlement 10cm for this structure.
An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the smeared effect due to mandrel penetration into soft ground for a vertical drain installation. Laboratory tests were performed to investigate the formation of a smear zone, the variations of strength, and the consolidation characteristics in the disturbed zone using two types(CL at Yangsan site and OH at Pohang site) of soft clayey soils. The smear zone effect was evaluated focusing on mandrel shape, mandrel size, penetration speed, and ground condition. Based on laboratory test results, the diameter of the smear zone$(d_s)$ ranged from 3.08 and 3.92 times that of mandrel$(d_m)$. It was also found that the $(d_s/d_m)$ value of the circular shape of the mandrel is smaller than those of square and rectangular shapes. The value of $(d_s/d_m)$ decreased with larger mandrel size, lower penetration speed in the CL soil, and higher penetration speed in the OH soil. However, natural water content was minimally affected by $(d_s/d_m)$. Respectively, the coefficients of horizontal consolidation$(C_{hs})$ and horizontal Permeability$(K_s)$ of smear zone ranged from 0.81 to 0.87 times, and 0.73 to 0.83 times those of the undisturbed zone. Based on this study, the values of $C_{hs}, K_s$ and unconfined compressive strength$(q_{us})$ in the smear zone were the lowest at close vicinity of the mandrel and increased linearly with distance from the mandrel. Further, the $(q_{us})$ varied from 0.5 to 0.9 times that of the undisturbed zone strength.
Currently, the west coast has focused on large-scale investment and development, such as harbor construction work and land reclamation projects, with soft ground grouting issues being the major concern. In addition, grouting for soft ground reinforcement is definitely considered that construction purpose, soil condition, construction situation, and construction costs. The SRC method, which is a high pressure injection method, can easily produce well-distributed strength regardless of soil characteristics and is environmentally friendly. Therefore in this study, the SRC method was applied to marine clay on the west coast where located Jeongok-ri, Seosin-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea as well as estimated of the ground reinforcement and the application on the site. The results of the application on the site by SRC method indicated age 28 day strength is $14,700{\sim}31,800kN/m^2$ which is satisfied the criterion of unconfined compressive strength that more than $5,333kN/m^2$. Therefore the result that the SRC method constructed marine clay on the west coast indicated the outstanding strength as well as excellent durability.
In this study, the engineering properties including bearing capacity of subgrades stabilized with a binder are analyzed by laboratory and field experiments. The main components of the binder are CaO and $SO_3$. After the binder was mixed with a low plasticity clay, the passing rates were relatively decreased as the sieve mesh size increased. Not only did the soil type change to silty sand, but engineering properties, such as the plasticity index and modified California bearing ratio (CBR), were improved for the subgrade. A comparison of the compaction curves of the stabilized subgrade and field soil compacted with the same energy demonstrated an increase of approximately 6% in the maximum dry unit weight, slight decrease in optimum moisture content, and considerable increase improvement in grain size. In the modified CBR test, the effect of unit weight and strength increase of the modified soil (with a specific amount of binder) was remarkably improved. As the proportion of granulated material increased after the addition of binder, the swelling was reduced by 3.3 times or more during initial compaction and 6.5 times by final compaction. The unconfined compressive strength of the specimens was maintained at the homogeneous value with a constant design strength. The stabilized subgrade was validated by applying it in the field under the same conditions; this test demonstrated that the bearing capacity coefficients at all six sites after one day of compaction exceeded the target value and exhibited good variability.

