The presence of hydrogen in industrial plants is a source of damage. Hydrogen attack is one such form of degradation and often causing large tube ruptures that necessitate an immediate shutdown. Hydrogen attack may reduce the fracture toughness as well as the strength of steels. This reduction is caused partially by the presence of cavities and microcracks at the grain boundaries. In the past several techniques have been used with limited results. This paper describes the application of an ultrasonic velocity and attenuation in hydrogen damage. Ultrasonic tests showed a decrease in wave velocity and an increase in attenuation. Such results demonstrate the potential for ultrasonic nondestructive testing to quantify damage. Based on this study, reliable recommendation is suggested to detect hydrogen attack.

In order to assure the reliability and integrity of structures such as bridges, Power and petrochemical plants, nondestructive evaluation techniques are recently playing more important roles. Among the various kinds of nondestructive evaluation techniques, ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used methods for nondestructive inspection of internal defects in structures. For the reliable quantitative evaluation of internal defects from the experimental ultrasonic signals, a numerical analysis of ultrasonic scattering field due to a defect distribution is absolutely required. In this paper, the SH-wave scattering by multi-cavity defects using elastodynamic boundary element method is studied. The effects of shape of defects on transmitted and reflected fields are considered. The interaction of multi-cavity defects in 50-wave scattering is also investigated. Numerical calculation by the boundary element method has been carried out to predict near field solution of scattered fields of ultrasonic SH-wave. The presented results would be useful to improve the sensitivity of flaw defection for inverse analysis and pursue quantitative nondestructive evaluation for inverse problem.
In this paper, we present an ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurement system. There are many ultrasonic measurement methods that are used in nondestructive testing applications. They include material property determination, microstructural characterization, and flaw detection. Ultrasonic parameters such as velocity and attenuation are most commonly used in them. Advanced signal analysis which is called "ime-frequency analysis"has been used widely in nondestructive evaluation applications. Wavelet transform is the most advanced technique for processing signals with time-varying spectra. Using the echo waveform gathered by the designed hardware system, we performed simulation of the signal processing algorithms. Then the algorithm is implemented on the system.

The role of quantitative nondestructive evaluation of defects is becoming more important to assure the reliability and the safety of structure, which can eventually be used for residual life evaluation of structure on the basis of fracture mechanics approach. Although ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used techniques for application of practical field test among the various nondestructive evaluation technique, there are still some problems to be solved in effective extraction and classification of ultrasonic signal from their noisy ultrasonic waveforms. Therefore, crack size determination through a neural network based on the back-propagation algorithm using back-scattered ultrasonic signals is established in this study. For this purpose, aluminum plate containing vertical or inclined surface breaking crack with different crack length was used to receive the back-scattered ultrasonic signals by pulse echo method. Some features extracted from these signals and sizes of cracks were used to train neural network and the neural network's output of the crack size are compared with the true answer.

This essay is a general review of the application of ultrasonic NDE techniques to the performance assessment and characterization of composite materials. A brief review of ultrasonic input-output characterization of a composite plate by shear waves is presented. A theoretical development of ultrasonic wave propagation in isotropic and anisotropic media excited, respectively, by a circular transducer and an oscillatory point source is summarized. Some experimental results are described in which ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements give insight into material degradation of fatigued composite laminates. Ultrasonic determination of the elastic constants of a composite plate and an experimental attempt at ultrasonic testing of an isotropic plate containing a crack are also included. A recent effort for the characterization of viscoelastic materials using the ultrasonic NDE technique is outlined. Finally, the reliability of ultrasonic NDE is briefly touched upon.

It is very important to evaluate the surface or subsurface microstructure because of their influences on mechanical properties of materials. Surface SH-wave which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface and subsurface layer is an attractive technique for material evaluation. The destructive method is widely used for the estimation of material degradation but it has a great difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. In this study, nondestructive evaluation for degraded structural materials used at high temperature though surface SH-wave method is discussed. 2.25Cr-1Mo steel specimens which were prepared by the isothermal aging heat treatment at $650^{\circ}$ were evaluated though ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation techniques investigating the change of sound velocity, attenuation coefficient and amplitude spectra. In addition, it has verified experimentally the frequency-dependence of attenuation coefficient though wavelet analysis method.

As the lifespan of concrete structures increases, their load carrying capacity decreases owing to cyclic loads and long-term effects such as creep and shrinkage. For these reasons, there is a necessity for stress state monitoring of concrete members. Particularly, it is necessary to evaluate the concrete structures for behavioral changes by using a technique that can overcome the measuring limitations of usual ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation methods. This paper proposes the use of a nonlinear ultrasonic method, namely, nonlinear resonant ultrasonic spectroscopy (NRUS) for the measurement of nonlinearity parameters for stress monitoring. An experiment compared the use of NRUS method and a linear ultrasonic method, namely, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) to study the effects of continuously increasing loads and cyclic loads on the nonlinearity parameter. Both NRUS and UPV methods found a similar direct relationship between load level and that parameter. The NRUS method showed a higher sensitivity to micro-structural changes of concrete than UPV method. Thus, the experiment confirms the possibility of using the nonlinear ultrasonic method for stress state monitoring of concrete members.
The microstructural evolution of ferritic 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb steel, subjected to creep-fatigue at $550^{\circ}C$, was evaluated nondestructively by measuring the ultrasonic velocity. The variation of the ultrasonic velocity with the fatigue life fraction exhibited three regions. In the first region ($N/N_f$<0.2), a significant increase in the velocity was observed, followed by a slight increase between the fatigue life fractions of $0.2N_f$ and $0.8N_f$, and then a decrease in the final region. The change of the ultrasonic velocity during creep-fatigue was interpreted in relation to the microstructural properties. This study proposes an ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation method of quantifying the level of damage and microstructural change during the creep-fatigue of ferritic 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb steel.
The nondestructive internal quality evaluation of agricultural products has been strongly required from the needs for individual inspection. In recent, ultrasonic wave has been considered as a solution for this problem. It transmit well through most materials and can handle safely and easily. However, specially in a watermelon, it is known that general frequency band (higher than 20kHz) ultrasonic waves do not transmitted well due to severe attenuation. The objectives of this study were to find out the proper waveform and frequency of the ultrasonic waves that transmit well inside the watermelon, and to analyze the transmitted waveform in order to make clear the structure of wave propagation in watermelon. The result of several experiments showed that 2kHz shear wave was the most suitable for the detection of internal cavity in the watermelon. Also, it was found that the surface wave did not influence the directly transmitted bulk wave. These results could be a basis of application of ultrasonic wave on the evaluation of internal quality of the watermelon.

This work is aimed to explore a possibility of using the generalized Lamb waves for nondestructive evaluation of the bonding quality of layered substrates. For this purpose, we prepared two sets of specimens with imperfect bonding at their interfaces; 1) TiN-coated specimens with various wear conditions, and 2) CVD diamond specimens with various cleaning conditions. A dispersion simulation performed for layered substrates with imperfect interfaces are carried out to get the characteristics of dispersion curves that can be used for bonding quality evaluation. Then the characteristics of dispersion curves of the fabricated specimens are experimentally determined by use of an ultrasonic backward radiation measurement technique. The results obtained in the present study show that the lowest velocity mode (Rayleigh-like) of the generalized Lamb waves are sensitively affected by the bonding quality. Therefore, the generalized Lamb waves can be applied for nondestructive evaluation of imperfect bonding quality in various layered substrates.
