  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of upper thoracic joint mobilization technique using Kaltenborn-Evjenth concept on the range of cervical and thoracic motion and pain in patients with chronic neck pain. The subjects were divided into a thoracic joint mobilization group(n=7) and a conservative physical therapy group(n=7). Each of the groups received thoracic joint mobilization or conservative physical therapy three times a week lasted for four weeks. The measurements were performed for the range of thoracic segmental motion(SpinalMouse), the pain(visual analogue scale) and the range of cervical joint motion(Inclinometer, Dualer IQ). They were made four times: before experiment, at 2weeks, 4weeks, and 4weeks after experiment.

  • Micromorphological features of Bhorizon of Honam series were investigated by means of thin sections of natural undisturbed, oriented soil samples. Thin sections show that the B horizons have argillic accumulations. Argillic horizon was developed at the utmost in B21t horizon. Channel, and skew plane cutans were identified in B21t horizon and stress cutans are presented in B24t horizon. Such a continuous oriented argillans related to channels and skew planes decreased with increasing depth.

  • 세균성 치태는 치은의 염증과 치주 조직 파괴를 동반하는 치주염의 주요한 인자로서 치주 조직 건강을 유지하기 위하여 적절한 치태 조절이 필요하다. 본 논문의 목적은 12주 동안 만성 초기 및 중등도 치주염 환자에서 치은염에 대한 임상 지수의 감소, interleukin-6 (IL-6) 농도와 치주질환 원인균인 Prevotella intermedia (P. intermedia), Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans)에 대한 소니케어 전동 칫솔의 효과를 일반 칫솔과 비교해 보고자 하는 데 있다. 총 82명의 환자를 선택하였으며, 30명은 일반 칫솔, 52명은 소니케어 전동 칫솔 군으로 분류하여 칫솔질 교육을 실시하였다. 전악을 전치부와 구치부로 나누어 초진, 1, 4, 12주에서의 치태, 치은 지수 및 탐침 시 출혈 여부를 조사하였으며, 가장 깊은 치주낭 탐침을 보이는 치아 3개를 선택하여 탐침 깊이와 부착 정도를 측정하였고, 선택된 치아에서 초진, 1, 12주에 채취된 샘플을 통해 치은열구액 내의 IL-6 농도와 P. intermedia, A. actinomycetemcomitans의 CT값을 추가적으로 조사하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1 소니케어 전동 칫솔과 일반 칫솔군 모두 치은 염증을 나타내는 임상 지수 (치태지수, 치은지수, 탐침 시 출혈)는 12주 기간 동안 유의한 감소 (p<0.05)를 보였으나, 전동 칫솔 군에서 통계학적으로 더욱 유의하게 (p<0.05) 나타났다. 2. 전치부를 제외한 구치부 치아에서 소니케어 전동 칫솔군은 12주 기간 동안 탐침 시 출혈의 감소가 통계학적으로 유의하게 (p<0.05) 나타났다. 3. 가장 깊은 치주낭 탐침 깊이를 보이는 3개의 선택된 치아에서 치주낭 탐침 깊이와 부착 정도는 두 군 모두 초진에 비해 유의한 감소 (p<0.05)를 보였다. 퍼센트 변화 비교에서 치주낭 탐침 깊이는 소니케어 전동 칫솔군이 $18.47{\pm}10.05%$, 일반 칫솔군이 $14.19{\pm}8.16%$로, 부착 정도는 소니케어 전동 칫솔군이 $24.26{\pm}12.51%$, 일반 칫솔군이 $15.65{\pm}9.92%$로 각각 나타났으나, 군 간 통계적 유의차는 보이지 않았다. 4. 치은열구액의 IL-6 농도는 두 군 모두 12주 기간 동안 통계적으로 유의한 감소 (p<0.05)를 나타내었다. 퍼센트 변화 비교에서 전동 칫솔군은 51%, 일반 칫솔군은 37%로 각각 나타났으나, 군 간 통계적 유의차는 보이지 않았다. 5. Prevotella intermedia, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans의 관찰에서 두 군 모두 유의한 차이는 없었다. 위 결과를 통해 본 연구에서는 소니케어 전동 칫솔의 사용이 일반 칫솔에 비하여 만성 초기 및 중등도 치주염 환자에서 치태의 제거, 치은 염증 및 임상 지수의 감소에 유의한 효과가 있으며 IL-6의 감소 경향에도 효과가 있음을 관찰하였다.