In this study, the effects of sulphuric acid on the mechanical performance and the durability of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) specimens were investigated. The carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) fabrics were used to evaluate the performances of the confined and unconfined ECC specimens under static and cyclic loading in the acidic environment. In addition, the use of CFRP and BFRP fabrics as a rehabilitation technique was also studied for the specimens exposed to the sulphuric acid environment. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber with a fraction of 2% was used in the research. Two different PVA-ECC concretes were produced using low lime fly ash (LCFA) and high lime fly ash (HCFA) with the fly ash-to-OPC ratio of 1.2. Unwrapped PVA-ECC specimens were also produced as a reference concrete and all concrete specimens were continuously immersed in 5% sulphuric acid solution ($H_2SO_4$). The mechanical performance and the durability of specimens were evaluated by means of the visual inspection, weight change, static and cyclic loading, and failure mode. In addition, microscopic changes of the PVA-ECC specimens due to sulphuric acid attack were also assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the macroscale behavior of the specimens. Results indicated that PVA-ECC specimens produced with low lime fly ash (LCFA) showed superior performance than the specimens produced with high lime fly ash (HCFA) in the acidic environment. In addition, confinement of ECC specimens with BFRP and CFRP fabrics significantly improved compressive strength, ductility, and durability of the specimens. PVA-ECC specimens wrapped with carbon FRP fabric showed better mechanical performance and durability properties than the specimens wrapped with basalt FRP fabric. Both FRP materials can be used as a rehabilitation material in the acidic environment.
Lightweight Foamed Soil (LWFS) could be the substitute of normal soils used in backfill to earth structures and embankment materials far soft ground improvement in port and harbor project because of its effectiveness in settlement reduction and earth pressure decrease due to its lightness. A series of triaxial and unconfined compression tests were performed to investigate behaviors of LWFS composed of dredged soils, cement and air foam, and cured at underwater conditions. The density of LWFS will increase if LWFS is cured at underwater conditions because high water pressure makes air foam disappear or demolish during the curing compared with LWFS cured at normal air conditions. This paper is to find the mechanical behaviors of LWFS cured at seawater depth of 5.0 m and 10.0 m, respectively, which simulates underwater curing conditions by underwater pressure simulator chamber developed during this study. In addition, new normalized factor formula, which takes account of mixing design conditions determining compressive strength of LWFS, was proposed to consider mixing design factor fur LWFS.

The most appropriate mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash obtained from compaction characteristics and CBR values is varying from 5:5 to 6:4. But these mixed ashes are frost-susceptible materials according to judging by the paticle-size distribution because of a lot of silty-size paticles. In this study, the frost-susceptibility of compacted coal ash with proper mixing ratio is examined experimentally for use of subgrade materials. And, the efforts have been made to find proper cement addition in making these mixed ashes frost-insusceptible. It was revealed that these mixed ashes are frost-susceptible, and 4% of cement content is required to be made frost-insusceptable. It was found that amount of frost heave of these mixed ashes decreases with the unconfined compressive strength, and increases with log k if the permeability coefficient k is as low as the water into the freezing front of these mixed ashes is restricted.

This study introduces a reinforcement work case using Twin-Jet Method. The area is located behind the abutment of the bridges built on soft clay along the $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ Express Highway. Its foundation was constructed by installing EPS blocks on the original ground to reduce the embankment load under the highway. However, the ground deformation has continuously occurred due to the settlement of the foundation soft cohesive soils. The amounts of subsidences at the surface turned out to be 20~30.0mm, After the pavement patch work on April 23, 2009, a drastic subsidence occurred together with 10mm swell, For this reason, Twin-Jet grout column construction was applied by passing through the EPS banking blocks without closing traffic flows on the express highway. The outcomes of core sample tests after reinforcing the ground turned out to be TCR 92.5%, RQD 64.6% and unconfined compressive strength 2.3~8.6Mpa. The test results showed that the condition of the ground foundation had improved using Twin-Jet grouting in most layers of ground including the cobble and gravel layer.

In Hong Kong, large-diameter (${\ge}600mm$) bored piles and large-section excavated rectangular barrettes are commonly used to support tall buildings to resist both vertical and horizontal loads. These piles and barrettes penetrate through and may found in saprolitic soils and decomposed rocks. Generally, the design of these large bored piles and barrettes involves considerable amount of uncertainty and design parameters must usually be verified by field tests. In this paper, over 50 full-scale load tests on large-diameter bored piles and over 15 large-section of rectangular barrettes in Hong Kong are reviewed and interpreted critically, in particular the degree of mobilisation of side shear resistance using a mobilization rating (MR) factor and a displacement index (DI) for floating bored piles and barrettes and rock-socketed piles, respectively. The author was heavily involved with many of these load tests. The diameter of the bored piles tested ranges from 0.6m to 1.8m and the depth varies from 12m to 75m. Sizes of barrettes critically reviewed include $2.2m{\times}0.6m,\;2.2m{\times}0.8m,\;2.8m{\times}0.8m\;and\;2.8m{\times}1.0m$ (on plan) and the depth varies from 36m and 63m. Based on these field tests, a new failure load criterion for large-diameter bored piles and barrettes is developed and proposed. The side shear resistance of the bored piles and barrettes is quantitatively analyzed with respect to local displacements, standard penetration tests, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for rock sockets and using the effective stress principle. In addition, the effects of construction including post-grouting, construction time, side scraping and excavation tools on side shear resistance are investigated and reported.
