바이오 응용을 위한 초음파 및 광학 기반 다중 모달 영상 기술 (Ultrasound-optical imaging-based multimodal imaging technology for biomedical applications)

  • 이 연구는 초음파 광학 영상 기반의 다중 모달 영상 기술에 대한 최신 연구 동향과 응용 가능성에 대해 조사하였다. 초음파 영상은 실시간 영상 기능을 가지고 있으며 인체에 상대적으로 안전한 특성으로 인해 의료 분야에서 다양한 질병의 진단에 사용되고 있다. 그러나 초음파 영상은 해상도가 낮은 한계가 있어 진단 정확도를 향상시키기 위해 다른 광학 영상과의 결합을 통한 다중 모달 영상 기술 개발 연구가 진행되고 있다. 특히 초음파 광학 영상 기반의 다중 모달 영상 기술은 각각의 영상 기법의 장점을 극대화하고 단점을 보완함으로써 질병 진단 정확도를 향상시킬 수 있는 수단으로 사용되고 있다. 이러한 기술은 초음파의 실시간 영상 기능과 광간섭 단층 영상 융합 기술, 초음파 광음향 다중 모달 영상 기술, 초음파 형광 다중 모달 영상 기술, 초음파 형광 시정수 다중 모달 영상 기술 및 초음파 분광 다중 모달 영상 기술 등 다양한 형태로 제안되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 초음파 광학 영상 기반의 다중 모달 영상 기술의 최신 연구 동향을 소개하고, 의학 및 바이오 분야에서의 응용 가능성을 조사하였다. 이를 통해 초음파와 광학 기술의 융합이 어떻게 진행되고 있는지에 대한 통찰력을 제공하고, 의료 분야에서의 진단 정확도 향상을 위한 새로운 접근 방식에 대한 기반을 마련하였다.

Estimation of Genetic Correlations and Selection Responses for Carcass Traits between Ultrasound and Real Carcass Measurements in Hanwoo Cows

  • This study was conducted to determine genetic correlations among carcass traits measured by ultrasound and real carcass measurements and to estimate indirect selection responses for real carcass traits based on ultrasound measurements in Hanwoo cows. To accomplish this, 22,080 ultrasound measurement records from 17,926 cows collected from 2001 to 2012 and 11,907 carcass records obtained from fattened cattle from 2008 to 2012 were used. Genetic parameters were estimated based on eye muscle area (EMA), backfat thickness (BF) and marbling score (MS) measured by ultrasound-scanning of live cows and using the official technique on chilled bovine half-carcasses after slaughtering. Heritability and genetic correlation for carcass traits were estimated using a mixed model equation that consisted of environmental effects as fixed parameters and additive genetic effects and residual effects as random parameters, assuming that traits were different between ultrasound and carcass measurements. This statistical method was applied to the average information restricted maximum likelihood method. The heritability of EMA, BF and MS measured by ultrasound were 0.33, 0.61 and 0.46, respectively, while the heritability estimates of the corresponding traits based on carcass measurements were 0.29, 0.40 and 0.38, respectively and the genetic correlation between ultrasound and carcass traits for EMA, BF and MS were 0.41, 0.78 and 0.67, respectively. The genetic correlation between ultrasound and carcass traits was highly positive. Additionally, the selection response for marbling score was estimated to be 0.42 per generation if the cows were selected based on the ultrasound scan marbling score with an assumed selection intensity of 0.8. Overall, these results indicate that the ultrasound scan technique would be applicable to judging cow selection for genetically improved meat quality.

열처리와 추출방법에 따른 몇 가지 약초의 항산화 활성 (Effects of Heat Treatment and Extraction Method on Antioxidant Activity of Several Medicinal Plants)