Protective effects of Jijang-kimchi extracts on diabetes mellitus and alcoholic liver injury in laboratory rats (랫드에서 김치가 당뇨병 및 알코올성 간 손상 예방에 미치는 효과)

  • The current study was carried out to investigate the effect of oral administration for 30 days of the Jijang kimchi extracts on prevention of diabetes, alcoholic liver injury and reduction of blood lipids in laboratory rats with alcoholic liver injury and diabetes induced by streptozotocin. In a diabetic model animals, the blood lipid profile, ALT, and AST levels were lower in kimchi extract groups compared to DC (diabetes control) group, and blood glucose level of DCJK (DC+oral administration with Jijang kimchi extracts) group was lower than that of DCCK (DC+oral administration with commercial kimchi extracts) group. Insulin levels were increased in order of NC (normal control), DCJK > DCCK > DC groups. In alcoholic liver injury model animals, ALT, AST and bilirubin were lowed in order of AC (alcohol group received 1 bottle of soju) > ACCK (1 bottle of soju plus oral administration with commercial kimchi extracts) ACJK (AC plus oral administration with Jijang kimchi extracts) > NC groups. In the clinical pathologic findings of liver tissue, AC group was severely injured, and tended to be improved in groups eating a 1 bottle of soju plus oral administration with kimchi extracts, especially Jijang kimchi extract group. The results suggest that eating Jijang kimchi can improve insulin secretion ability while lowering blood lipid profile, blood sugar and ALT, AST, and bilirubin levles in diabetic and alcoholic liver injury model animals.

Low Complexity Channel Preprocessor for Multiple Antenna Communication Systems (다중 안테나 통신 시스템을 위한 저복잡도 채널 전처리 프로세서)

  • In this paper, the channel preprocessor with an area-efficient architecture is proposed for the MIMO symbol detector which can support four transmit and receive antennas. The proposed channel preprocessor can shrink the channel dimension to reduce the hardware complexity of the MIMO symbol detector. Also, the proposed channel preprocessor is implemented with very low complexity by using QR decomposition (QRD) and log-number system (LNS). By applying QRD and LNS to the nulling matrix calculation block, the numbers of matrix-multiplications and matrix-divisions are decreased and thus the complexity of the proposed channel preprocessor is significantly reduced. The proposed channel preprocessor was designed in a hardware description language (HDL) and synthesized to gate-level circuits using 0.13um CMOS standard cell library. With the proposed channel preprocessor, the number of logic gates for channel preprocessor is reduced by 20.2% compared with the conventional architecture.

Cloning and Characterization of Monofunctional Catalase from Photosynthetic Bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum S1

  • In this study, an approx. 2.5-kb gene fragment including the catalase gene from Rhodospirillum rubrum S1 was cloned and characterized. The determination of the complete nucleotide sequence revealed that the cloned DNA fragment was organized into three open reading frames, designated as ORF1, catalase, and ORF3 in that order. The catalase gene consisted of 1,455 nucleotides and 484 amino acids, including the initiation and stop codons, and was located 326 bp upstream in the opposite direction of ORF1. The catalase was overproduced in Escherichia coli UM255, a catalase-deficient mutant, and then purified for the biochemical characterization of the enzyme. The purified catalase had an estimated molecular mass of 189 kDa, consisting of four identical subunits of 61 kDa. The enzyme exhibited activity over a broad pH range from pH 5.0 to pH 11.0 and temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$C. The catalase activity was inhibited by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, cyanide, azide, and hydroxylamine. The enzyme's $K_m$ value and $V_{max}$ of the catalase for $H_2O_2$ were 21.8 mM and 39,960 U/mg, respectively. Spectrophotometric analysis revealed that the ratio of $A_{406}$ to $A_{280}$ for the catalase was 0.97, indicating the presence of a ferric component. The absorption spectrum of catalase-4 exhibited a Soret band at 406 nm, which is typical of a heme-containing catalase. Treatment of the enzyme with dithionite did not alter the spectral shape and revealed no peroxidase activity. The combined results of the gene sequence and biochemical characterization proved that the catalase cloned from strain S1 in this study was a typical monofunctional catalase, which differed from the other types of catalases found in strain S1.

