  • A stereoscopic particle tracking velocimetry (SPTV) technique based on the 2-frame hybrid particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) method was developed. The expansion of 2D PTV to SPTV is facilitated by the fact that the PTV method tracks individual particle centroids. To evaluate the performance and measurement accuracy of the present SPTV technique, it was applied to flow images of rigid body translation and synthetic standard images of jet shear flow and impinging jet flow. The data processing routine and measurement uncertainty of the SPTV technique are compared with those of conventional stereoscopic particle image velecimet.y (SPBV). In addition, the centroid translation effect of 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) is defined and its effect on SPIV measurements is discussed. Compared to the SPIV method, the SPTV technique has inherited merits of concise and precise velocity evaluation procedures and provides better spatial resolution and measurement accuracy.

  • In this paper, a standard field generation method using a micro-TEM ceil is described and its measurement uncertainty is evaluated. The standard field generation system consists of an auto-leveling signal source, a micro-TEM cell operating up to 1.2 GHz, and a power measuring Instrument using a thermistor mount. Measurement results of a field strength key comparison (CCEM.RF-K20) for the field strength of 20 V/m at frequencies between 10 MHz and 1 GHz are presented for validating the standard field generation method.

  • Retroreflection of vehicle headlights, as induced by spherical glass beads, is a key optical phenomenon that provides road-surface markings with greatly enhanced visibility, thus better securing a driver's safety in the nighttime as well as in unclear daytime. Retroreflectance of glass beads is a quite sensitive function of their refractive index, so that measurement of the refractive index of glass specifically in the shape of spherical beads needs to be performed within a reasonable uncertainty that is tolerable for road-marking applications. The Becke line method has been applied in assessing refractive index of such glass beads as e.g. an industrial standard in the Republic of Korea; however, the reference refractive-index liquids are not commercially available these days for refractive index greater than 1.80 due to the toxicity of the constituent materials. As such, high-refractive-index glass beads require an alternate method, and in this regard we propose a practically serviceable technique with uncertainty tantamount to that of the Becke line method: Based on comparison of calculated and measured retroreflectance values of commercial glass beads, we discover that their refractive index can be determined with reasonable precision via the retroreflectance measurement. Specifically, in this study the normalized retroreflectance originating from a single glass sphere is computed as a function of refractive index using the Fresnel equations, which is then validated as coinciding well with retroreflectance values measured from actual specimens, i.e. glass-bead aggregates. The uncertainties involved are delineated in connection with radius and imperfections of the glass beads.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a portable vibration analyzer that is effective for acquiring and analyzing vibration data of rotating equipment of a power plant and a domestic vibration monitoring system manufacturer Nada Co., Ltd. The hardware of the developed portable vibration analyzer minimizes measurement errors by calibrating the measured values obtained through measurement uncertainty for calibration of the measuring devices in the system, and is composed of a signal processing device with high resolution through high speed data processing. The software structure implements a variety of vibration plots to execute a detailed analysis program, and applies algorithms to measure and remove noise caused by disturbances while operating a rotating machine. The developed product contributed greatly to increase the user's mobility and performance, as well as to reduce the purchase cost due to localization.

  • An ID LC/MS (isotope dilution liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry) was used as a primary method for the quantitative analysis of cholesterol in human serum. The separation of cholesterol was carried out by Thermo ODS hypersil $C^{18}$ column. The mobile phase was 100% methanol, and flow rate was $0.3m{\ell}/min$. Cholesterol and cholesterol-$3,4-13C_2$ were monitored at m/z 369.4 and 371.3, which correspond to $[M-H_2O+H]^+$ respectively. In order to verify the measurement method, NIST SRM 909b was analyzed. The results agreed well with certified values within uncertainty. The four kinds of serum certified reference material were prepared and certified. The repeatabilities of measurement were ranged from 0.1 to 0.8% (RSD), which were relatively good. The reproducibility between independent measurement run was below 0.24% (RSD). The expanded uncertainty was about 1.43% within the 95% confidence interval.

