The physicochemical properties of damaged hair by irradiation of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) have been investigated by using transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope. The range of irradiation of hair irradiated for expectative 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours and 48 hours with stimulated ultraviolet ray. The treated hairs showed characteristic morphological damage pattern in the cornified cell of matrix and the cuticle following time past. The various sized vacuoles in the endocuticle of the cuticular cells was formed. The statistically significant differences in diameter of cuticular cell were observed in terms of tranverse swelling by formation of vacuoles. The hair cortex and matrix undergo long term exposure to UV-B radiation. The macrofibrils of cortex appeared to be affected most by UV-B, although the morphology and volume of melanin granule was not changed. The physicochemical destruction of hair matrix and cuticular cells is largely accelerated by long term irradiation of UV-B.
In this study, we received each wood plastic composites (WPC) from three manufacturers. These WPCs were evaluated regarding their physical and mechanical properties of both before and after accelerated weathering by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The total time of exposure of the WPCs to UV irradiation was 1800 h. The water absorption, volumetric swelling and shrinkage of WPCs did not affected by UV irradiation. Among the mechanical properties, there was no significant differences in bending strength and screw withdrawal resistance of UV treated WPCs compared with those of reference WPCs. However, surface hardness of WPCs showed decrease under UV irradiation. Stereoscopic microscopy observation revealed deterioration of the surface layer polymer in all weathered WPCs by UV. Exposure of the WPCs to UV irradiation caused decomposition and disappearance of the polymer layer. From this result, we can estimate that damage of polymer by UV led to a decrease in the surface hardness of the WPCs. The wood flours retained original shape after accelerated weathering by UV irradiation.

The supply of microbiological risk-free water is essential to keep food safety and public hygiene. And removal, inactivation, and destruction of microorganisms in drinking water are key for ensuring safety in the food industry. Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation is an attractive method for efficient disinfection of water without generating toxicity and adversely affecting human health. In this study, the disinfection efficiencies of UV-C irradiation on Shigella flexneri (Gram negative) and Listeria monocytogenes (Gram positive) at various concentrations in drinking water were evaluated using a water purifier. Their morphological and physiological characteristics after UV-C irradiation were observed using fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry combined with live/dead staining. UV-C irradiation (254 nm wavelength, irradiation dose: 40 mJ/cm2) at a water flow velocity of 3.4 L/min showed disinfection ability on both bacteria up to 108 CFU/4 L. And flow cytometric analysis showed different physiological shift between S. flexneri and L. monocytogenes after UV-C irradiation, but no significant shift of morphology in both bacteria. In addition, each bacterium revealed different characteristics with time-course observation after UV-C irradiation: L. monocytogenes dramatically changed its physiological feature and seemed to reach maximum damage at 4 h and then recovered, whereas S. flexneri seemed to gradually die over time. This study revealed that UV-C irradiation of water purifiers is effective in disinfecting microbial contaminants in drinking water and provides basic information on bacterial features/responses after UV-C irradiation.

$CeO_2$ nanorings were synthesized by using a surfactant free hydrothermal method. The surface morphology, structural and optical properties of the synthesized $CeO_2$ was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectroscopy measurements. SEM images showed that the surface morphology of the formed $CeO_2$ appeared as nanorings. The XRD pattern of $CeO_2$ nanorings showed the presence of the polycrystalline $CeO_2$ phase readily indexed to the cubic fluorite structure of the $CeO_2$. The mean crystallite size of the $CeO_2$ was calculated using the Scherrer equation from the XRD line broadening of the (111) planes of the cubic $CeO_2$. The UV-Visible spectroscopy spectrum of the $CeO_2$ nanorings exhibited a strong UV absorption band around 350 nm.
An asymmetric metal-semiconductor-metal Al0.24Ga0.76N ultraviolet (UV) sensor was fabricated, and the effects of local Joule heating were investigated. After dielectric breakdown, the current density under a reverse bias of 2.0 V was 1.1×10-9 A/cm2, significantly lower than 1.2×10-8 A/cm2 before dielectric breakdown; moreover, the Schottky behavior of the Ti/Al/Ni/Au electrode changed to ohmic behavior under forward bias. The UV-to-visible rejection ratio (UVRR) under a reverse bias of 7.0 V before dielectric breakdown was 87; however, this UVRR significantly increased to 578, in addition to providing highly reliable responsivity. Transmission electron microscopy revealed interdiffusion between adjacent layers, with nitrogen vacancies possibly formed owing to local Joule heating at the AlGaN/Ti/Al/Ni/Au interfaces. X-ray photoelectron microscopy results revealed decreases in the peak intensities of the O 1s binding energies associated with the Ga-O bond and OH-, which act as electron-trapping states on the AlGaN surface. The reduction in dark current owing to the proposed local heating method is expected to increase the sensing performance of UV optoelectronic integrated devices, such as active-pixel UV image sensors.
Zinc nitrate hexahydrate [$Zn(NO_3){\cdot}6H_2O$] and sodium hydroxide [NaOH] were used as source reagents in the preparation of ZnO nanoparticles in an aqueous solution containing deionized water and ethanol in a ratio of 2:5 (v/v). ZnO nanoparticles were heated in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an atmosphere of inert argon gas. The morphological and structural properties of the nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). UV-vis spectrophotometry was used to analyze the photocatalytic degradation of 3-nitrophenol with ZnO nanoparticles as photocatalyst under ultraviolet irradiation at 254 nm. Evaluation of the kinetic of the photo-catalytic degradation of 3-nitrophenol indicated that the degradation of 3-nitrophenol with ZnO nanoparticles obeyed the pseudo-first order reaction rate model.

