  • The present study concerns uncertainty assessment of powering prediction from towing tank model tests, suggested by the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC). The systematic uncertainty of towing tank tests was estimated by allowance of test setup and measurement accuracy of ITTC. The random uncertainty was varied from 0 to 8% of the measurement. Randomly generated inputs of test conditions and measurement data sets under systematic and random uncertainty are used to statistically analyze resistance and propulsive performance parameters at the full scale. The error propagation through an extrapolation procedure is investigated in terms of the sensitivity and coefficient of determination. By the uncertainty assessment, it is found that the uncertainty of resultant powering prediction was smaller than the test uncertainty.

  • The uncertainty quantification process in probabilistic Risk Assessment usually involves a specification of the uncertainty in the input data and the propagation of this uncertainty to the final risk results. The distributional sensitivity analysis is to study the impact of the various assumptions made during the quantification of input parameter uncertainties on the final output uncertainty. The uncertainty importance of input parameters, in this case, should reflect the degree of changes in the whole output distribution and not just in a point estimate value. A measure of the uncertainty importance is proposed in the present paper. The measure is called the distributional sensitivity measure(DSM) and explicitly derived from the definition of the Kullback's discrimination information. The DSM is applied to three typical discrimination information. The DSM is applied to three typical cases of input distributional changes: 1) Uncertainty is completely eliminated, 2) Uncertainty range is increased by a factor of 10, and 3) Type of distribution is changed. For all three cases of application, the DSM-based importance ranking agrees very well with the observed changes of output distribution while other statistical parameters are shown to be insensitive.

  • Ever since the development of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) in 1993, the concept of measurement uncertainty has been considered a core concept in metrology and the importance of proper uncertainty evaluation has continuously been increasing. Unfortunately, few papers in Korean are available that introduce the concept of measurement uncertainty and the GUM correctly and in sufficient detail. This review describes in detail the mathematical, historical, and philosophical background behind the concept of measurement uncertainty and the GUM, and also discusses some special aspects of uncertainty evaluation in chemical analysis.

  • While numerous studies have suggested the significance of uncertainty during the process of information-seeking, less research has investigated user uncertainty in the actual search process using a real system. This study investigated user perceptions of uncertainty in the process of the selection of Web search terms in the real information-seeking process. The subjects at the doctoral or post-doctoral level were limited to the discipline of science in order to understand user perceptions in this field. The findings revealed various dimensions, types, and incidents of uncertainty. The typology of uncertainty facilitated an understanding of the subjects' information-seeking context by identifying various aspects of the context that constituted the subjects' uncertainty The identification of two principal origins of uncertainty based on the different types of uncertainty generated implications to improve information systems and services.

  • Purpose - This study proposes the impact of the US and Korean economic policy uncertainty on macroeconomy, and its effect on Korea. The economic policy uncertainty index of the US and Korea is used to represent the economic policy uncertainty on Korean economy. Research design, data, and methodology - In this paper, we collect the eight variables to find out the interrelationship among the US and Korean economic policy uncertainty index of the US and macroeconomic indicators during 1990 to 2016, and use Vector Error Correction Model. Result - The distribution industry stock index in Korea is influenced by the economic policy uncertainty index of the US rather than of Korea. All variables are related negatively to the economic policy uncertainty index of the US and Korea from Vector Error Correction Model. This study shows that the economic policy uncertainty index of the US and Korea has the dynamic relationships on the Korean economy. Conclusions - A higher economic policy uncertainty shows a greater economy recession of a country. Finally, the economic policy uncertainty of the Korea has an intensive impact on Korea economy. Particularly, the economic policy uncertainty of the US has a strong impact on distribution industry stock market in Korea.