Case study of microseismic techniques for stability analysis of pillars in a limestone mine (석회석 광산 내 광주의 안정성 분석을 위한 미소진동 계측기술의 현장적용)

  • This study deals with the case that was the field application of the microseismic monitoring techniques for the stability monitoring in a domestic mine. The usefulness and limitations of the microseismic techniques were examined through analyzing the microseismic monitored data. The target limestone mine adopted a hybrid room-and-pillar mining method to improve the extraction ratio. The accelerometers were installed in each vertical pillar within the test bed which has the horizontal cross-section $50m{\times}50m$. The measured signals were divided into 4 types; blasting induced signal, drilling induced signal, damage induced signal, and electric noise. The stability analysis was performed based on the measured damage induced signals. After the blasting in the mining section close to the test bed, the damage of the pillar was increased and rockfall near the test bed could be estimated from monitored microseismic data. It was possible to assess the pillar stability from the changes of daily monitored data and the proposed safety criteria from the accumulated monitored data. However, there was a difficulty to determine the 3D microseismic source positions due to the 2D local sensor arrays. Also, it was needed to use real-time monitoring methods in domestic mines. By complementing the problems encountered in the mine application and comparing microseismic monitored data with mining operations, the microseismic monitoring technique can be used as a better safety method.

The Effects of Rainbow Power Therapy on Neck Pain Patients (Rainbow Power Therapy의 경항통에 대한 효과)

  • Objective : This study was designed to estimate the effects of Rainbow Power therapy on neck pain patients by using Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and pressure algometer. Methods : Rainbow Power therapy group consisted of 18 patients and acupuncture therapy group consisted of 7 patients. The degree of improvement of neck pain was evaluated by VAS and pain pressure threshold(at the points of Jianjing GB21 and Jianwaishu SI14) before treatment, before 3rd treatment and before 5th treatment. Rainbow Power therapy was performed at the points of Jianjing GB21, Zhongfu LU1, Yangxi LI5, Ganshu BL18, Weishu BL21 and Shenshu, BL23. Each points were stimulated with RP-UM103(Rainbow Power therapy instrument) for 20 seconds. The points of acupuncture therapy were Jeonggeun, Jeongjong, Sangbaekn and Hegu LI4 and acupuncture was maintained for 15 minutes. After above therapy dry cupping was performed at the points of Jianjing GB21, Jianwaishu SI14, Gaohuang BL43, Tianzong, SI11 and Bingfeng SI12 for 5 minutes. Results : There was no significant difference between the two groups in VAS, pain threshold of Jianjing GB21 and Jianwaishu SI14 following treatment. In the two groups VAS was significantly decreased. In Rainbow Power therapy group the pain threshold of the two points was significantly increased. But there was no significant increase in acupuncture therapy groups about the pain threshold of Jianwaishu SI14. Conclusions : The effectiveness of Rainbow Power therapy on neck pain was shown through VAS and pressure algometer. These imply that Rainbow Power therapy may be useful for neck pain. Further study is needed about Rainbow Power therapy.

Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitory Activity and Protective Effect against Cytotoxicity of Perilla Seed Methanol Extract (들깨 메탄올 추출물의 acetylcholinesterase 억제활성 및 세포독성 보호효과)

  • Acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity and protective effect against cytotoxicity of PC 12 cell induced by beta-amyloid protein and glutamate were examined in perilla seed methanol extract and its solvent fractions. Methanol extract of perilla seed showed dose-dependent acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity, with n-butanol fraction showing strongest activity. Perilla seed methanol extract also decreased glutamate- and ${\beta}-amyloid$ protein $(A{\beta})-induced$ cytotoxicities of PC 12 cells dose-dependently. Formation of TBARS induced by $FeSO_{4^-}H_2O_2$ in rat brain was significantly reduced by perilla seed methanol extract, with strongest protective activity formation of TBARS shown in n-butanol fraction. Results suggest perilla seed methanol extract may attenuate actylcholinesterase activity and cytotoxicity induced by glutamate and ${\beta}-amyloid$ protein through suppression of oxidative stress.

The Mineralogical Characteristics on the Polder Soils Development from Alluvio-marine Deposits near to Sapgyo-lake (삽교천유역의 하해혼성충적층에서 발달된 토양의 광물학적 특성)

  • The composition of primary minerals of sand fractions and secondary minerals of clay fractions were investigated on the polder soils developed from alluvio-marine deposits near to Sapgyo-lake, constructed a sea dike across river estuary located in the west coast. The effects of a topographical sequence on the physico-chemical properties and mineralogical characteristics were evaluated using XRD, DTA, and TG with the chemical composition of $H^+$ saturated clays. Soils located on the seashore side were more silt fraction, higher pH and exchangeable cations than the others. The dominant minerals of soil parent materials are in the order of quartz, feldspars, micas, chlorite and amphibole. According to the greater distance from the lake, the amount of 1:1 minerals increased, but 2:1 minerals decreased. The dominant clay minerals of polder soils are kaolinite, vermiculite and illite. Hydroxy interlayer minerals are abundant in the clay fractions derived from the soil parent materials which have relatively low soil pH.