This paper describes the influence of Ultra-violet irradiation on time to tracking resistance of epoxy insulating materials by use of the inclined plane test. And, the influence of surface degradation was evaluated through several method such as measurement of contact angle, surface roughness, using a scanning electron microscopy. As the 1000 hours of the surface degradation with UV-CON, the flashover time decreases at different rates depending on epoxy resin and silicone rubber specimen. As the duration of the surface degradation with UV-CON is prolonged, the contact angle of epoxy resin decreases at the rate of degradation time, while that of silicone rubber was not exchanged. It is assumed that this phenomenon is related to the decrease in hydrophobicity of the surface of the materials. Also, as to epoxy resin, the decrease of hydrophobicity due to surface degradation with UV-CON is greater than that resulting from surface degradation with WOM. The UV radiation produced chalking and crazing on the surface of the insulating materials specimen.
Nanosized palladium particles were synthesized using palladium(II) chloride, trisodium citrate dihydrate, and sodium borohydride under stirring condition. Nanosized palladium-graphene composites were prepared from palladium nanoparticles, and graphene was enclosed with polyallylamine under stirring condition for 1 h followed by ultrasonication for 3 h. Nanosized palladium-graphene composites were heated in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. UV-vis spectrophotometry was used to evaluate the nanosized palladium-graphene composites as a catalyst in the photocatalytic degradation of various organic dyes such as methylene blue, methyl orange, rhodamine B, and brilliant green under ultraviolet light at 254 nm.
CdSe-Mn nanocomposites were synthesized using a microwave method with sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), selenium (Se), cadmium sulfate octahydrate (3CdSO4·8H2O), ammonia solution (NH3·H2O), and manganese (II) sulfate monohydrate (MnSO4·H2O). We obtained CdSe-Mn-C60 nanocomposites by calcining CdSe-Mn nanocomposites and fullerene (C60) in an electric furnace at 700 ℃ for 2 h. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the crystal structures, lattice vibrations, and surface morphologies of the products, respectively. The photocatalytic activities of the CdSe-Mn-C60 nanocomposites were investigated based on the photocatalytic degradations of organic dyes such as BG, MB, MO, and RhB under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 254 nm. UV-visible spectrophotometry was used to confirm the degradation process.
The effects of ultraviolet light on bacteriophage f2 were investigated to determine the inactivation kinetics and its mechanism. The 260nm light showed a little higher inactivation rate than the one of 300 nm. In this work, our main concern was whether structural and/or conformational changes in the protein capsid could occur by UV irradiation. The inactivation for the first 20 minutes irradiation was rapid with a loss of about 4 logs and followed by a slower rate during the next 40 minutes with no survival noted in the samples irradiated for 90 minutes or longer. The structural change of the protein capsid was examined by optical spectroscopic techniques and electron microscopy. The absorption spectra of the UV irradiated phages showed no detectable differences in terms of the spectral shape and intensity from the control phage. However, the fluorescence emission spectroscopic data, i.e. 1) fluorescence quenching of tryptophan residues upon irradiation of 300 nm light, 2) enhancement of fluorescence emission of ANS (8-aniline-1-naphthalene sulfonate) bound to the intact phages compared to the one in the UV-treated phages, and 3) decrease of energy transfer efficiency from tryptophan to ANS in the UV-treated samples, presented remarkable differences between the intact and UV-treated phages. Such a structural alteration was also observed by electron microscopy The UV-treated phages appeared to be broken and empty capsids. Therefore, the inactivation of the bacteriophage f2 by UV irradiation is thought to be attributed to the structural change in the protein capsid as well as damage in the viral RNA by UV irradiation.