  • Very accurate calibration is needed to index tables which are necessary for precision angle measurement. The repeatability of index table is less than 0.2 second, so that attentions should be paid to choosing devices to be used in the calibration of index tables. The auto- collimators have been used in the calibration of index tables, but the repeatability of auto- collimators is bad compared with that of index table. In place of autocollimators, we described a method which uses electric comparators which are possessed by most precision measurement laboratories. Electric comparators are set to measure small angle displacement without interrupting the rotation of index tables and the signals of two electric comparators are added to remove the run-out errors of the shafts of index tables. Two index tables have been calibrated simulataneously by this method and the measurement data have been analyzed by the least squares method. We compare the calibration results with those of methods using autocollimator and auto- matic autocollimator and are able to know that the data of electric comparator method lie between the data of autocollimator methods. The repeatability of measurement is less than 0.02 second. The electric comparator method is economical and capable of reducing the uncertainty of the measurement.

  • A Bayesian probabilistic method is proposed for online estimation of the process noise and measurement noise parameters for Kalman filter. Kalman filter is a well-known recursive algorithm for state estimation of dynamical systems. In this algorithm, it is required to prescribe the covariance matrices of the process noise and measurement noise. However, inappropriate choice of these covariance matrices substantially deteriorates the performance of the Kalman filter. In this paper, a probabilistic method is proposed for online estimation of the noise parameters which govern the noise covariance matrices. The proposed Bayesian method not only estimates the optimal noise parameters but also quantifies the associated estimation uncertainty in an online manner. By utilizing the estimated noise parameters, reliable state estimation can be accomplished. Moreover, the proposed method does not assume any stationarity condition of the process noise and/or measurement noise. By removing the stationarity constraint, the proposed method enhances the applicability of the state estimation algorithm for nonstationary circumstances generally encountered in practice. To illustrate the efficacy and efficiency of the proposed method, examples using a fifty-story building with different stationarity scenarios of the process noise and measurement noise are presented.

  • Calibration capability was evaluated using the reference-grade platinum resistance thermometer (PRT) in the temperature range of $-50^{\circ}C$ to $250^{\circ}C$ for the national calibration centers. The reference-grade PRT was calibrated at the several fixed points, which was composed by the freezing points of Sn, In, the melting point of Ga and the triple point of water and Hg, before and after the round-robin test (RRT) experiments. The temperature scale of reference-grade PRT was compared to the local standard PRT's using the system of the national calibration centers. $E_{n}$ values was calculated by the temperature difference between the reference-grade PRT and the local standard PRT, and the best measurement capability. Finally, the capability of the national calibration centers was evaluated by the $E_{n}$ values.

  • Precipitation is the most important component and critical to the study of water and energy cycle. This study investigates the propagation of precipitation retrieval uncertainty in the simulation of hydrologic variables for varying spatial resolution on two different vegetation cover. We explore two remotely sensed rain retrievals (space-borne IR-only and radar rainfall) and three spatial grid resolutions. An offline Community Land Model (CLM) was forced with in situ meteorological data In turn, radar rainfall is replaced by the satellite rain estimates at coarser resolution $(0.25^{\circ},\;0.5^{\circ}\;and\;1^{\circ})$ to determine their probable impact on model predictions. Results show how uncertainty of precipitation measurement affects the spatial variability of model output in various modelling scales. The study provides some intuition on the uncertainty of hydrologic prediction via interaction between the land surface and near atmosphere fluxes in the modelling approach.

  • A Rating curve is a regression equation of discharge versus stage for a given point on a stream where the stream discharge is measured across the stream channel with a stage and discharge measurement. The curve is generally used to calculate discharge based on the stage. However, the existing approach showed problems in terms of estimating uncertainty associated with regression parameters including the separation parameter for low and high flow. In this regard, this study aimed to develop a new method for the aforementioned problems based on Bayesian approach, which can better estimate the parameter and its uncertainty. In addition, this study used a Bayesian Multi-Segmented (Bayesian M-S) model which is provided a comparison between the existing and proposed scheme. The proposed model showed better results for the parameter estimation than the existing approach, and provided better performance in terms of estimating uncertainty range.