  • 추출방법에 따른 몇 가지 약초의 항산화 활성 변화를 연구하였다. 총 5가지 약초(우슬, 목통, 두충, 시호, 향부자)에 대해 비가열 초음파추출, 환류추출 및 열처리 초음파추출을 실시하였다. 총 폴리페놀 함량은 환류추출과 열처리 초음파 추출이 비가열 초음파추출보다 높았으며, 두충과 향부자를 제외한 세 시료가 열처리 초음파추출이 환류추출보다 높았다. 총 플라보노이드 함량은 향부자를 제외한 네 시료가 열처리 초음파추출과 환류추출이 비가열 초음파추출보다 더 많았으며, 우슬과 목통을 제외한 세 시료에서 환류추출이 열처리 초음파추출보다 더 많았다. ABTS 라디칼 소거능은 환류추출과 열처리 초음파추출이 비가열 초음파추출보다 작았으며, DPPH 라디칼 소거능은 우슬과 목통을 제외한 세 시료는 환류추출에서 더 높은 활성을 나타내었다. 환원력은 우슬이 가열처리 시 많은 증가를 나타내었으며, 다른 네 시료는 추출방법에 따른 차이가 작았다. 본 실험 결과에 따르면, 약초의 종류에 따라 적합한 추출방법과 전처리를 적용함으로써 높은 항산화 활성을 가진 추출물을 얻는 것이 가능할 것이라 판단된다.

초음파 진단 기기에서의 시간 이득 보상과 다이나믹 범위 조절을 위한 자동 최적화 알고리즘 (Automatic optimization for time gain compensation and dynamic range control in ultrasound diagnostic systems)

  • For efficient and accurate diagnosis of ultrasound images, the time gain compensation (TGC) and dynamic range (DR) control of the ultrasound echo signal are important. TGC is for compensating the attenuation of the ultrasound echo signal along the depth, and DR is used to control the image contrast. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for finding the optimized values of TGC and DR automatically. For TGC, the degree of compensation is determined along the depth based on the effective attenuation estimation of ultrasound signal. For DR optimization, we introduce a novel cost function on the basis of the characteristics of ultrasound image, which provides the minimum value at the optimal DR. Experiments have been performed by applying the proposed algorithm to a real US imaging system. The results show that the algorithm automatically can determine the values of TGC and DR in realtime so that the subjective quality of the corresponding US image may be good enough for diagnosis.

개발도상국 모자보건 수준 향상을 위한 국제보건사업: 베트남 KOICA CTS 사례를 중심으로 (International Health Project for Improving the Level of Mother and Child Health in Developing Countries: Focusing on KOICA CTS Cases in Vietnam)

  • 우리는 전세계 최초로 무선 초음파 진단기를 개발하였다. 임산부의 원활한 출산을 위해 WHO에서는 4번의 사전 진찰을 받도록 하고 있으며, 이를 위해 초음파 진단기의 사용이 필수적이다. 하지만, 개발도상국의 소득수준과 의료시설은 이에 미치지 못하고 있다. 우리는 자체개발한 무선 초음파 진단기를 이용해 KOICA의 CTS 프로그램을 베트남에서 진행하였다. 우리는 베트남 흥화현 내 보건소 및 병원에 휴대용 무선 초음파 진단기인 Sonon300C를 보급하였고, 사업성과를 더욱 높이기 위한 노력으로 진단 교육과 실습을 병행하고 아웃리치(Outreach) 프로그램을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 해당 지역의 초음파 진단기 보급률은 100%를 달성하였고, 교육 수료인원 비율은 59%까지 끌어올리는 성과를 얻었다.

  • 인공지능 알고리즘을 이용한 유방암의 조기진단에 관련된 연구는 최근들어 활발하게 진행되고 있으나, 사용자의 목적에 맞는 처리속도 및 정확도 등에 다양한 한계점을 보인다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해, 본 논문에서는 ImageNet에서 학습된 ResNet 모델을 현미경 기반 암세포 이미지에서 활용이 가능한 다단계 전이 학습을 제안하고, 이를 다시 전이 학습하여 초음파 유방암 영상을 양성 및 악성으로 분류하는 실험을 진행하였다. 제안된 다단계 전이 학습 알고리즘은 초음파 유방암 영상을 분류하였을 때 96% 이상의 정확도를 보였으며, 향후 암 세포주 및 실시간 영상처리 등의 추가를 통해 보다 높은 활용도와 정확도를 보일 것으로 기대한다.

