  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the impact of uncertainty degree and uncertainty appraisal on cancer patients resilience. Methods: A sample of 181 patients with cancer was recruited from a hospital in Incheon. Data were collected from May 20 to August 25, 2011. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: The resilience for cancer patients showed a significant relationship with uncertainty degree and uncertainty appraisal. The significant factors influencing resilience were uncertainty degree and uncertainty appraisal, they explained 26.5% of the variance. Conclusion: Patients with cancer were adversely affected by uncertaint which led to a negative effect on resilience. The result suggests that intervention programs to reduce the level of uncertainty among patients could improve the resilience of cancer patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of uncertainty and anxiety in families of hospitalized children. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires which were constructed to include parent's perception of uncertainty and state anxiety. The subjects consisted of 126 families of hospitalized children in one university-affiliated hospital in Daegu. The data were analyzed by the SPSS program. The results were as follows; 1. The mean score of uncertainty was 64.70 (Range=31-95). The mean scores of subsets of the uncertainty were followed as: lack of clarity (2.59), unpredictability (2.46), lack of information (2.22) and ambiguity (2.14). 2. The mean score of state anxiety was 47.93 (Range=20-67). 3.The level of uncertainty was positively correlated to the level of state anxiety. 4. The level of anxiety was different depending on their religion and monthly income. The above findings indicated that the level of uncertainty and the state anxiety in families of hospitalized children were positively correlated. Therefore, nursing intervention for reducing uncertainty and anxiety and improving coping method should be provided for families of hospitalized children.

  • Purpose: This concept analysis was done to clarify 'uncertainty in epilepsy'. Methods: Walker and Avant's methodology guided the analysis. In addition, the concept was compared with uncertainty in other health problems. Results: 'Uncertainty in epilepsy' was defined as being in the condition as seen from the epilepsy experience where cues were difficult to understand because they changed, were in discord with past ones, or they had two or more contradictory values at the same time. Uncertainty in epilepsy is evolved from appraisal of the epilepsy experience. As a result, uncertainty leads epilepsy patients, their family or health care providers to impaired functioning and proactive/passive coping behavior. Conclusion: Epilepsy patients with uncertainty need to be supported by nursing strategies for proactive, rational coping behavior. This achievement has implications for interventions aimed at changing perception of epilepsy patients, their families or health care providers who must deal with uncertainty.

  • This paper describes the methods for calibration and evaluation of the relative expanded uncertainty of a multi-axis force/moment sensor. In order to use the sensor in the industry, it should be calibrated and its relative expanded uncertainty should be also evaluated. At present, the confidence of the sensor is shown with only interference error. However, it is not accurate, because the calibrated multi-axis force/moment sensor has an interference error as well as a reproducibility error of the sensor, etc. In this paper, the methods fur calibration and for evaluation of the relative expanded uncertainty of a multi-axis force/moment sensor are newly proposed. Also, a six-axis force/moment sensor is calibrated with the proposed calibration method and the relative expanded uncertainty is evaluated using the proposed uncertainty evaluation method and the calibration results. It is thought that the methods fur calibration and evaluation of the uncertainty can be usually used for calibration and evaluation of the uncertainty of the multi-axis force/moment sensor.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the nature and structure of "uncertainty of chronically ill patients" by explaining it more scientifically. This study is based on the unique experiences, which individual uncertainty experiences differ from others. In this sense, Q-methodology which includes self-psychology and abductive logics is applied to the study. The results indicate that there are six types of uncertainty of chronically ill patients : my own fault, self-esteem loss, self-care determination, cure-doubt, reality-restructure, and past-tenacity reality-absence. Thus, "uncertainty of chronically ill patients" is defined from the study as the process in which continuous transition and evaluation of possibility cause changes in human recognition, attitude, action, etc.. The significance of the study is threefold : (1) discovery of six types of uncertainty of chronically ill patients in Korean people, (2) the better understanding of "uncertainty of chronically ill patients", (3) possible developments of nursing concept and assessment and intervention technique based on the new dimension of the understanding in uncertainty for nursing of chronically ill patients from this research.

  • The uncertainty of measurement in nitrate from burley leaf tobacco by continuous-flow analysis method was evaluated following internationally accepted guidelines. The sources of uncertainty associated with the analysis of nitrate were weight of standard and sample, purity of standard, dilution of standard solution, calibration curve, water content, etc. The calculation of uncertainty based on the GUM(Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement) and EURACHEM/CITAC Guide. An expanded uncertainty was obtained by multiplying the combined standard uncertainty with a coverage factor (k) calculated from the effective degree of freedom. The concentration of nitrate from burley leaf tobacco was $2.09\%$ and the expanded uncertainty by multiplying by the coverage factor(k, 2.20) was $0.13\%\;at\;a\;95\%$ confidence level.

  • Report on the notion of uncertainty is important. The reason is that the measured value includes a lot of uncertain factors. Reliable results can't be derived without the notion of uncertainty. The mathematical model to evaluate uncertainty considering the quality of vibration is important to evaluate uncertainty, and it must contain the every quantity which contributes significantly to uncertainty in the measured results. In this paper, the evaluation of uncertainty analysis about rotor vibration measurements of machine tools is presented to evaluate the most important factors of uncertainty.

  • In measuring, uncertainty in measurement is essential to improve measuring reliability. Currently, however, in measuring impact sound insulation of floors, there are no guidelines to estimate uncertainty in measurement. In addition, the concept of uncertainty in rating is required to recognize the relation between measuring and rating. Therefore, through this paper, the efforts have been made to establish uncertainty in measurement and rating of light impact insulation of floors. The result of estimating of uncertainty in measurement and rating in our laboratory is considered reliable, considering ${\pm}0.46{\sim}1.44dB$ of uncertainty in measurement and 1 dB of uncertainty in rating.

  • While numerous studies have suggested the significance of uncertainty during the process of information-seeking, less research has investigated user uncertainty in the actual search process using a real system. This study investigated user perceptions of uncertainty in the process of the selection of information retrieval system in the real information-seeking process. Considering the role of commercial Web search engines as supplementary tools for traditional bibliographic databases in academic research environments, this study analyzed the selection behavior of scholarly researchers, who use such search tools for their academic study. The researchers were limited to the discipline of science in order to understand user perceptions in this field. The findings revealed various dimensions, types, and incidents of uncertainty. Variations appeared in different incidents of uncertainty relating to the unique characteristics of the subjects' information-seeking context. The identification of three principal origins of uncertainty based on the different types of uncertainty generated implications to improve information systems and services.

  • Using the indicators of economic policy uncertainty developed by Baker et al. (2016), this paper investigates the effects of the US economic policy uncertainty on the Korea economic uncertainty as well as Korea-US foreign exchange risk. The key findings are that: (i) the degree of spillovers of policy uncertainty from the US to Korea is considerable but not comparatively high; (ii) the US policy uncertainty plays a stronger and more consistent role in Korean currency risk than Korea policy uncertainty and other macro variables. It implies that the economic policy uncertainty in the US is an important contributor to Korea-US exchange rates.