  • Purpose: This study was to describe the uncertainty, depression, physical symptom, and family support among patients undergoing dialysis. Further, the factors that impact uncertainty were also examined. Methods: A convenience sample of 145 patients who received dialysis was selected. A descriptive correlation study was conducted. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and the collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Results: The patient who received more than five years of dialysis reported higher levels on inconsistency of uncertainty than patient with less than five years. These latter patients' reported uncertainty was positively correlated with depression, whereas, patients family support was correlated with uncertainty. The group's uncertainty with less than five years of dialysis explained about 13% of the variance. In contrast, variables of education level, family support, and monthly income were predictors of uncertainty and explained 33% of the variation. Conclusion: These results can provide for nursing intervention to facilitate reduction of uncertainty. To provide dialysis period-sensitive nursing intervention for uncertainty among dialysis patient, depression should be considered below five years. While factors such as education level, family support, and monthly income should be taken into account over five years.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the uncertainty in the analysis of menthol content from the mentholated cigarette. Menthol in the sample cigarette was extracted with methanol containing an anethole as an internal standard, and then analyzed by gas chromatography. As the sources of uncertainty associated with the analysis of menthol, were the following points tested, such as the weighing of sample, the preparation of extracting solution, the pipetting of extracting solution into the sample, the preparation of standard solution, the precision of GC injections for standard & sample solution, the GC response factor of standard solution, the reproducibility of menthol analysis, and the determination of water content in tobacco, etc. For calculating the uncertainties, type A of uncertainty was evaluated by the statistical analysis of a series of observation, and type B by the information based on supplier's catalogue and/or certificated of calibration. Sources of uncertainty were subsequently included and mathematically combined with the uncertainty arising from the assessment of accuracy to provide the overall uncertainty. It was shown that the main source of uncertainty came from the errors in the reproducibility of menthol and water determination, the purity of menthol reference material in the preparation of standard solution, and the precision of GC injections for sample solution. The errors in sample weighing and volume measurement contributed relatively little to the overall uncertainty. The expanded uncertainty in the mentholated cigarettes, Korean and American brand, at 0.95 level of statistical confidence was $\pm$0.06 and $\pm$0.07 mg/g for a menthol content of 1.89 and 2.32 mg/g, respectively.

  • This study aimed to estimate the measurement uncertainty related to determination of hyaluronic acid used as a dietary supplement by high-performance liquid chromatography. According to the guidelines of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, the analytical processes for determination of hyaluronic acid were performed. And the measurement uncertainty obtained during the analytical processes were expressed in accordance with mathematical/ statistical guidances of GUM (Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement) & EURACHEM (Focus for Analytical Chemistry in Europe) for the analytical operations. For the uncertainty in measurement produced based on this analytical method, the expanded uncertainty was calculated by using the relative standard uncertainty between analytical results and sources of uncertainty in measurement (sample weight, final volume, extraction volume, standard solution, matrix and instrument etc). In the results of 95% confidence interval, it was calculated that the uncertainty in measurement was $57.75{\pm}8.76{\mu}g/kg$ (k=2.0). Therefore, it showed that the measurement uncertainty obtained by this analytical method influences on 15.2% of the contents of hyaluronic acid as the analytical results.

  • In this study, uncertainty analysis based on ITTC(International Towing Tank Conference) Recommended Procedures is carried out in the towing-tank experiment for motion responses and added resistance. The experiment was conducted for KVLCC2 model in head sea condition. The heave, pitch and added resistance were measured in different wave conditions, and the measurement was repeated up to maximum 15 times in each wave condition in order to observe the uncertainty of measured data. The uncertainty analysis was carried out by adopting the ISO-GUM(International Organization for Standardization, Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements) method recommended by ITTC. This paper describes the details about the analysis method, uncertainty and the measured uncertainty for each source. The uncertainty analysis results are summarized as a tabular form. To validate the accuracy of the present measurement, the experimental results are compared with the results of numerical computation and other experiment. From the present uncertainty analysis, the main sources of uncertainty are identified, which can be very useful to improve the accuracy for added resistance experiment.

  • Sampling based uncertainty analysis was carried out to quantify uncertainty in predictions of best estimate code RELAP5/MOD3.2 for a thermal hydraulic test (10% hot leg break LOCA) performed in the Large Scale Test Facility (LSTF) as a part of an IAEA coordinated research project. The nodalisation of the test facility was qualified for both steady state and transient level by systematically applying the procedures led by uncertainty methodology based on accuracy extrapolation (UMAE); uncertainty analysis was carried out using the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) method to evaluate uncertainty for ten input parameters. Sixteen output parameters were selected for uncertainty evaluation and uncertainty band between $5^{th}$ and $95^{th}$ percentile of the output parameters were evaluated. It was observed that the uncertainty band for the primary pressure during two phase blowdown is larger than that of the remaining period. Similarly, a larger uncertainty band is observed relating to accumulator injection flow during reflood phase. Importance analysis was also carried out and standard rank regression coefficients were computed to quantify the effect of each individual input parameter on output parameters. It was observed that the break discharge coefficient is the most important uncertain parameter relating to the prediction of all the primary side parameters and that the steam generator (SG) relief pressure setting is the most important parameter in predicting the SG secondary pressure.