초음파실 표면의 세균 오염평가 (Bacterial Contamination of Surfaces in an Ultrasound Room)

  • The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the importance of hospital hygiene and infection control in hospital settings. To raise hygiene awareness among ultrasound technicians, we evaluated the hygiene status of an ultrasound room, in comparison with that of objects used in daily life. Using the swab method, the following surfaces were examined: eight surfaces in the ultrasound room including the ultrasound probes (convex, linear, sector, 3D), ultrasound track ball, ultrasound keyboard, ultrasound gel (sealed and in use) and pillow as well as four surfaces of everyday objects including subway handles, common computer keyboards, common computer mouse, and cell phones. The streak plate technique was used for inoculation into media, which was observed for the formation of bacterial colonies following incubation for 24 h. Six bacterial strains were detected from objects used in the ultrasound room, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Four strains of bacteria were detected on surfaces of everyday objects. The equipment and accessories used in an ultrasound room can act as vehicles for infecting patients. Establishment of standardized hygiene protocols and periodic training of the staff are recommended to avoid cross-infection.

초음파 서모그래피를 적용한 피스톤 스커트 절단균열에 대한 비파괴 신뢰성 평가 (The Nondestructive Reliability Evaluation which it Applies Ultrasound Thermography about Cutting Crack of Piston Skirt)

  • Ultrasound thermography detects defects by radiating 20 ~ 30 kHz ultrasound waves to the samples and capturing the heat generated from the defects with the use of an infrared thermographic camera. This technology is being spotlighted as a next-generation NDE for the automobile and aerospace industries because it can test large areas and can detect defects such as cracks and exfoliations in real time. The heating mechanism of the ultrasound vibration has not been accurately determined, but the thermomechanical coupling effect and the surface or internal friction are estimated to be the main causes. When this heat is captured by an infrared thermographic camera, the defects inside or on the surface of objects can be quickly detected. Although this technology can construct a testing device relatively simply and can detect defects within a short time, there are no reliable data about the factors related to its detection ability. In this study, the ultrasound thermography technique was used to manufacture gasoline and diesel engine piston specimens, and nondestructive reliability tests to verify the applicability and validity of the ultrasound thermography technique.

초음파 탐촉자의 위생관리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Hygiene Management of Ultrasound Probe)

  • This study examined the hygiene management of ultrasound probes by examining the cleaning tools for hygiene management of ultrasound probes, the presence or absence of wearing glove as a personal protective equipment, and the awareness of ultrasound probe hygiene. Parts 154 questionnaire about people working in the ultrasound room were surveyed and analyzed. The single gel removal tool of the ultrasound probe was most frequently used with a 48.7% cotton towel, and for double gel removal tools, the first gel removal tool was 42.4% cotton towel and the second gel removal tool was used with 57.6% wet tissue. Antimicrobial wipes were the most commonly used drug and instrument used in ultrasound hygiene management at 58.4%. According to the survey of the presence or absence of wearing glove during ultrasound examination, 46.8% were found to be unworn. When examining the intracavity ultrasound, 30.9% of those who do not wear glove and 61.0% of hygiene awareness of ultrasound probes are 'normal'. According to age, ultrasound probe gel removal tool was not significant difference(p>0.05). According to the working organization and the working department, it was significant difference to wearing gloves during ultrasound examination(p<0.05). Therefore, in order to properly sanitize the ultrasound probe, it is considered that a guideline for hygiene management of the ultrasound probe that fits the situation in Korea is necessary, and it is considered that thorough hygiene management training for inspector is necessary for efficient hygiene management of the ultrasound probe.

Development of a Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Tooth-whitening Apparatus

  • The aim of this study was to develop an ultrasonic tooth-whitening apparatus using piezoelectric transducers, which enhance bleaching efficiency by applying ultrasound, while performing a teeth whitening procedure. For this purpose, an ultrasonic transducer was designed and manufactured, and the effects of reduction in the whitening material's concentration and in the whitening treatment time through using the ultrasound cavitation phenomenon were confirmed. Also, the validity of this study was investigated by comparing the whitening performance with a commercialized optical whitener, through color comparison. The results revealed that the ultrasound whitener produced color values that were enhanced by as much as double that of the conventional LED light whitening method. Even when the operational time was reduced by half, the ultrasound method showed superior performance by over 54% compared to the conventional light whitener, revealing that the ultrasound method showed a remarkable treatment reduction effect.
