In this paper, a small internal antenna for a mobile handset is presented using multiband, wideband, and high-isolation multiple-input multiple-output techniques. The proposed antenna consists of three planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) that operate in the global system for mobile communication (GSM900), the digital communication system (DCS), the personal communication system (PCS), the universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS), and wireless local area network (WLAN) bands with a physical size of $40mm{\times}10mm{\times}10mm$. A resonator attached to the folded PIFA creates dual resonances, achieving a wide bandwidth of approximately 460 MHz, covering the DCS, PCS, and UMTS bands; a meander shorting line is used to improve impedance matching. Additionally, a modified neutralization link is embedded between diversity antennas to enhance isolation, which results in a 6-dB improvement in the isolation and less than 0.1 in the envelope correlation coefficient evaluated from the far-field radiation patterns. Simulation and measurements demonstrate very similar results for S-parameters and radiation patterns. Peak gains show 3.73 dBi, 3.77 dBi, 3.28 dBi, 2.15 dBi, and 5.86 dBi, and antenna efficiencies show 56.15%, 72.15%, 68.59%, 52.92%, and 82.93% for GSM900, DCS, PCS, UMTS, and WLAN bands, respectively.

The Third Generation (3G) cellular mobile communication systems aim at providing higher data rates, improved quality of service, support for multimedia applications and global roaming. Cdma2000 and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) have emerged as two leading 3G standards in USA and European countries, respectively. Both the standards are capable of delivering high bandwidth data, voice and multimedia services to users of mobile equipment, but are not directly interoperableand are not available across different geographic areas, due to which global roaming is not possible in true sense of using single mobile equipment. However, both UMTS and cdma2000 are based on wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) as the access method. Due to this, there exist some inherent commonalities between them. In this paper we will try to exploit the commonalities between the two standards in order to design an ASIC, which can provide dual standard capability. This paper discusses the physical layer aspects of the two standards and proposes an approach to design an ASIC which can be mapped to baseband processing part of the physical layer and is capable of delivering for either of the two aforementioned standards.
One of the first decisions that a radio network designer must take is the location of base stations and the distance between them in order to give the best coverage to a region and, possibly, to reduce deployment costs. In this paper, the authors give an insight to this matter by presenting a possible solution to a real problem: Planning the base stations layout for a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) in the city of Barcelona. At the basis of this problem, there is the interdependence between coverage and capacity in a wideband-code division multiple access (W-CDMA) system, which is a new element in the planning of BS layout for mobile communications. This aspect has been first treated with an analytical study of the cell coverage range for a specific environment and service. The achieved results have been checked with the help of snapshot simulations together with a geographical information system (GIS) tool incorporated in the simulator that allows to perform analysis and to visualize results in a useful way. By using the simulator, it is also possible to study a more complex environment, that of a set of base stations providing multiple services to a large number of users.

The B3G networks that provide the internetworking techniques of heterogeneous network systems and services are constructed to support various service requirements of mobile users. In this paper, we represent the internetworking scheme of heterogeneous networks systems such like UMTS and WLAN which can be used as access networks, and illustrate the service providing of each network system and the internetworking service based on heterogeneous access networks. UMTS and WLAN can provide each proper service to mobile users, and is included to B3G networks to increase the service usage effectiveness by using complementary service for mobile users.

An AAL2 transmission scheme is used to deliver voice and data traffic between Node-B and RNC on 3G WCDMA network. To predict performance of AAL2 multiplexing precisely, we derived analytically bandwidth gain and cell packing density using discrete-time Markov chain model for voice service and validated these results with simulation. We also performed detailed simulation for AAL2 multiplexing in a concentrator. Based on the analytical result, we propose the engineering guideline to select the optimal Timer_CU in a Node-B. We found that there is no major benefit of additional AAL2 multiplexing in a concentrator and the benefit of AAL2 switching in tub for data services is much less than that for voice service.

The future mobile networks consist of hyper-dense heterogeneous and small cell networks of same or different radio access technologies (RAT). Integrating mobile networks of different RATs to provide seamless and smooth mobility service will be the target of future mobile converged network. Generally, handover from high-speed networks to low-speed networks faces many challenges from application perspective, such as abrupt bandwidth variation, packet loss, round trip time variation, connection disruption, and transmission blackout. Existing inter-RAT handover solutions cannot solve all the problems at the same time. Based on the high-layer convergence sublayer design, a new receiver-aided soft inter-RAT handover is proposed. This soft handover scheme takes advantage of multihoming ability of multi-mode mobile station (MS) to smooth handover procedure. In addition, handover procedure is seamless and applicable to frequent handover scenarios. The simulation results conducted in UMTS-WiMAX converged network scenario show that: in case of TCP traffics for handover from WiMAX to UMTS, not only handover latency and packet loss are eliminated completely, but also abrupt bandwidth/wireless RTT variation is smoothed. These delightful features make this soft handover scheme be a reasonable candidate of mobility management for future mobile converged networks.

In this paper, the microstrip antenna for penta-band service is proposed. It is designed for a wide band characteristic based on a monopole line combined with a triangular patch structure which has two slits. Total antenna size is $35\;mm{\times}20\;mm$ and it was fabricated on FR-4 substrate($\varepsilon_r=4.4$) which has $35\;mm{\times}75\;mm{\times}1\;mm$ size and a microstrip line with impedance 50 ohm is used. Experimental result shows the impedance bandwidth($VSWR{\leq}3$) of the proposed antenna operated within GSM/DCS/USPCS/UMTS/Bluetooth frequency band. The resonance frequency of the proposed antenna is 0.92, 1.97, 2.45 GHz and the average gain is -2.18, -0.66, -0.58 dBi. Also, the radiation efficiency is 60, 85, 87%. The fabricated antenna is satisfied with the aimed impedance bandwidth ($VSWR{\leq}3$) in GSM/DCS/ USPCS/UMTS/Bluetooth frequency band.
Multi-output VC-TCXO (Voltage Controlled-Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator) for WCDMA has integrated the additional CMOS inverter, so it can be normal clipped sinewave output and additional CMOS output and it can be satisfied the VC-TCXO Characteristics that WCDMA system required. In this paper, however 26MHz is used for reference frequency, similarly and practically, it is usable from 10MHz to 40MHz, Most important factor to integrate CMOS inverter internally is the isolation between normal output and additional output. For this, it is separated in package design, due to this, when it isn't used additional output, it shows the same electrical performance, when it is used additional output, it has minimum-rized the interference. and then the important characteristics in reference oscillator are met to WCDMA system's requirements, like phase noise and frequency short term stability.
3GPP($3^{rd}$ Generation Partnership project)는 3세대 이동통신인 UMTS(Universal Mobile Telecommunication System)의 초기 표준화 이후 HSPA(High Speed Packet Access), MBMS(Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) 등의 기술 개발로 UMTS시스템을 지속적으로 발전시켜 왔다. 그리고, 최근 새로운 무선 접속 기술을 기반한 LTE(Long Term Evolution)시스템에 대한 표준화를 완료하고 ITU-T(International Telecommnunications Union-Radio)의 IMT-Advanced 요구사항을 만족하는 LTE-Advanced 시스템에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있다.
